  • In 1984 Tera Kota whose real name is Gboyega Femi released a Reggae Album titled 'Lamentation for Sodom' that turned out to be a catalyst that switched the Nigerian music scene from the predominant pop orientation to a reggae-dominated set-up that went on till the early 90s.
The album came at a time when the populace was yearning for better governance having recently switched from Civilian rule under President Shehu Shagari to a Military set-up under General Buhari. The introduction of tough economic regimes called 'Austerity Measures' and other authoritarian rules has not done much to assuage the pangs of hunger felt by the common man. Lamentation for Sodom became the voice of the masses and the Tera Kota hopped on the path towed by Fela Kuti, the frontline musical activist who has had a long-running battle with both civilian and military authorities in his quest to seek the betterment of the lives of the ordinary Nigerian citizen. Fela was soon to be incarcerated by the Military authorities, and this prompted the release of Tera Kota's second album titled 'Solitude and Shackles' which was dedicated in part to the imprisoned Fela. Tera Kota released a third album titled 'Peasant Child' in 1987 before calling it quits with the Nigerian music industry and relocating abroad for greener pastures.

Yeah, Tera Kota made it happen, but Sonny Okosun's 'Fire in Soweto' made a strong reggae presence.

Certainly 'Fire in Soweto' remains one of the most significant and relevant songs in Africa. Sonny Okosun was a Legend and in a class of his own.
