Video on study pathway for data science: • A Study Pathway for Da...
In this video I discuss how you can become a data analyst or data scientist without a college degree. It is more than possible to become a data professional with no degree - however, it will require learning the particular necessary skillsets as well as demonstrating some expertise with those skillsets, somehow.

Did 2 years in Computer Science without getting a degree. Meanwhile I experimented with web development, game development and stuff like that on my free time. Got into a big company in Customer Support and showed skills in automation with javascript, which led me to a position of Data Analyst in the same company. Then switched to a different company as Big Data Engineer.

If you plan on a consulting career, a portfolio is probably more important than a degree, particularly graduate degrees. On the other hand, corporate jobs likely will continue to require a degree to get your application through the applicant tracking systems loved by human resources. Increasingly, universities are moving away from the traditional pathway from undergraduate to graduate degree; some universities are adopting a "show us you can learn the basics" approach to admissions by eliminating the application process and replacing it with a 3-course sequence which if successfully completed with a certain minimum GPA provides direct entry into the full graduate degree program.
SQL is probably the single most essential knowledge and skill for any data professional. Building on a solid foundation with SQL learning Python, R, or even Microsoft Excel is the next logical step. As for statistics, in my opinion, learning the fundamentals as well as how to arrive at the more complicated statistical measures by first principles will help a data professional internalize statistics. Multi-table joins and subqueries are two of the most valuable skills in SQL and distinguishes those who have merely dabbled with SQL and those who have mastered the language.

I agree with all of these points. As we hear more about these organizations caring less about the specific degree (or having a degree in general) I think it's a very good thing both for the field and for society as a whole. Similarly, having a portfolio is ALWAYS a great idea!
Then I'm in mostly total agreement with the SQL point. I look at statistics as the backbone (unless we're talking very basic business analytics), but I think SQL takes significant priority over R and Python. It's hard to do fancy things in those languages before you've queried the data, often through the more complex methods you describe (multi-table joins and subqueries), in order to get a dataset into an appropriate format for the fun stuff!

Just discovered your channel! loving it!
I do have a Bachelor's degree but it's in the arts and if job boards are to tell me a thing or two, it's basically the same as not having one. lol.
Data Analysis/Data Science really interests me and I've been trying to piece out a "game plan" on how I should tackle learning it.
My biggest problem is that I have zero to minimal math background. As when I went to art school, they basically threw everything non-art-related out the window and I have not touched anything math since then.
Now I'm in this back and forth motion, learning some python here, stats there, a brush up on algebra fundamentals here. And I'm overwhelmed. What would you recommend to someone with a "math problem"? Should I focus on algebra-calculus-to linear algebra first to be "math ready" and just then start studying statistics, SQL and Python?

First of all: marry xmas and/or hanukkah! 🎄🎁 Second: thanks for all your great videos, keep rolling! 🤝🥂 About this topic: it depends also on culture. StackOverflow Developer Survey 2020 data shows that there is absolute no correlation between annual salaries and degrees... However, here in Germany, there is no way to get a data scientist job without a proper degree, at least not at a DAX company (the 30 biggest German companies). I think you even need a Master’s degree, BSc is not enough. Again, this has nothing to do with making money, according to the StackOverflow data. But for making a corporate career - here in Germany yes.

Hi this helped me a lot, I am from South Africa and I am the first in the family to not pursue a degree, i tried and well life circumstances hit and I couldn't continue and didn't even want to continue cause it really didnt work for me, I was passing without studying and craved to just go into the world and be useful, and felt disappointed in myself since other people put their effort to even be at university. I started side hustles and washed cars for a living and 1 regret hits my mind, I ignored the offers to study IT after school in 2013 thinking its a Nerd thing lol. Look at me repenting for that sin, just washing cars and barely making $5 a month if you convert it. I have been self studying Software Engineering for 9 months now and within that timeframe for the past 3 months I have been doing data science. This vid helped me alot thanks dude! I hope i get a job in Computer vision or something world changing

I've unrelated masters degrees in business. Both my degrees are nil science. Nil math. Hence I'm even less inclined to go to bloody university again and spend 50k on a software eng or D.S. degree.,
In my opinion, there a non-insignificant proportion of degrees that, instead of being 3 years to complete, ought to be 2 years to complete!
I think business degrees and media degrees and some art degrees have polluted the degree public perception.
I'm a good example. High performing student at uni, but couldn't do basic math (no need to just used my fin. calculator).
Now I can do plenty of math and am on my way to Calculus (in 6 months). And I realize how dumb going to uni was, for me (my bias).
Medicine degrees, pharmacy degrees, chemistry, even archeology and sociology (with math and stats) are degree worthy of uni imo.
Here in Australia, the uni system scavenges off international students. This has increased real estate prices and rents - to some of the highest in the world - in all capital cities. To my knowledge, there's no requirement for an Australian uni to build accommodation to house their tends of thousands of students. So the international students go to the private market and bump rents up to the buggery. This has been going on here in Oz for 20 years now.
They recently lowered the cash rate. So prices have gone up even more, + as non-widget producing bankrolling real estate investors buy existing stock and convert it to rental stock (I've a hypothesis here I'd l like to explore one day).
What may not have been predicted in the pandemic, is that the uni students (at least here and likely everywhere) are spending more time at home studying! Therefore, their electricity bills have gone up. It's costing the international student more now compared to when they were physically showing up at uni (8 hours of uni and uni air-conditioning/the cost has transfered to home) . Note the international student is primarily concerned about being a Permanent Australian Citizen, so that's their main motivation for sticking it out - not matter what.
The uni system has a lot to answer for here in Oz and I'm ashamed Australia has inter-generational housing unaffordability. But I digress.

I knew somebody with a physics background who was a phenomenal data and applied research scientist. Said that the background enabled him to critically think and problem solve really well. You'd be surprised the counter-intuitive degrees out there that serve lots of purpose in the context of the data world!

I've been to university and college like 15-20 years ago (Economics ). I don't have a degree though. The courses I liked the most are Statistics, Math, and Calculus. I'm learning Python and I like it. I don't like Html and CSS very much. I like Excel too.
I'm trying to become a programmer, and I think Data science would be a good option, but I'm also worried about not having a degree, even though I have University experience...

Excel is a very useful program! However, it has serious user-side effects. For instance, whenever I use excel I turn into a seagull, uncharacteristically swearing at every molecule of the computer screen. If I had a beak I would've pecked my screen to death by now, because of farking excel.

Hi Richard! I was curious if you would you be interested in making a video about a controversial statistics topic that has been going on right now that requires some expertise in the field of statistics ? it involves a particular large youtuber named DreamXD that has been shown to have cheated his speedruns in minecraft. it was shown through overwhelming evidence in a paper published by the moderator team of minecraft speedrun community that goes over the statistics.
you can find the original 29 page statistics paper in the video details of this video and an explanation of their findings: czcams.com/video/-MYw9LcLCb4/video.html
you can find the paper that dream commissioned from an unnamed astrophysicist who has an understanding of statistics who challenged the findings in the original paper (MST report) in the details of this video: czcams.com/video/1iqpSrNVjYQ/video.html
there has been a lot of evidence to show that the response paper had fundamental flaws in the paper that can be found on r/statistics on reddit. the issue currently is there isn't any good video evidence showing why the response paper is wrong (or right if that's your finding). A lot of people now feel uncertain about the findings of either paper because the argument currently is that there isn't qualified individuals in the field of statistics to make a formulated opinion or lack the understanding to know if the first paper was correct or if the second was. Another aspect that has been drawn into question to qualifications, people are dismissing the findings of both papers because a lack of people attributing their findings to their name.
If you make a video, please do post your video to r/speedrun on reddit and I can guarantee your video will see a very large amount of views. You could honestly make a whole series to dissect the many different statistical aspects which i have no doubt would increase the subscribers to your channel by a significant amount. A lot of people would like to understand the statistics behind this problem and we just don't have the expertise from someone like yourself to educate people on the topic. I think this could be a real fun way to teach people about statistics.
if you need any more information on the topic please don't hesitate to ask for information on r/speedrun on reddit if you need to more information about how the drop rate chance in the game operates
    Thank you for consideration !
