I wasn't even part of the 'emo' movement, or anything even close. I simply thought this band had some of the greatest instrumentation & theatrics I've ever heard. It blows my mind to this day that people could call any of MCR's music "shitty" or "uninspired".

When asked about being labeled emo, Way responded:
"Basically, it's never been accurate to describe us. Emo bands were being booked while we were touring with Christian metal bands because no one would book us on tours. I think emo is fucking garbage, it's bullshit. I think there's bands that unfortunately we get lumped in with that are considered emo and by default that starts to make us emo. All I can say is anyone actually listening to the records, put the records next to each other and listen to them and there's actually no similarities." But tell us how you really feel, Gerard? "I think emo's a pile of shit."

I'm pretty sure this song is the Patient talking to his mother after the events of Mama, where she said that the death of his brother was his fault and he tells her to leave and maybe attempts suicide because the idea of never waking up is too painful to him, he just wants to get it over with.

Whats incredibly haunting about this song is that towards the end you can faintly here Gerard screaming "Wake Up".
When I first heard it I had to stop for a bit and take a break, its insane.

My dad lived through the 60's, he was part of the stoner hippie movement and has seen so many classic rock bands in concert. He accompanied me and my bff at the time to an MCR concert during this era and it was the greatest night of my Life.
My dad said that it was one of the best shows he's ever seen. It was so theatrical, he's said. Gerard coming out on a stretcher was awesome. He loved it when he thought it was gonna suck

I fucking LOVE the instrumental in this one, the song is so great and so underrated
this song is so incredibly cathartic to me as an ICU nurse who worked through the pandemic and has some trauma from that. the beginning when he talks about his terrors, the lyrics "a drink for the horror that i'm in", just wanting to sleep, the end when he sees flames and people he loves dying, and that he can't ever wake up. his visceral screams at the end. that's how i felt the past 2 years. i'm glad i'm on the other side now but this song always brings back those emotions. i love it so much.

i have a thread in my twitter drafts that i never posted about why this is the saddest mcr song. i will now copy and paste it here.
whenever i listen to sleep by my chemical romance, like REALLY listen to it, i just start crying and i don’t even realize it. when you REALLY listen to it you realize how sad it is. it’s like he’s telling this story of all the awful things he’s done but he doesn’t feel bad about it and he realizes that he’s turned into this monster and he’s screaming at himself to wake up and change and stop doing all these horrible things. by “horrible things,” i mean maybe he’s murdered people. not gerard, obviously, just this character. the entire black parade album follows the story of this guy and the whole main is death. when he says “shut your eyes, kiss me goodbye and sleep” i think this character is killing someone. anyways, that song is truly like a knife in the heart and it genuinely hurts, especially since it’s after the song mama where he’s basically just going insane and he’s turning into this psychopath saying that “what’s the point in trying to be good because we all go to hell anyways” and it really just stabs you in the heart and comes through the other side. the fact that you can barely hear him screaming “wake up” at the end is what makes it the most heartbreaking song mcr has ever released. it shows that his helpless screams in his mind are being drowned out and buried underneath all these insane and horrible thoughts. he’s saying that people are crying for him thinking about what he’s become and he doesn’t understand how they could because he’s turned into this awful person and he says that he doesn’t feel bad about it and that he’s numb but deep down he is suffering and he wants to change. he’s in this torturous nightmare that he’s created for himself and he can’t find a way to wake up and he is absolutely terrified.

Thanks for the psychoanalysis of the album! I've never thought so deep into the lyrics, as I just tend to enjoy the melodies they make themselves, but I definetly see it now. :O
Not sure if you're still active, but I found your interpretation quite interesting.
The album itself is about "The Patient" who is diagnosed with cancer and expresses his thoughts and feelings until dies. Sleep is about his deteriorating state and how he is slowly accepting his fate and reflecting upon his life and the people around him. In House of Wolves he contemplates whether he's going to heaven or hell, and then in Mama he seems to conclude that he'll be going to hell based on his past actions.
The album is honestly a masterpiece and has allowed people to interpret it however they please. If you're interested, you should listen to "The Wall" by Pink Floyd, which I assume influenced MCR with this album. It's a story about the rise and fall of a rockstar who isolates himself from society.

Last night i had my first lucid dream, i was terrified through the whole thing and in an attempt to wake myself up i screamed 'wake up' like Gerard did in this song because it was the only thing i could think of
I read somewhere that the tape recording at the beginning of this song is Gerard describing the nightmares he had at The Paramour where the band stayed at for a bit while writing The Black Parade.

This song used to scare the crap out of me. The first time i heard it was on an iPod nano i found at a vintage shop, when i bought it, after it charged i saw it was already loaded with a ton of music i liked at the time from the previous owner, stuff like blink 182, taking back sunday, my chemical romance, etc. And one night i fell asleep with only 1 ear bud in while it was playing. I hadn't heard the black parade album in its entirety at the time yet. I was waken up in the middle of the night and Sleep was playing but since i had only 1 earbud in, i could only hear the beginning dialogue without the piano, and i thought someone was plotting out side of my door through walkie talkies, then the drums kicked in and i was so relieved

This is my favorite MCR song and I finally learned how to play it on guitar. I just love the haunting atmosphere from this song...
I remember being 11 and listening to this song wishing that I could "just sleep" for the eternity. My interpretation of this song was always that it was telling a story of someone that was giving up on their life and letting themselves just die. It resonated with me back then, as I was just developing depression - I too would have liked to shut my eyes and sleep and never wake up.
I never realised he was screaming "wake up" until recently, like he is trying to fight against the part that wants to die. Maybe I subconsciously heard it back then? Who knows. But now any time I feel like life isn't worth the struggle I play this song just to hear that scream, that desperate WAKE UP that tells me not to give up. I might feel awful sometimes, but I survived and keep on surviving. I guess they were right when they said "you only hear the music when your heart begins to break".
I designed a tattoo based on this song and I'm going to get it done on the only scar that's left from those dark times as a reminder to keep on going even when I wish to just sleep.
Album is about a guy named The Patient, reflecting on his life after his cancer diagnosis, and coming to terms with his impending death while having Death respond to his reflections. The album is an opera, Death responds or comments on the musings and story of the Patient, in Sleep Death is screaming "Wake Up" to the Patient as this is when he accepts death, throughout the album Death becomes sympathetic and wants the Patient to fight it.
