This song hits completely different when you come from a combat background.
The artillery shells landing in the intro, the air-raid siren at the end.
Even the "should've raised a girl(to this day, mandatory conscription usually avoids women as homeland-workforce), I should've been a better son (been worth more than just front-line fodder. Whether you make it out or not).
Every tiny part of this song, to me, is just concentrated combat PTSD, in musical notation and narrated.
Even the non-power parts' drums are literally just a marching rhythm.
    I miss my friends.

It’s so obvious this is about combat but like people are like “oh this is about trans people who aren’t accepted” which makes no sense since it never mentions wanting to be a girl it just says I should have been a girl so that he could avoid conscription and also he literally says “look what the war did to my legs and my tounge” like it’s confuses me how your comment was the only one bringing this up

@@Spartan_366 Songs can be about multiple things. The "Mother" character is credited as "Mother War", for example. It's about grief and regret and masculinity and nationalism. And yeah, a little bit about combat trauma, but mostly as surface-level metaphor. It's about accepting the things that we've done that are immoral or evil and that has "damned" us and accepting we may never find redemption.
      The song is a lot.

So I wrote a possible script for a music video for this song. Let me know what you think.
Before music starts: Artillery guns are seen in front of a trench, manned by soldiers. A commander yells out, “Ready! Fire!” Guns go off.
0:00: The camera switches to above an army camp. The soldiers manning the artillery are seen far off into the distance, and the area they are shelling is already pockmarked with craters. Explosions can be seen, also far, but not quite as far, into the distance. As the intro plays the camera slowly pans down to an infirmary tent in the foreground.
0:11: Cuts to the inside of the tent. A few wounded soldiers are lying in beds, and a nurse is walking, carrying a pen and papers. The camera follows the nurse to the main character, another wounded soldier.
The nurse sits down in a chair with the pen and papers.
0:17: Closeup of the soldier, then back to the nurse, who gives him a wry smile.
0:19: The soldier takes a deep breath and prepares to recite his letter
0:21: The soldier is seen saying something, then the camera cuts to the paper on which the nurse is writing. Instead of writing the lyrics verbatim, she should write, “Dear mother,” or whatever else the letter starts with, giving the implication of pretending he is alright. (I’m thinking that this should be a real WWI letter. If I can’t find a good one, I’ll write my own.)
0:25: On the second “Mama, we all go to hell,” the camera cuts to a part of the letter about something bad happening, such as “My friend died today,” or “The enemy has been constantly shelling us”.
0:29: Flash transition to another part of the letter that asks how the mother has been.
0:35: Part of the letter that mentions how awful he is feeling, how he sustained his injury, and/or how much he misses his mother. Two parts could be used as well, transitioned to in quick succession.
0:38: Cut to the soldier's face, with a horrified expression. Flash forward to him sitting in a trench with tired soldiers around him. (During this, the edges of the screen are slightly blurred, and the soldier is slightly visible for a second, then a cut to the nurse’s hand writing the letter, also visible in the background.) He looks forward. On the first “die,” cut to a pile of dead soldiers. A bit before the second “die,” cut back to his face. He looks down, sad and disgusted.
0:49: Another cut to the letter. The nurse writes something about how the soldier doesn’t want to talk too much about his experience or how horrible it has been .
0:53: The nurse writes another terrible thing about the war. (If a friend or fellow soldier dying hasn’t been used for 0:25, use that here,
0:55: On “die,” cut to the soldier’s face. A moment later, his eyes close.
0:56: On “blame,” another flashback to combat. There is no blurred background; this is real now. A commander stands on the edge of a trench and blows a whistle. The soldiers in the trench climb out and start charging. Shells explode around them and bullet fire comes toward them, both of which hit a few of them.
1:00: An incendiary bomb lands in a different trench, and fire engulfs the soldiers. Close up of one of them screaming in pain. Cut to the protagonist looking across at the trench, sick with the thought of how that could have been him.
1:05: View of various German military propaganda.
1:10: Jump to a military funeral. A soldier salutes with a trumpet player (not heard) in the background, then on “go,” jump to a line of soldiers ready to fire guns in salute. Closeup of the guns immediately after, firing in sync with the snare fill. On the second snare fill, cut to a machine gunner, also shooting along to the rhythm.
1:14: View of the protagonist’s mother standing in a door, a sad expression on her face. Cut to her son, who is about to leave for war. There are armed soldiers behind him, ready to take him away; he was drafted and does not want to go. He extends his arms for a hug, but she declines, and closes the door in his face. We see both of their faces: her turned away from the door and him lowering his arms and being escorted away, a sad look on his face. After “my love” cut to the mother, whose face is buried in her hands
1:20: More German military propaganda, then a view of a soldier on a stage, talking to an audience of young men and trying to get them to sign up for the army.
1:24: Match cut, with the German soldier in the center of the screen becoming a body in a trench, surrounded by other bodies and swarmed with flies. After “flies” is sung, cut to a pile of feces, also swarming with flies.
1:29: View of body bags being loaded onto a truck, then on “coffin,” cut to a coffin, then immediately cut to the rest of the funeral service.
1:35: View of the dead soldier who was speaking on the stage earlier, then a cut of the protagonist looking at the body, then looking down sadly.
1:38: View of a sergeant yelling at the men to get moving. The protagonist has a traumatised expression on his face, and tries to stand, but can’t, and collapses on “legs”. The sergeant yells at him and shakes him, but he can’t reply. (I am taking this line as metaphor here)
1:43: A ghostly shot of a little girl laughing.
1:45: Cut to the letter, with the nurse writing something about how the protagonist’s regrets the way he treated his mother.
1:48: Closeup shot of a grotesque leg infection, a doctor beginning to saw into the infected leg, and a cut
(heh) to the owner of the leg screaming in pain.
1:52: “You should’ve been” A ghostly version of the mother is seen yelling at the protagonist. “I should have been a better son:” Cut back to the protagonist. He shakes his head, a tear in his eye, and the camera cuts back to the letter, where he writes an apology.
1:56: Another flashback to combat. Soldiers are running with bayonets attached to their weapons. It is clear that the protagonist does not want to do this at all.
2:01: Cut to a soldier wielding a flamethrower. This doesn’t have to be on the battlefield, it could be somewhere else, such as Stalingrad.
2:05: A view of a sergeant barking orders, then a cut to soldiers looking up at him in awe.
2:08: Cut to newspapers with news of soldiers killed. A woman picks one up, then tears fill her eyes and she covers her mouth in horror, as she learns that her lover has just been killed.
2:13: Back to the bayonet charge. The soldiers make it to the enemy trench and jump into it. On “son,” the protagonist stabs his bayonet into a French soldier. We see the enemy soldier’s face, then the protagonist’s, both of them wearing expressions of grief and utter horror. Another French soldier fires and hits the protagonist in the side.
2:20 A flash and then a cut to the protagonist being escorted to a truck with a bandage on his side.
2:23: We see a psychiatric ward and the truck drives up to it. The protagonist is taken through a hallway. Along the way, he yells and struggles. This goes with “just mind your manners when you go”. He is taken to a room and the door is shut.
2:34: A flashback to the dead French soldier. He is lying in the dirt, and an open locket with a picture of a young child is next to him.
2:38: The protagonist bangs on the door and screams, then gives up and sinks to the ground.
    2:40: Flashback to the trench.
2:48: “It’s really quite pleasant” The protagonist is seen playing cards with a few other soldiers. “Except for the smell.” Cut to a corpse next to a pile of feces, swarming with maggots and flies.
2:52 Back to the protagonist in his room. He mouths the lyrics, then on “hell”, closeup of his bloodshot eyes open wide.
2:55 The protagonist starts to hallucinate. The ceiling turns into sky, and a shell streaks down with the counts. He slowly tries to get up, but the shell hits and explodes behind him, and he goes flying toward the center of the room. He gets up in the middle of a battlefield. Tanks and soldiers are all around him.
3:03: With every measure we see a different atrocity. Soldiers choking and being burned by mustard gas, killed with flamethrowers, run over by tanks, being dismembered by shells and grenades, and being shot to pieces with machine guns.
3:20: The protagonist screams and collapses to the ground, tears in his eyes.
3:27: His mother appears behind him. She sings the lyrics while approaching him and then lays a hand on his shoulder.
3:35: Closeup of his face. He shoves her hand away, then gets up.
3:38: He picks up his gun and shoves it into her face as he walks, backing her into a wall.
3:43: He looks toward the center of the room, and his mother disappears. An enormous choir of the skeletons of dead soldiers fill the battlefield. They are surrounded with the implements of war: tanks, artillery guns, and machine gun nests. Fire burns in the background.
3:50: The protagonist looks around in awe
    3:52: Back to the choir
3:59: One of the skeletons starts to walk forward. As he gets closer, we see that he is the dead French soldier, holding the locket that he dropped. Cut back and forth between the skeleton and the protagonist, showing the latter’s realization of who this is.
4:15: The protagonist screams and collapses to the floor. He’s in the hospital again, and the choir disappears.
Then it just shows the mom crying.

    Mama! Mama! Mama! Ma...
And if you would call me a sweetheart
I'd maybe then sing you a song
But there's shit that I've done with this fuck of a gun
You would cry out your eyes all along
    We're damned after all
Through fortune and fame we fall
And if you can stay, then I'll show you the way
To return from the ashes you call
    We all carry on
When our brothers in arms are gone
    So raise your glass high
    For tomorrow we die
And return from the ashes you call

This was my very first song I heard from them and with that, my ALL TIME FAVORITE. I was screaming the lyrics with all my power, and I can't be happier that they played it. I LOVE YOU, MCR!!!!

I'll never understand why this song never got a video. Seriously, this is one of the most underrated songs on this album. The brilliant lyrics, the sick as hell breakdown, and vocals from Liza Minelli? This would have probably been one of their best videos second only to Black Parade. Actually, I'd have loved to have got a videography of the whole album, it's just THAT epic.

Oh well now, Mama, we're all gonna die

Mama, we're meant for the flies
And right now they're building a coffin your size
Mama, we're all full of lies
Well mother what the war did to my legs and to my tongue
You should have raised a baby girl
    I should've been a better son
If you could coddle the infection
    They can amputate at once
    You should've been
I could have been a better son
And when we go don't blame us, yeah
We'll let the fires just bathe us, yeah
You made us oh so famous
    We'll never let you go
She said, you ain't no son of mine
    For what you've done they're
Gonna find a place for you
And just you mind your manners when you go
And when you go don't return to me my love
    That's right
Mama, we all go to hell
Mama, we all go to hell
It's really quite pleasant except for the smell
Mama, we all go to hell
    Mama, mama, mama, ohh

Animation Idea for this Song (based off of Wendigoon's explanation of the Black Parade):
(For Context, The Parader and the Soldier are the same, but the Parader is already dead and has skull makeup while the Soldier is still alive and has no makeup.)
As the beginning, you hear distant explosions, and the canmera looks at the blank face of our singer, the Parader/Soldier telling us his backstory of his WW1 experience. (The Parader/Soldier is NOT the Patient, is what I think) His eyes are lifeless, and you can see little flickers of light as explosions go off around his body. When the singing starts, it cuts to the Soldier writing a letter hastily, with a shaky hand. "Well Mama, we're all gonna die" he sings as he folds it into an envelope and it cuts to the Parader side, already dead and with skull makeup on. "And when we go, don't blame us" it shows the Soldier's face darkening into the Parader's makeup (or dying) "We'll let the fire just bathe us" It shows a silhouette of the Soldier and fire in front of him; it consumes him as he falls to his knees. "You made us oh so famous" shows the Parader holding an old WW1 newspaper with headline: "BRAVE SOLDIERS DIE IN--" (rest covered by his thumb) "Never let you go" the Parader is shown floating in an ethereal red ocean with an anchor on his foot (referencing that one line in a diff song when he says 'wanna see how far I can sink') "And when you go don't return to me my love" the envelope burning in someone's hand.
"Mama, we're all full of lies" this is the Parader singing bitterly "Mama we're meant for the flies" the Parader looks down at the soldier's body, flies shown on buzzing around the barely visible body. "And right now they're building a coffin *your size :)* Mama, we're all full of lies." The Parader sits up from a coffin and grins bitterly at the camera.
"WELL MOTHER WHAT THE WAR DID TO MY LEGS AND TO MY TONGUE--" Cuts to the Soldier in a cot in a medical tent, with a doctor at the foot of his bed, with something sharp... "YOU SHOULDA RAISED A BABY GIRL, I SHOULDA BEEN A BETTER SON" The Parader yelling at a window which you can vaguely see the mother behind, who can't hear him; he falls to his knees and screams 'shoulda been a better son' Cuts back to the soldier in the cot, holding his finger up with a sick smile, "If you coddle the infection," The Parader pops up with a bonesaw and a grin, "YOU CAN AMPUTATE AT _ONCE!_ :D " The tent and the soldier evaporates, leaving the Parader with the bonesaw; his smile turns into a grimace as he throws the bonesaw at the camera and screams, "YOU SHOULDA BEEN, I COULDA BEEN A BETTER SON!!"
"When we go don't blame us" (same thing as before, it's the chorus so the animation would be the same) "She said you ain't no son of mine" Shows the Soldier crying on his knees as the Mother slowly turns her back on him. "For what you've done they're, gonna find a place for you" The Soldier's face flickers from behind bars to in a hospital to a mental hospital. "Just mind your manners when you go" The mother scolds the Soldier and walks past him. The Soldier holds a burning envelope, which consumes him in flames as the song goes "And when you go, don't return to me my love."
"MAMA, WE ALL GO TO HELL" Cuts back to the Soldier at the camp, standing in a clearing. The Parader is close, watching anxiously as he remembers... The Parader turns to the camera grabs it "WE ALL GO TO HELL, IT'S REALLY QUITE PLEASANT" he smiles and pinches the black hole wear his nose used to be, "EXCEPT FOR THE SMELL"
The camera drops and faces up; you see flashing lights and glimpse the wing of a distant plane as Air Raid sirens start going off... "MAMA WE ALL GO TO HELL" We watch as the Soldier stares in horror, then starts running around as other soldiers bump into him; the whole place is chaos. As he runs, the Soldier starts crying and screaming for his "MAMA, MAMA, MAMA!!!" Explosins begin to go off and he gets thrown int a wall, where he slides to the ground and rocks back and forth, covering his ears and screaming, "MAMA, MAMA, MAMAAAAA!!!!!!" As it dies down, the screen goes white and cuts to a hand lying still, and then briefly to a lifeless face, the one in the very beginning.
It cuts to the mother reading an envelope inside her window, "And if you would call me your sweethear, I may just sing you a song..." The Soldier, now with a little bit of skull makeup, standing outside the window, cries out, "But all the shit that I've done, with this FUCK OF A GUN, YOU WOULD CRY YOUR EYES OUT ALL ALONG!" He looks down at his hands and then puts his face in them as he sings this. When he lifts his head, his face is fully transformed and his outfit is now the Parader's. He's back at the camp, standing over his body. Other Paraders rise up from their own bodies, and together they start singing... They dance together, somberly crying out, "We're damned after all, through fortune and fame we fall" They through up burning envelopes and newspapers, "And if you can stay then I'll show you the way" They all spin and extend their hands toward the camera, "To return from the ashes you call!" An explosion goes up behind them, spraying ash everywhere as they raise their arms in a morbid triumph. They lift up many flags together and begin marching forward, a parade float rising from the ground as they sing, "We all carry on, when our brothers in arms are gone" They salute as they ascend on the parade float to the corpses around them, "So raise your glass high, for tomorrow we die," They lift one arm, producing a wine glass with black liquid in it, then shatter it on the ground, "And return to the ashes we call..." They spin and bow, the Parader smiling bitterly at the camera.
It cuts to Mama behind her window again, reading a letter and crying over it. Lightning flashes, and we see the Parader looking in from the window grimly. He puts his hand to the window, watching his Mama, then sighs, adjusts his hat, and turns off into the stormy night to lead the Black Parade...
And that's my interpretation of this song! I lack the skills to animate any of this currently, but now I've written it out so maybe one day I'll do it. This is one of my favorite songs, not only because it's got awesome lyrics and music/vocals, but it also tells a brutal story very well; the whole Black Parade is an incredible storytelling masterpiece. Fuckin' beautiful.

Mama, we all go to hell.
Mama, we all go to hell.
I'm writing this letter and wishing you well,
Mama, we all go to hell.
    Oh, well, now,
    Mama, we're all gonna die.
    Mama, we're all gonna die.
Stop asking me questions, I'd hate to see you cry,
    Mama, we're all gonna die.
And when we go don't blame us, yeah.
We'll let the fire just bathe us, yeah.
You made us, oh, so famous.
    We'll never let you go.
And when you go don't return to me my love.
Mama, we're all full of lies.
Mama, we're meant for the flies.
And right now they're building a coffin your size,
Mama, we're all full of lies.
Well, Mother, what the war did to my legs and to my tongue,
You should've raised a baby girl,
    I should've been a better son.
If you could coddle the infection
    They can amputate at once.
    You should've been,
I could have been a better son.
And when we go don't blame us, yeah.
We'll let the fire just bathe us, yeah.
You made us, oh, so famous.
    We'll never let you go.

For what you've done. They're gonna find
    A place for you
And just you mind your manners when you go.
And when you go, don't return to me, my love."
    That's right.
Mama, we all go to hell.
Mama, we all go to hell.
    It's really quite pleasant
    Except for the smell,
Mama, we all go to hell.

1:47 "If can count on the infection, they can amputate it once."
I saw a comment analyzing this song and sayin it might be a metaphor for a soldier singing about his country.
I wonder if this lyric is a reference to gang green?
