In the book, there's a passage where Paul returns home for vacation and it talks about how he perceives everything that used to be normal to him. Like how he now fears to be smelling gas or flinched when a loud sound occurs. Or how the local generals lecture him about war, even though they know nothing of what is really going on in the fields.
The book has a lot of interesting writing styles and description of what the soldiers think and see, with a difference between their young academic spirits and their broken minds of war and cruelty

1:04 That leafless tree scene made me think when I saw the movie. I thought "that scene is too big just for some trees, it must have been just to set the mood". I started reading The Guns of August because of this movie (the book that portrays the first world war very well) and there is a chapter called "At home before the leaves fall" that reminded me of this scene. Briefly, the Germans were so confident they would win the war that they thought it would only last 4 months at most. When the Kaiser declared the troops departing the first week of August for Belgium, he told the soldiers "You will be home before the leaves fall from the trees" (we all know what happened next). I don't know if that was the intention of this scene but it made me reflect on it (I used google translator to write this text, I know English but I was too lazy, so...)

(Spoiler alert) the sad thing about this movie is, just before the war started the main character had a lot of friends and a perfect life. His friends went to sign up and also he did. But by the end all his previous friends had died and the friends he made on the way also died. The absolute thing that got me crying was at the end when he literally got stabbed 2 seconds before the armistice. This war was truly horrid and could’ve been prevented. This movie depicted it very well.

The saddest thing is that they fought for their country, just for most people to not care about their victory, they didn't even shred a tear, because they hadn't of witnessed their struggles, their losses, their mournings. Meanwhile their saviours had to mourn for years and years, maybe even decades, even if they got a slight glimpse of violence, their PTSD would've been triggered, into all those harsh moments and memories.
We wished they would've had been more respected, some families losing their son, their dads, their brothers, their cousins, their kids. They shall Rest In Peace for eternity.

its amazing how we can sit here and try to imagine a fraction of the torment war causes. Let alone a war like the first world war. It was insane, truly just the rawest purest form of insanity. Droves of people mowed down, literally called the "lost generation." All for the sake of power, all for the sake of name, pride, whatever. People tricked into singing their souls away. Thrust into the rawest forms of hell on earth. "Happy and young and gallant, they saw their first-born go, But not the strong limbs broken, and the beautiful men brought low, The piteous writhing bodies, they screamed 'don't leave me sir', for they were only your fathers, but I was your officer." - In Memoriam Pvt.
