Why GM And Ford Are Worried About RAM

  • American automakers take their trucks extremely
seriously. And the ongoing battles for dominance among the Detroit three are often called the "Truck wars". Third place challenger Ram has made waves in recent years, snagging major industry awards and stealing market share from rivals. Watch this video to find out how this upstart is now posing a more serious threat to rivals than ever before.
Ram has gone from a third-place also-ran in America's truck wars to a serious challenger.
The Ram Heavy Duty pickup snatched industry publication MotorTrend's 2020 Truck of the Year award on Tuesday, giving Fiat Chrysler's pickup brand yet another award to add to its growing trophy collection. The smaller full-size Ram 1500 pickup won the same award for 2019.
It is a dramatic rise for a brand that many in the industry thought Fiat Chrysler was mistaken in creating in the first place. After the Italian automaker Fiat merged with Chrysler in 2009, management decided to spin Ram out of Dodge, allowing the former to focus on trucks and Dodge to focus on performance cars and a few other models with solid customer bases.
The move seemed dubious at a time as cross-town rival General Motors ditched some of its own brands. But Ram has roughly tripled sales over the last decade and appears to be taking market share away from rivals.
It has done so by giving up on going toe-to-toe with Ford and GM on towing and capability numbers and instead offering buyers a solid all-around truck with a plush interior and a lot of highly visible technology in the cabin. The move might have seemed like a risk of its own: truck buyers have traditionally been considered practical customers who often purchase their vehicles for work or other specific uses.
But the bet seems to have paid off both in critical praise and growing market share. Now analysts say GM and Ford are taking notice and may be making similar tweaks to their own lineups.

Other friends who had bought domestic US brands had to replace them within 4-5 years due to mechanical reliability and wear & tear ISSUES. Yes that is the truth...I read once that 75% of pick ups sold are just daily drivers with owners not really needing a P/U truck for anything other than status. That is why trucks these days are loaded to the gills with creature comforts that guys and girls that need a truck for a truck couldn't care less about, and would rather be able to buy a truck without to save mucho $$$. Most of the people that buy trucks use them as cars so they want all the enemities, car like ride, muscle car performance, sports car handling, luxury interior, etc. thus the way too high prices. I remember when people that bought trucks wanted and needed a truck and all the brands were half the price of a car. And those trucks came with a steering wheel, shifter, heater, cloth or vinyl seats, rubber floor mat, and maybe a radio. Ahh the good ol' days!!!

If anything, I wish that the truck makers would take more of a "get back to the basics" type of approach with their lineups. I used to have a 2007 Silverado Classic that had an MSRP of about $17K almost 15 years ago. It was just a work truck trim level, without the fancy bells and whistles, but a comparably equipped new truck today costs double that. Pickups are meant to be utilitarian work vehicles. Why would you want to spend $50K and up on a vehicle that is going to get used for that? You would think at least 1 automaker would realize this and sell a basic pickup in the mid $20K range.

This truck was their Dad's daily driver for work and coaching Little League Baseball and Football. We drove that truck around back roads from age 12 onward. Cleared 10 acres of bottom land beside a creek for a lake. A road (Hill Climb) was cut in with a Bulldozer at the upper end of the bottom right on the creek at a 90 degree angle. Had to hit the hill in 2nd gear and keep it floored all the way up hill! It was about straight up and scary. It was a good 1600ft long climb and you bounced and spun but you didn't dare let off! This old Truck hauled all the log's up out of that bottom and a log house for the kid's was built in the woods behind their house. The youngest son used to take it in green cow pastures and haul @$$ and jump little bumps and bigger one's and catch some air! Fun Times! We jumped one we couldn't see with the front wheels turned left, landed all on the right front tire. Blew the tire and bent that steel wheel flat on one side.OOOPS!! RAM is using their resources well like Ford when they had their Premiere Automotive Group. If RAM offers a SUV it will be end-game for GM..The Sierra is nice but I was expecting more from that interior and the previous Gen too which taillights awfully look like the 04-08 F-150.. but that crap started with the GMT-900 platform. I really do miss the GMT-400-800 design language, yes it was more of a “in-house” approach but it was distinctive.. RAM has borrowed in the past but those Fisher Price like interiors where no mans land, but they’ve learned their lesson. RAM & Ford seem to be playing a game of “Whatever you can do I can do better” I’m a Ford a guy and become little nervous when RAM is mentioned, was not feeling the headlights on the 2015 & up model F-150s but it was original where the K2XX Sierra seemed to literally look for 04-14 F-150 inspiration. At that time it was good to see GM do something descent but it was completely done before a decade earlier.. we’ll just have to wait to see what GM does with the next gen Burb, Yukon & Lade interiors order to see the possible cues the current gen trucks will get when the interiors are revised 🤷‍♂️ but from the looks of the spy interiors of the next gen GM SUVs RAM & Ford shouldn’t be worried..

Gen3HemiBuilder 1964 yeah it’s sorta been embarrassing for a while though, it’s interesting when you look at the Mark LT when only produced from 05-08 in the US, it did a better job at distinguishing itself from its F-150 counterpart than the Denali has in its entire production run, the exterior of the current Sierra is sharp but the interior is just what let’s me down, RAM has literally stepped up their game forcing Ford to really put their money where their mouth is for this next generation of F-150, what I do like about this current Gen Sierra is that it does look less F-150ish and original though. I don’t even know where to begin on the Silverado. I Hope the RAM does your fleet good !

The expense in manufacturing really isn't from raw materials. That's a bit more negligible. It's in the design, engineering, and manufacturing. Overall it's much cheaper to produce a pickup than a car. The design is simpler, the manufacturing is simpler, and the scale negates all the engineering and machining costs. The price of a pickup is more about demand than anything else.

@Kevin Smith . . . I recall back in the 1980s that security outfits utilized mini-pickup trucks as their patrol vehicles because they were lower priced than the compact sedans of the same model years.
