This tent is incredible and also AWFUL at the same time!
Made by NatureHike, the Canyon Tent is unlike any tent that I have seen before.....it is the fastest pop-up tent that I have ever seen but it makes very little sense.

I have this tent. It is not intended for this kind of camping, as it is actually a cot covering. That was shown in the advertising when I bought it. It is not a bad design, it is for casual use. It is small and very rapid to put up, and just as import it is very rapid to take down. I carry it in a pannier bag biking and can easily whip it up to ride out a sudden rainstorm, then be on my way just as fast. It is great as a privacy shelter too. I don't think I'd be doing multi-day hikes with it, but it is great for these uses. It also fits handily in a day-pack. My Thermarest pad fits in it fine. At 6' I'm pretty comfortable. For larger, Decathalon makes a similar tent in their Quechua line.

decathlon 2p easy setup tent is nice, but even heavier... 5kg or 10 pounds is crazy!

I am thinking of getting this for bicycle touring as well. Winter only/mainly because I already have 3 season capable hammock/tarp system.
I'm just afraid it wont be usable in windy conditions as Luke said. Is that accurate?
I could add a lightweight 1,5x2m tarp that weighs 150g to block wind on the back of it. what say you?

I usually enjoy watching your reviews, but this time, the approach to the tent review was wrong from the beginning. This tent is designed to be pitched on a cot, which is why it has long guy lines at bottom staking points. If you use this tent for its intended purpose, it becomes clear that NatureHike's description of them being "guy lines" is not far from the truth. The tent's size is also designed to fit on a typical cot, so it cannot be considered a drawback. Of course, it's a bit disappointing that there's only one entrance, but I believe adding a dual-door system to a 1-person tent would be an inefficient design choice, leading to increased weight. The reason for adopting some solid fabric in the inner tent is likely due to its intended purpose as a 3-season tent. When you set up a tent on a cot, it's natural that there would be more air inflow compared to a tent pitched on the ground, so I see it as an attempt to mitigate such air inflow. This does not make the tent a "shame" or a poorly designed product. As I mentioned before, this tent serves a specific purpose, and it's most efficient when used for its own use. I cannot agree with the content of this review video that labels the inconveniences arising from using the tent in a way that is not suited to its intended purpose as disadvantages.
then test it and do your own review, that is a no brainer to me. It is still pretty narrow for a cot even if you do not sleep on your back all the time. It would still feel rather suffocating in that respect. Most cots suck but yeah I see what you mean.
I bought a 4 man tent at walmart for 39 bucks a few weeks ago and it has done nothing but rain, but I've been dry as a bone. I'm amazed.

I think you missed the big point of this tent. It's meant to sit on top of a cot, and ground mode is a possible option. Floor dimensions are something around a helinox cot, and you'll see the tent corners have pockets to catch the cot frame. Helinox has their own cot-tent system, jake lah tent, thous wind scorpio, etc
A friend bought one of these from Decathlon in Australia. Used it a few times, then the pull out mechanism failed in that it pulled the inner 'poles' out awkwardly and they broke similar to what happens to an umbrella. This happened to both ends at the same time whilst on a multi-day remote camping trip. The tent became useless. So whilst the mechanism is convenient to operate it is complex and evidently not robust enough.
Im not a professional backpacker but im ok with the cons. Im a small guy and want a small tent, i dont mind it being hot as i live in a relatively cool environment.
Id keep the door open and use a quilt

I'm thinking of doing so myself, as when cycling the weight isnt bad. And I can set up a little tarp to cook under, or to block wind.
In really stormy conditions i'd most likely get housing for the night.

You can buy this tent with or without the cot but it was designed to be sold with one which is the purpose of those guidelines like you said. Adding some extra guidelines and sealing the stitching with silicone was easy.
Now do an Honest review on what is blatently obvious COT TENT, guid lines at the bottom is a bloody big give away, and being a COT TENT the air flow would be much improved, so please do another review using the tent as intended, a COT TENT.
That came up in the comments on the first video as well, and at least when I bought it the marketing was clear about that. I'm happy with it. It is the only tent I know of that I can pitch and take down several times per day without really needing to think about it. Great for sudden rain showers.

I always felt that NatureHike catered to certain regions not in North America. Maybe when they get a secure toehold in Canada and the US, they may make tents specific to the continent. Some countries don't have the vast expanses for everyone to spread out or the weather isn't as extreme. I'd need some context for their design choices.
true that, the brand is very popular in South East Asia as for its affordable prices in this region, ie, if anyone here using anything from MSR, Big Agnes, they are considered very rich people as these brands have to be ordered directly from the US, whereas these China brands NH, Mobi Garden, Vidalido which are very popular here, are easily available in local market while some also ordered directly from China sellers. so yeah, it all depends on prices and availability, not sure about tougher conditions though, here we camp in jungles with heavy rain which some of you might call it thunderstorm. but we don't have snow and cold conditions. but i see Lonewolf using NH for most of his vids (after he got duped by Onetigris)
I believe this tent is designed to fit onto Naturehike’s camp bed (cot). That’s why the guy lines are on the bottom and why it is the width and length it is, to the bed.
The Canyon tent is meant to be mounted on top of a cot. Also the version I purchased does not have that fabric, it's all mesh. I actually wish it had the fabric, I usually camp in the mountains, and even in the summer it regularly drops into the 30s at night. Regardless, you're really nitpicky on this, and it makes plenty of sense because it's meant to be installed on top of a camping cot. That's why it's narrow. That's why the lines are on end of the fly. That's why it's short. It's made to fit on a cot. You reviewed their cot tent, not even realizing it was a cot tent, and the cons you list are pros when a cot is involved. First off, there's a TON more airflow with a cot tent, so you may actually appreciate those fabric panels. The condensation problem is also almost entirely negated by that extra airflow. Use the tent as it was designed and then review it again please. Naturehike even sells that cot that pairs with this...
All I can say is if one need to carries 15+kg and goes on a 36~72hrs trip with teammates with a tight schedule of physically demanding routes and activities, a 1.5kg 30sec-up-&-30sec-down tent sounds like a really good idea, heat and stuffy is just something I have to endure, it's either this or a cot plus a poncho.

you can get a hammock tarp system weighing less than 1.5kg
I retract my statement. A cot will get you off the ground under most conditions, and with just a trekking pole or two, a poncho tarp and some guylines you can make a very decent shelter for most conditions

@@joshchu Yeah Getting away from the ground is essential in some places. I don't know If I would tarp camp in such places though... even with a mosquito net.
I have little use for a cot as a backpacker and bicycle tourer, but they have their place. Can be nice to have in the car, to safely, quickly and silently (compared to an air matress and pump) get away from the ground.
@@pedroclaro7822 funny story, I once slept through the night in the jungle on a NH camping chair(with head/foodrest add-on) and a tarp as a blanket, just because I was so tired that day, and that's the time I found out maybe I don't necessarily need a tent for overnight activities.😅

When my kids were younger I got them a pop up tent kind of for fun and to get them on the path of being self sufficient. It was even quicker, it opened like an umbrella from the middle. However, it had similar issues, no vents, no air flow, way hot and crazy condensation problems. It became a Fall only, no rain tent...

at least this one's waterproof. but you always get wet with tents anyway (Getting it setup, getting in&out, cooking) so it'd be nice with a little 1x2M tarp. The tarp could give you enough room to cook under, change clothes, etc.

Such a well made video but he had not a single idea that it was meant to be used on a cot. Hopefully you can make an updated video with this tent used on a cot as it was intended.
It maybe good for kayak camping where weight is less of an issue. Once it's paired with the cot under, it gives more room inside and you can use it where ground is wet (close to water). looks more like a swag setup than a tent to me.
Thanks Luke. I have always wondered about the spot where the draw string goes through the side and what kind of system there is in place to keep that from leaking. It just looked like a weak point for water ti come in. But I guess it works.

Is it not designed as an off the ground tent to go over a camp bed ? The website has a pic of it like that.
that frabric in the inner would make it one of the few, or maybe the only tent, good for windy areas. In my area 30+ mph winds are a daily thing, and in most 3 seasons tents you will be cold at night. Maybe the tent is just not good for your area 3 seasons, but for areas like mine with mild non-snow winters but windy all year, it may be a good 4 seasons tent. Probably a bit hot for middle summer, but i do prefer to sleep with the door open at summer and not get cold in the other 3 seasons
I’ve returned to this tent after trying some other stuff, and I got say - pros and cons weighted, it’s great! Where I live, even in the summer, night temps rarely go above 13c, meaning it’s right on the comfort rating of this tent. Condensation isn’t much of an issue as long as it doesn’t rain and you can keep the fly open. Plus the fabric allows you to use sleeping gear rated for a lower temperature than you would with a mesh inner. Decathlon uses fabric in most inners for good reason. Here in the mountains it’s always breezy at best, so windchill is a severely impactful factor, and one that makes fabric more important than mesh. Size is fairly small, and width is terrible, but length is okay for use smaller folk as well as the Asians which are Naturehike’s main target audience.
Though I wish they would add some guylines on the top of the tent for some wind resistance, I can easily make my own with a constrictor knot around the pullouts that the tent uses for the setup.
So after all that, the quick and easy setup makes this infinitely valuable for quick and easy overnighters here and there, dayhikes, bikepacking/touring trips. Could use bigger/better vent holes, at least 10cm more in width and some some pullouts on the upper part of the tent, but yeah - for me it’s a solid 8/10, and good value for money.
Glad that I waited for the review. This could be my perfect pop-up tent, but even a short girl like me would find that too tight to be liveable. Hopefully, they will change their design and make it a really good tent.
The information on the nature hike site is confusing but isn’t this tent meant to be mounted on top of a cot? Would this change it’s use case?
You'd still need to do something about the condensation and the heat inside it in the summer.
@@kme maybe this would be in part mitigated by airflow going under the tent when mounted on a cot? I don’t know, haven’t tested this myself but i am baffled by the design of this shelter and trying to see what it is the designers went for.
@@nickvdhoogen I'm not qualified to answer that as I wouldn't use that type of tent myself. As a plus sized person who has issues with being off the ground on something like that - it's too flimsy for my liking, even if they might actually be quite sturdy. My irrational fear of heights is really that bad that it's a consideration for me. Plus I need a mesh panel, even if just one, to keep the creepy crawlies out. (also a phobia, unfortunately experience based for me.)

Love your reviews but Don't forget it is sold around the world and some countries dont have lovely warm summers so would suit alot of people who have cooler summers.

Its designed to use with cot or velbed, the airflow is good because it raise, if used on the ground the design would be off

I guess it's a climate thing as well, but i actually bought a special edition mongar 2 after i found i was always cold in my normal one because of the constant breeze because there was too much mesh. I mean it's nice in those two weeks of actually warm Dutch summer, but the rest of the year, give me some more fabric 😉

Luke has some good reviews, but you can't take his word as gospel because he gets a lot of stuff wrong and this video is a good example of that. This particular tent is a cot tent, not meant to be used on the ground, but that's how he's using it and poopooing it because it doesn't perform well when used improperly. He did a similar thing with the One Tigris Cometa, guying it out poorly and then faulting it because he couldn't pull the sag out after it got wet.
yeah unfortunately that's true. He fails to see the point/objective of some products and uses them 'incorrectly' so they end up working poorly. @@Im_With_Stupid
This is a good example, but there's plenty other examples like the Trangia kettle (meant for alcohol stoves but used with wood stoves)

Couldn't you tie guy lines to the spots where you deploy the tent?
So good for a shorter slender teen or slender woman who is 5'7" or under. Possibly better used in the Sierra's or Rockies where nights are chilly. Seems like an expensive tent for what it is.

I think maybe that design is intended in combination with a cot bed 🤔 long guy lines on back and front must have purpose why the lengths are long.
Correct. It is advertised as such. I have it, it is quite good for casual use, not multi-day ground camping.

Decathlon produces a similar tent in 2P and 3P sizes, they're really heavy but way better ventilated and made out of fresh & black material (blocks the sun heat and blacks out the inside)
My fave bigger tent is the Outwell Carolina M, I also like the Outwell Birdland. They are/were in the delux series. I dont think you review family tents as the are tough for one man set ups.
This one person tent looks pretty good for alpine and winter camping. I’m the summer, I like to set up a tarp and sleep in a Bivy sack. This looks like it might provide better ventilation than a Bivy sack when you leave the fly home. Can one tie guy lines to the frame when the fly is left home?

I'd bet a few dollars on the 2 person version being almost identical to the Decathlon version. You don't want to carry that around. But even with the cons of this tent -- if they were to make a second generation of this tent which would address the issues you mentioned here, it could be a game changer. This style of frame with a LiteFighter 1 style inner and outer tent? That would sell like absolute hot cakes, even it that would mean it costs 400 bucks.

This tent is predominately a cot tent , hence position of guy lines. Also being 18" off tge ground you will get much more airflow through the tent combating the low level fabric inner issue.
Try it on a cot and then let us know how it performs as a 3 season shelter.😊

A 23 inch width would be a deal breaker for me. I also don't mind some fabric at the head and foot area to stop splash. It's not needed where you have vestibules. But this tent doesn't look like you can pull out the head and foot area anyway.
I want to purchase a new good sturdy 3 season tent for my son . He’s 6’6 so needs leg room. He hikes a lot and camps often in mountains , desert , etc . Something light to pack . Anyone have suggestions?
Interesting, I just saw this Tent on a Camping Page and the Tent had a Tarp hanging over it.......
I mean...at 5/9 and being a side sleeper, I could make this work. What made me say no is the condensation, I'm willing to put up with a lot, but any tent I use MUST be good at handling condensation. Also is it just me or does this thing look a lot like the military ICS? It's funny, the ICS weighs the same 7 pounds as the 2 person of this tent but looks like the 1 person.
The shape of the tent is pretty similar to the ICS or the TCOP/LiteFighter 1. The hexagon shaped rain fly with a door on the long side is a very common design,the latter two tents have a door on either side though.
@@Stoney3K You know it's been a while....but I remember something cool about the ICS. If you put the fly on backwards, you can use the vestibule door to enter/exit the tent. While it may not be as easy, what that does is not only give you a bigger door for your vestibule, but during rain you can expose that huge mesh door for airflow and not worry about water since it's a vestibule. With like an inch gap from vestibule to ground, that's going to let fresh air in and help with condensation too.

so bummed about this tent. the super fast setup/takedown and what appears to be free-standing aspects made it an appealing shelter for my emergency kit. but with the other problems it sounds like pure suffering.

You can remove
the inner and use this tent as shelter. Maybe you can combine it with other inner like Catoma Burrow?
You should review Decathlon MH-100 it's very common in europe
FIX. Could it be fixed by company adding a solar blower fan (sock) to this tent? It might fix the air flow, condensation, and even size issues of this tent.
Some quality company should use this innovative setup system and make a one person tent for soldiers and hikers with all the recommended improvements .. that would be absolutely awesome ! I would easily pay $300 to $400 for it. Are you listening, NatureHike ?

I'm honestly surprised he hasn't gotten a consulting gig for this, considering companies have altered their product designs after getting hammered by him on his reviews and even reached out to him directly for his feedback. At 560K subscribers, he's probably one of the most visible influencers on CZcams for these things.

I have a canyon 2 person tent. Folding it up is quite a struggle and you can't do it neatly.

It’s a shame. I’ve been looking for a tent like this for a long time.. what a disappointment to thing this might be it only to find it has significant shortcomings. Hope they listen to your suggestions. If so I’ll be first in line to pick one up!
Thanks again for what you do. I never tented before finding your site, and I was 70 at the time I ran across your channel. I’ve learned so much about camping watching you. I dont understand why companies make bad tent's , Yes they can make money, But people will ask for their money back no doubt. But the tent or company may get a bad name . Sucks they didnt think things out.
It is a great looking tent. I agree with your review and especially with the cons you mentioned.

I line this tent ; I’d be worried about anything mechanical . How do you replace those poles and strings ? All rest of the comments I agree .
Maybe they meant it for mountain camping... what do I know?
