Man the New 3DS got robbed! It was more powerful, which did actually make a difference for some games. It had a built-in second stick, so no need to carry around the circle pad pro. Its own library was killer by the time it came out, with games approaching console-quality. AND, it was still backwards compatible with the DS, so you had THAT system's entire library too. And additionally, it did the 3D a little better (with the head-tracking), and its physical design was just really sleek!
    I would've put it at a solid A tier, maybe an S-tier.
Also, the GBA was put too highly I think. Its screen quality was forgotten in the assessment. Yeah, it was an improvement over the GB, but that didn't matter if you couldn't see the super dark screen! The GBA SP (which does deserve its S-tier) fixed this issue and took the GBA from a disappointment to a killer system.

...i took some liberty with the years and the match-ups, but overall they're pretty well aligned and gives a good idea to the reader. I graded them based on the match-up, and tried to use my best unbiased judgement. We need to PREFACE this with the fact that the processor alone does not make a handheld great, but it is one of the primary components of the experience.
Nintendo/Bandai/SNK showed consistently low scores which indicates they release under-powered handhelds. Whilst GPD/Sony/Sega consistently released high scores that indicates they release over-powered handhelds. The likes of the 1992 PC EngineGT had the highest S score for being almost on-parity for Graphical Fidelity with the Home Consoles of its period. Contrast that with the 2000 SNK NeoGeo Color which scored the lowest D- score for being grossly under-powered compared to its peers, those Home Consoles had seen big technological leap.

No mention of Wonderswan or Neo Geo Pocket? Though I was a late owner of both, they have something to offer in 2022. The Neo Geo Pocket has probably the best feeling analog stick out of anything 1980s to 2010s (the recent Hall Effect stick modules might be a strong contender).
As my personal favourite handhelds, I cannot rank them but I will group my "must always have" handhelds: GBA (an OG unmodded GBA and a IPS backlit GBA), DS Lite, 3DS (I have a new 3DS), PSP 3000 (CFW) and a Vita 1000 (I have an unmodded one and a CFW one), and a Switch Lite. That has some overlap for game capability, so its a bit overkill, but its my ideal set of handhelds to keep around to play anything portable.
With Nintendo likely never going to regularly sell any old retro game, and opt to only have their older games on the Online Pass, having older hardware is one way to play the old games (or emulate on a Steam Deck, Ayaneo, etc).

Tbh i dont really like the steam deck for what its worth is. I got nintendo switch instead because of it being absolutely small that it can fit in my pocket (albeit a bit too big but can fit) and i take it anywhere for me to play with my sister or friends. And another big reason for me is Joycons since the fact you can detach them and stuff and play 2 player is kewl. Altough they missed out on the oppurtunity to make it VR (they did but wasn't good). But tbh i would agree that steam deck in terms of games and emulation capabilites but to be fair i would prefer the switch for its feeling and stuff. Sure i could emulate but as one person said "Optimization is king" - Linus. But hey i wouldn't deny a steamdeck! I think steamdeck is a fair competition for nintendo and stuff.

You can hook the 2/3000 series up to a TV but you can't use a external controller. The whole DS/3DS line got done dirty. Unique hardware that made for some games that you just cant replicate via emulation, a decent digital library once you get to the DSI and beyond, even better if you mod the things. Very good form factor with the clamshell design that made them so durable but always fit in your pocket. The New 3DS/2DS lines feel like Nintendo's most premium and well engineered handhelds imo. The pricing was reasonable by the time they were out, and the system actually had killer apps by then. 3D was fixed and now worked with head tracking. The new hardware made games like Xenoblade run which is a technical marvel.
But most importantly some of the GOAT game libraries. The 3DS line has backwards compatability with all the DS games, and the DS lite gives you acess to all your gameboy Advance Games.
The vita was technically an amazing system, but that game library was ass, and it was dissapointing to see Sony give up. Nintendo saved the 3DS, cutting the price, pumping out games everyone wanted, and continuing to refine the hardware with each iteration.

How is the steam deck A when it can run on games and can be used as a laptop?
I bought a steam deck to play mmos. And it works perfectly at max graphics and its only getting better.
It would have cost me twice as much to get a laptop or pc in which both of those can’t be played on a plane or bus comfortably.
I can play my mmo, with a monitor or the screen itself.
I’m not even a huge steam deck guy who doubles the fps and emulates every possible thing, I just use it as a laptop with a controller integrated, mind blowing they put it in A I think
    Some side notes:
    It plays Xbox games
    PlayStation games
    Pc games
    Nintendo games with some hassle
Game boy and old school games etc.
it is a big game boy, a portable low powered ps and Xbox, a powerful switch and a pc.
