    Weird games, and no mention of Vib Ribbon for the PS1? That game let you take the game disc out while playing, put in your own audio cd, and it would programmatically generate levels based off the audio track that was playing.

      @liamjones2131 Před rokem

      So, wait... does it basically store all of the necessary files into the RAM, so that the disc can be replaced, and run from the operations from the RAM rather than from the disc? That sounds impressive. I know someone did the same thing with a Game Boy rom and used it to dump their game cartridges so they could emulate without getting in any legal bother.
      Such a really cool way of doing things, to not just utilise, but to do so creatively, the whole of the console.

    • @JeffDeLamater
      @JeffDeLamater Před rokem

      @@liamjones2131 yeah, that's exactly how it worked. game started up, and everything it need was loaded to ram, so that you could then open the drive, remove the disc, and replace it with your own music CD, and then the game would procedural create the levels based off the audio.
      And the cool thing is, the same song would always generate the same level. So if you found a song/level that you really enjoyed, you could play it across any gaming session.

    I hope people see this, and remember, when Nintendo was absolutely god tier.
    Back when they were adding sensors and things to cartridges, like Kirby tilt’n tumble.
    Sure they’re still doing amazing stuff to this day, but compared to how it was back then when they were working with crazy basic stuff and very outdated tech, they were absolutely magical.

  • @Axerob

    I got robopon (sun) in the box still. It was one of my favorite games as a kid and I got it bc emulators don't work for it. I had tried them and the saves would get corrupt, sprites would cause crashes like 10 years ago. I'd ask the emulator creators if they had a fix for it and the replies I would get was " it's a very weird game that doesn't work like any others; so the coding would take so much work for 1 game it wasn't worth it. They were sorry." So I went around retro stores for like a year before I found one. Then I got to scared to open it after I finally found one lol.

    6:20 I'd say one of the more notable info about Boktai is that it's supposed to be a crossover promotion between that and the Megaman Battle Network series. Problem was that the Boktai series wasn't received too well in the West (perhaps cos we're all vampires), that the final installment of the MMBN series got amputated and its post-game crossover scenario with Boktai didn't happen, unlike the JP counterpart.

  • @cameronbosch1213

    I can imagine a little kid using the Game Boy Camera, hitting the run option, getting the creepy "who are you running from" face, and then clearing it to find another face with the text "don't be so silly!", and then never playing the Game Boy Camera again. (And the error screens still had those faces and droning sound, like who okayed THAT!?)

    One of the coolest ones for its time is probably the SEGA channel cartridge, It was like a gamepass thru you cable company, had to plugin the cartridge and hook up a coaxial cable and it would have a rotating game library that changed every few months. Super ahead of its time seeing how things are now.

    Game companies absolutely should NOT require a license to make and sell games for a particular system. It was never like that before Nintendo came along. Anyone could make games for any system, provided they could figure out how it worked. Imagine if all computer software needed to be licensed, how many programs wouldn't exist today?
    You want weird?
    Xonox double-ended cartridges for the Atari 2600 - Two different games in one case. Plug it in one way and you got the first game, flip it around and plug in the other end and you got the second game.
    Starpath Supercharger - A large cartridge for the Atari 2600 which contained RAM and a cord to plug into a cassette player, then you loaded the games off tapes. A few of the games were even multi-load.
    Freezer cartridges - Cartridges for various computers that let you freeze and backup whatever was in memory. Many of the later ones had features to help you cheat in games, like searching for the lives counter, disabling collisions, quasi save states, etc. Magazines also printed cheats that could be entered using the cartridge, like a Game Genie.
    And if you want to talk games with weird gameplay;
    Moon Dust (C64) - Drops seeds of color on the screen and smear them around.
    Bounces (C64, Spectrum) - Two knights, attached to the walls with elastic cords battle it out by either hitting each other directly or by throwing a ball off the end of their swords. You can also use the ball to score points.
    Necromancer (C64, Atari 8-bit) - Use your wizard to grow trees, then use those trees to kill the evil spiders.

    The reason Sonic 3D Blast does that was actually an ingenious way to get it published. Any and all Error codes instead of dumping to the screen with an error code and crashing to the menu screen it would dump you onto the secret level select screen. It was done because if you had a crash you wouldn't pass publishing Quality control so they just did that instead.

    The sonic level select thing was a trick put in by the developer to get it past quality control. If in testing a game crashed the developer had to figure out the cause and fix it then resubmit. This developer started adding special debugs.. Upon detecting an error it would bring up a mini game or something and thus pass QC. Int he case of this sonic it sent ALL errors to a level select screen.

      @@JohnDoe-wq5eu I don’t wanna do an “um actually”, but Lunar Knights is the 4th in the series. It dropped in 05 in Japan and if it was translated it would’ve been 06-07, which was 3yrs into the DS and most people wouldn’t have bought it.

      Well, I did say technically as in I'm not counting anything that never made it to the states or outside of Japan. I actually wasn't aware that was the fourth game but it was the third game as far as officially released outside of Japan so I'm going to go ahead and count it that way.

      the second game also had cross connection stuff, a bunch of armors and a weapon, it also had an asynchronous multiplayer battle versus shademan.exe, megaman fought in his grid style and django fought in his and you worked together, or against each other, it scored both actions however you chose to do it, to bring his health down
