      alexi shanto this isn’t the same jimmy page as the one who wrote stairway to heaven. This is a dude completely baked out of his mind, who also happens to be an absolute beast on the guitar when sober. Of course he can play it, quite easily might I add, but his brain needs to be switched on first.

    say what you want but I honestly believe this was one of his more emotional solos, you can hear it in his guitar playing, the way the solo sounds and has the echo behind it. especially this concert being one of the first times he played again since bonzos death, the separation of his band, heroin and depression I just feel it all unfolds with what and how he plays here.

Closing night we sat 9th row right in front of Jimmy and he was terrible! Strung out on heroin, partied for over a week in Hollywood and he drank heavily so hearing him play sober in 83 was fantastic! I knew there were no vocals, barely heard when the others joined in. We all sang the last line totally entranced by his performance. Zeppelin songs are so complex that they are hard to reproduce live.

      Ayham Shaheed It was 7 years but may as well been a decade. I listened to Zeppelin bootlegs in the 70s, bought their albums from Physical Graffiti on when released and saw them three times in 77 at the Forum. Closing night we sat 9th row right in front of Jimmy and he was terrible! We ditched school half a dozen times to see TSRTS when it was released and we're so ready to see them live! Opening night was good, the third night was ok but closing night sucked! My brother had his camera with a telescopic lens and Jimmy's wrists and fingers were like bones. He's skinny anyway but I heard he didn't eat food, just drank alcohol while he was slamming. It was so disappointing, tragic after the movie was so great and the albums are legendary. I'm lucky to have seen the ARMS Benefit for Ronnie Lane in 83 at the Forum and he was clean. He had a skip in his step again, was smiling and did an amazing job playing "Stairway" solo. We all stood mesmerized and gently swayed as he began. At the end we all sang the last line still entranced by Jimmy.

A lot of people didn’t think he was going to survive. I remember when these concerts came out in 83. It was so sad to see him in such bad shape. And it was so hard to watch the greatest guitarist in the world play so poorly. But he still generated that unexplainable excitement. and it was really cool to just actually see him again. Everyone blaming the drummer has no idea what they’re talking about. He’s widely regarded as one of the best rock drummers ever, and he’s seen here desperately trying to simultaneously do three mutually exclusive things: play the parts, keep time, AND stay with Page, who simply isn’t listening to anyone else he’s playing with. It’s an impossible task. Page’s timing is so wildly erratic, no drummer in the world could have pulled this shit-show out of the fire. He must have been shitting himself every night.

      Easily the best stairway to heaven solo he has ever done. Though there are sharper sound setups in many other versions of his this has notes and creativity from another planet. Illuminati, the golden Dawn, black magic or not his guitar playing is all time. Hate the song and all the Satan shit but can't get away from that mystical solo

    I've never seen someone playing a two-neck guitar in my country, so I have to ask: What's the purpose (goal) of two necks? When do you use the upper neck? Instead of a two-neck guitar, wouldn't it be more interesting a second guitar player in the band ?

    • @As_in_gamer
      @As_in_gamer Před 4 lety

      Stairway to Heaven was recorded on 3 guitars, a harmony 6 string, a fender 12 string and solo recorded on a telecaster, the Gibson EDS1275 (The doubleneck) has 1 neck with 6 strings and a 2nd neck with 12 strings, the 12 strings were needs to play the song live and as jimmy page has said before, why take 2 or 3 guitarists when you can have 1? But to summarise it was basically to make the song possible to perform live

    This solo is actually better than his stairway solo which sounds like mumbling in the 1973 concert, the only imperfection of this version is just Simon Phillip doesn't know him as well as John Bonham.

      Simon Phillips was the drummer, and was actually playing with Jeff Beck. On the night of the show he was asked to play with Jimmy Page. So prior to this perfomance they had maybe run through it once or twice before going on stage.
      I'd say he did a quite solid job - especially considering the state Page was in.

    Re: posts below debating Page kicking dope @ this time. I'll say this- you don't show up to a concert of this magnitude while dope sick. The 12string is way outta tune, Page ain't the same guy gliding around the stage @ MSG in SRtS, but just because its him... it's fantastic. Keep in mind, at this time he'd been a recluse for years.

    I saw the San Francisco show. Jimmy was wasted. Clapton came in early and played over Jimmy to save the song. We had crappy seats at the Cow Palace, we could see Clapton behind the amps playing. Still, probably the most talent I've ever seen on one room and great concert. This tour was the first time Page, Beck and Clapton played together on stage. Page replaced Beck in the Yardbirds. ... Page was the bass player.
