In the us the southern accent gets made fun of in many metropoles (mostly west coast, and NYC area) so many people are pre disposed to dislike it. Witch is a shame because its a really pretty and enduring accent. However from what I can tell most of the world outside of the USA love the accent, I think the southern accent as a whole is so lovely.

I was on holiday in the Greek island of Rhodes and met a family originally from Alabama. I was fascinated by their accent. I've only ever heard this accent in American movies, but it's a beautiful accent. The family were warm and friendly like these lovely ladies. For someone like myself who lives in Europe and only ever visits the Northern states of America, it's trigured a real interest in the southern states and the different culture, traditions and dialects that exist over there. Hopefully next time i visit America, I will make an effort to visit the southern states. Thank you for uploading.

The men followed me around like puppy dogs, waiting for me to say ANYTHING. 😄 I had one guy I met from New Jersey call me once a week just to hear me talk. I had the entire Turkish staff at a pizza joint pull up their chairs around me when I went out for a slice. I was thinking, ya'll all right? It ain't like I'm Dolly Parton or something. 🤣

The Southern accent is very different from standard American English a lot of the time, but on the bright side we tend to talk a lot slower than other parts of the country. I'm actually the other way around, from the Southern US learning Japanese, and I can't understand Japanese spoken somewhat slowly pretty well but full speed is very difficult.
I would think another difficulty in understanding Southerners is the huge amount of idioms/ sayings that are used in everyday conversation.
