My personal theory is that, there was only jourmangander from the soul put into the snakes body. And when Thor send Jourmangander back in time, he told Kratos and young Atreus about Mimir to make sure everything happened the same and to ensure ragnarock will start again.

A closed loop would be practically impossible, because that would imply that there should only be one Jormangamder but there are two which co-exist. Where would have the first Jormangamder come from?
@@abdbay 2 of the same entities can exist in the same timeline, as i explained in my comment and somewhat explained in the game, loki has a giant's soul that he whispers into the snake in ironwood, that snake grows and fights thor, thor sents it back in time to midgard where he stays and tells loki to go to ironwood to effectively close the loop. so again there is no second timeline as 2 entities can be present at the same time, the young version and older version, they just dont physically meet as they are in two different realms.

IMO the original jormungundr timeline is the timeline kratos doesn't change and the prophecies are "true". We may see a version of atreus in a future game looking for the answers of the mask to find vengeance for his dead father. IMO what makes the timelines diverge is fayes meddling because her guidance specifically fought back against prophecy so kratos could respect and learn from his son

I haven't played the Greek parts (yet!), but I do think it is a closed loop in the Norse parts. Just between Ironwood and War of Asgard there are two of Jörmungandr at the same time. One at the Lake of Nine from the "future", and one is somewhere growing up rapidly, who will fight Thor later and get sent back to the past, who is the young version of the one at the lake.

Gia views Kratos as a pawn, so what purpose would she need to speak to dying Kratos so he can resurrect himself to go on the quest thats already been completed. When Kratos returns to the point in time Zeus killed him I believe Kratos killed himself when he pulled out the Blade of Olympus. Fast forward to the point when Kratos picks up the Titans. If you look back on the scene that Atlas is explaining the fall of Titans you can clearly see the titans are time traveling before Zeus banishes them. From Atlas point of view it looks like Zeus killed them. But Kratos only moved them from one section of the time line. Not moving them to a completely different universe or 2nd time line. Fast forward again, Kratos is seemingly living his life with his family. Not knowing that the Quest in 2018 GOW has already happened. Were just seeing it from his point of view. The events leading up to his death happened. the Giants saw it and carved it in stone. Since Kratos knows that its possible to defy fate, Atraus and Kratos get the happy ending. As for the Snake, when future Kratos and Future Atraus in 2018 have their quest. there was no Snake, when Ragnorok happens Atraus gives life to the snake then later on Thor sends it back in time. 2018 GOW characters could have been stuck in a loop that always ended with Kratos dying. But in the recent events they stopped Odin and Kratos survived. Only one time line.

I mean, the other Kratos can appear at any moment and say "I was looking for you" because we don't know where the destiny in his universe will go after killing his sisters of fate. Well take in consideration that Kratos killed him self before Athena, we never got an answer of if he survived. We only saw a bloody mess headed towards an open ocean cliff. But, since there is a deep scar in the stomach area of both Kratos from both separate timelines, how about the one who was stabbed by Zeus comes walking by & simply throws his carcass into the sea & travels to Midgard. Now, this is where things get tricky. In that GOW that Kratos let’s say that he escaped hell, went back to the time chamber & is watching now. This would explain a much younger looking Kratos found at the end of Ragnorock at the end before the sobbing of Kratos. If I’m correct the younger Kratos who’s carcass was throw into the sea will return to shock & surprise everyone in the next installment. Because if he returns it will be as if he never aged because he was just finishing killing his father & returning from hell, although went back to the time chamber & just watched while his self that threw him over the cliff continued to Midgard had a kid & aged. 👍

I see the question you're asking, it has been discussed before but using something different. It's the question of if you took a manuscript from Shakespeare and go back in time to hand it to him, and he uses it the same as normal, the questions comes down to who originally wrote it. The answer would still be Shakespeare, and the answer here is there is no other timeline, technically. For this principle of time travel to work, the travel would not cause a split it would override that history, and make whoever did it, the actually changer a paradox for the previous history

Jormungandr was birthed through Atreus/Loki, grew into his giant state, fought Thor, got sent back in time to before Atreus was born, lived through all of that time, met Atreus again, which is why he looks familiar to Jormungandr, dies, yes, he dies, pretty obviously so if you ask me, but not before telling Atreus about Ironwood. That closes the loop and it starts to repeat itself over and over. Basically, Jormungandr is destined to help Kratos and Atreus, and really serves no other purpose in the games story other than that.

You only needed two timelines for God of War 2 because Kratos fucked around with time Jormungundr just wanted to make sure things went as he remembered. It’s simple though 1. Atreus and kratos meets Old Jörmangandr in the lake in 2018 2. During Ragnarok Atreus puts the soul of the giant Jörmangandr into a snake this giant hates thor a lot. 3. The snake grows immensely very quickly and joins the fight during the ragnarok battle and is sent back in time by a hit from thor. 4. He arrives prior to 2018 and fights thor again to a stalemate. 5. He then goes on to live peacefully in Midgard hibernating until 2018 arrives again and he meets Atreus and kratos. 6. This version after going back in time only helps in small ways and is usually in Midgard sleeping, he was only attacked by baldur and helped atreus and kratos when they were attacked by the giants corpse. Other than that he knows everything already as he lived it hence why he just ensures kratos and atreus either know the right information to ensure their goal and his birth with the gift of his venom and the ironwood information

As much as I love God of War 2018 and Ragnarok, I hate how Ragnarok played out. It felt rushed unfortunately. I know they said that it was supposed to be 2 games for the Norse mythology, but it deserved a 3rd game. Way too many plot holes and unexplained events. Hopefully they will be addressed in the next installment.
This kind of thing is the reason I can’t consider God of War my favorite franchise(tho I do love all the games and the story for the most part). I hate time travel. Now it’s not as bad as Mortal Kombat but I still don’t hate it. Now something as small as the snake being bonked back in time is fine I guess. Jormungundr just wanted to make sure things went as he remembered. Both snakes can be the same snake from the same timeline. There is no reason they can't be. You're overthinking it.
He is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Young Jormungundr (As you can see the Jormungunder in Ragnarok isn't covered in moss and thus must be younger than the one we see throughout the game)
is struck by thor and sent way back in time. Then he just sits and waits. There Is no need for a second time line because Jormungundr was always right there. He was always going to get sent back in time.
What I'm getting at, is Kratos changed the future thus a new time line was created, Jormungundr was always going to get sent back in time, nothing changed. So no new timeline.

It is very clear original soul of Jourmangander the Giant (which in the game isn't said if it was always a snake), is put into the one snake, which does come to the fight and gets sent back in time by thor. From that it becomes the the world serpent we've all come to love, who's too tired of this noise.
But the thing is if jourmungander is sent back in time in ragnarok so he is gonna grow old but the old serpent is already there so the serpent is sent back in the 2018 world so if he is g9nna grow old what is going to happen to the Ragnarok serpent is he gonna die
No, he’ll just continue to chill in Midgard. There is no snake when he goes back in time.
It’s simple though
1. Atreus and kratos meets Old Jörmangandr in the lake in 2018
2. During Ragnarok Atreus puts the soul of the giant Jörmangandr into a snake this giant hates thor a lot.
3. The snake grows immensely very quickly and joins the fight during the ragnarok battle and is sent back in time by a hit from thor.
4. He arrives prior to 2018 and fights thor again to a stalemate.
5. He then goes on to live peacefully in Midgard hibernating until 2018 arrives again and he meets Atreus and kratos.
6. This version after going back in time only helps in small ways and is usually in Midgard sleeping, he was only attacked by baldur and helped atreus and kratos when they were attacked by the giants corpse. Other than that he knows everything already as he lived it hence why he just ensures kratos and atreus either know the right information to ensure their goal and his birth with the gift of his venom and the ironwood information

Im thinkin the snake has one part of Faye soul, we found out the Faye hated Thor, and the snake is who Kratos throwed the axe and it didnt come back. Okay, I really don’t believe in the multi timeline theory. Essentially, the future and past co-exist. Meaning it’s the same snake Atreus revived that’s in the lake of nine. Jormangundr was sent back in time to an undisclosed date and remained there unable to travel between realms, though its birth was in the future. Idk why that’s so confusing? As much as I love God of War 2018 and Ragnarok, I hate how Ragnarok played out. It felt rushed unfortunately. I know they said that it was supposed to be 2 games for the Norse mythology, but it deserved a 3rd game. Way too many plot holes and unexplained events. Hopefully they will be addressed in the next installment.

This kind of thing is the reason I can’t consider God of War my favorite franchise(tho I do love all the games and the story for the most part). I hate time travel. Now it’s not as bad as Mortal Kombat but I still don’t hate it. Now something as small as the snake being bonked back in time is fine I guess. But dealing with this multiple timeline multiverse trash I just hate it. I will never like it. It’s easier to ignore in God of War so that’s why I don’t have such a hate for it as in MK(one of my other “favorite” franchises). Lets not pretend like time travel makes sense i any story. When you re tell a story is it the same word for word each time? They thought that the same meaning is being conveyed so why do more outtakes with recording the lines.
