DragonOS Focal Iridium ACARS/Audio Demod w/ Gr-Iridium + Toolkit (RSP1A, TheBaldGeek, IridiumLive)

  • This video shows how to use the updated Gr-Iridium, Iridium Toolkit, and IridiumLive that will be included in the next DragonOS Focal release. The same will also apply to the next DragonOS Pi64 release as both will have matching setups.
I turned my interest again to Gr-iridium and the toolkit after a user on Twitter known as "TheBaldGeek" pointed out ACARS could be decoded by the newer toolkit. I hope that by building in these updates to DragonOS it will make following the excellent guides here even easier.
    thebaldgeek.gi...
While exploring options for updating and still maintaining compatibility with the IridiumLive project, I reached out to the actual developer. I’m happy to say that the IridiumLive program has been updated and works with the latest GR-Iridium/Toolkit as of now.
Although I mentioned I’d use multiple SDRs, I only ended up using the RSP1A throughout the video. I used it to capture data into a file, parse it, and then play back audio found within the data. Also showed how to receive and view Iridium ACARS messages from aircraft in real time. There's also an included map example with the toolkit that provides another way of viewing satellite coverage and other information.
Towards the end I show how to get IridiumLive up and running. This is another interesting interface because it provides a web visualizer for gr-iridium frames.

Oh, cool! You got the RSP1A working with gr-iridium. Congrats! I could never get it working, I always got infinite "Detector in burst squelch" errors.
The RSP's are known for having very good sensitivity at L-band. How does it compare to the HackRF or BladeRF for capturing Iridium? Thanks for your videos again, mate!

Working pretty well on my laptop w/ the latest updates, took me a little to find settings that worked. I’ll be updating and trying on the Pi next, but it does seem to require a good amount of processing power. I’ll give the other radios another try, actually meant to in this video but got sidetracked with demodulation on audio haha.. I kept stopping things before I had enough data.

With my BladeRF, if i leave gr-iridium capturing all day and into the evening, I'll get between 56-63% for the 'ok_avg' value. Slightly better than my HackRF, but I see your RSP1A was sitting at 81% after a fair while. Impressive. My have to order a second RSP1A for Iridium duties! Thanks mate =)

Glad to Finally see CHIRP on here!!! But please either install the binary version from the site or the actual DEB file which they now have!. The version you have installed seems like an Ugly Flatpak, or it just doesnt adapt to the XFCE theme. the Binary and deb both do. Also please as the FMRadio app...for those who simply want to use the RTL-SDR or similar to just listen to FM radio in a simple way. IT comes as an AppImage and perhaps source.. I don't know.

As far as I know I have got the latest release of DragonOS Focal. Running SDR# within it there is no option to select the SDRPlay RSP1A in the drop-down. Is it possible to update DragonOS Focal to include it?
I think in an older version of DragonOS Focal SDR# did have the option for the SDRPlay RSP1A. The values that are in the RSP1A.conf file can be adjusted according to what the settings are best in SDR#. The only thing is there are no value against some of the settings in SDR#.

Still trying to get this setup working on and off. When capturing data it seems to run ok for a while then it starts to lose frames occasionally. The ok rate is about 30,40 or 50% not about the 60/70% recommended. My laptop is a few years old but is a pentium processor i7 about 2ghz 4 core using I think so wouldn't of thought it would struggle with the amount of data. Hi, I know it isn’t relevant to this video except DragonOS, how do I decode VDL2 using DumpVDL2 within DragonOs with an RTL SDR or the SDRPlay RSP1A. Is it possible?
If it is possible do you know of any videos or documents that show how to set it up?
I have got the MultiPSK software that can decode it but can’t workout how to set up VDL2 decoding with that yet.
Also on my desktop computer Windows 10, when I start MultiPSK I get an error message saying the line in on the sound card is in use by another program. It starts up on my laptop Windows 11 ok though but not really sure how to set it up.
Regarding Inmarsat 25 E, the audio channels don’t seem to be there anymore or they are weak. The data modes are weak too. 54 W maybe be a bit better but it’s at quite a low elevation from where I am.
If you can help with VDL2 reception setup and the Inmarsat reception I would appreciate it.

      github.com/alphafox02/flightview_gui/blob/main/docker-compose-dumpvdl2.yml
But on DragonOS it’s just installed native and available at a command line prompt. You can also use sdrplay equipment. I need to check your original message, you’re intending to use DragonOS or something else?

      github.com/szpajder/dumpvdl2?tab=readme-ov-file#basic-usage
You’ll find command line examples for rtlsdr an sdrplay. Just start it with dumpvdl2 and not ./dumpvdl2 and use the remaining part of each example, that’ll get you going. In windows I’m not familiar. A virtual machine of DragonOS, docker, or WSL is your best bet.

Hi, after installing Dragonos Focal alongside Windows 10, I have a few questions if you don't mind.
First when I log in there is a black screen background instead of the one with the circuit board, is that supposed to be like that?
At the bottom left hand corner there is an icon which enables you to select various software, including SDR# but there's no icon on the installed version.
There is no way I don't think to open a terminal from the toolbar along the bottom, I have to go to my computer, open that and select it under the I think it's the action menu.
There is no way of exiting the software, maybe because that icon is missing.
When I try to open the internet I get an error saying cannot find server. I provided the details required during installation.
Also I can't remember if it was the live version or when running it in Virtual Box or Virtual Player, I got the icon for the software and in SDR#, SDRPlay wasn't an option in the dropdown.
Also, is the tracking pad on a laptop supposed to work in Dragonos Focal because mine doesn't. I can move the curser around but to click on something I have to press the left button underneath to select anything.
I also get an error when I enter iridium-extractor -D 4 /usr/src/gr-iridium/examples/rsp1a.conf > output.bits, saying something like file doesn't exist or permission required access not allowed.
With the installed version do I need to use sudo in front of the commands?
    Thank you in advance.

When you say alongside windows, are you saying bare metal in its own partition and selectable in dual boot or do you mean in a Vm within windows?
If it’s within a VM there could be a slew of things, such as resolution cutting off the bottom and maybe the internet interface not being shared into the Vm.
For the black background.. that’s such an annoying Lubutnu bug that seems there’s no solving besides right clicking the desktop and going into desktop preferences, changing the option from solid background to a selectable background. Then navigating to /usr/share/lubutnu I think it is and finding the background. I’ll get the exact location and reply.
