I work at as a cashier for a small grocery store, and one day when it was really busy we all heard someone faintly yell "help" in the distance. I'm just a cashier, so I look at my manager to see what's happening, and she was clearly trying to decide whether she heard it or if it was her imagination. anyway, a customer runs up to the front and says "a woman just fell over by the meat coolers and there's blood everywhere!" naturally my manager runs over there and all of us cashiers get told to stay at the front and ring up the customers that are already there. apparently the "blood" was actually red wine since she was holding a wine bottle when she fell, but she had slipped on a grape or something and BROKE HER FUCKING KNEE. We called an ambulance, which was there for a good 45 minutes while they tried to get her off the ground. I never got to see what the person looked like since I was sent to replace the guy vacuuming rugs (coincidentally he had a knee cramp), but I have to assume the lady was really old
edit: I probably should have watched the first 5 seconds of the video to see this was about black friday

This is actually really fitting timing, considering I just got off work and have a story to tell.
I work retail in a grocery store and was rushing to finish up for the night because we were behind. Anyway, I'm on the front door while a coworker does the final walk to check for customers when a woman enters the porch to ask if we were still open. I check the time: "Sorry, we closed at 10pm, but there's another location nearby that's 24 hours," and I show her the pager that reads 10:03pm. She tells me that it isn't right, and shows me her phone that says... 10pm.
After some back and forth of me telling her that she's not allowed to enter her complaining, she went past me anyway. She later told my coworkers that "I am not leaving until I find what I'm looking for."
I'll be honest, the audacity and sheer entitlement of this woman really rubbed me the wrong way, but you wanna know what she wanted? A salad. All of that over a stupid salad. But you know what? She never got her stupid salad because we had none left. I'll take that as a win, I guess 😅

I worked at Walmart a decade ago. The card reader went down on all registers on Black Friday. People did not understand that hand keying took longer than swiping and was not guaranteed to work. Some banks auto declined hand keying the card.

i worked as a cashier for, apparently, a very child-targeted business a few years ago
On the first day of school, we were fucking packed from about when school let out to way after i clocked out
10 minutes before the end of my shift (which was the end of my work week), our card readers go down
i call our boss, who got IT on the line and i spent the next 20ish minutes asking the IT lady to repeat what she said because there were about 30 children within earshot and about 6 of them were doing their best to imitate a smoke alarm with a low battery
and i had to be under the register to fix it, meaning we were down one register on what i’m 90% sure was the busiest day of the year
dunno what i did to deserve that hell

I worked In A Walmart. People were fighting over TVs.
Stealing stuff out of peoples carts.
Someone throwing small appliances to people and they hit people in the head.
A police officer got punched, knocked down and trampled.
I was supposed to be on the sales floor to help people.
I went and hid in the bathroom and in the back room! 😳😱
After it was over the store looked like a war zone.

Ooooooh, it is my time to shine!
I worked retail for most of my early adult life. Gamestop, Walmart, & Kroger Specifically!
I have your standard Black Friday horror stories! Old ladies getting into literal fist fights over towel sets, limited TV riots, and the usual, "What do you mean you only had a limited stock!? THATS FALSE ADVERTISING! I'LL SUE!!"
However, the story that stands out the most was the woman who intentionally injured me at work!
So, i was working at Walmart then and it was the Holiday season when the Wii first came out. Anyone old enough to remember it, likely still recalls how stupidly impossible the Wii was to get your hands on, especially that first year or so when they came out! The amount of crap we took from folks over Nintendo only sending each store like 4 or 5 units at a time was nuts! We got called all kinds of names and people came up with sooo many crazy conspiracy theories about us hiding them to sell on Ebay, or only selling to friends, or intentionally hiding them for Black Friday, like we heard it all!
One day, i'm doing my usual stuff, talking to a guy about a flat screen TV he wanted. He decides on the size and model he wants and I start to head to the back to check and make sure we still have that one in stock. As i walk away from this guy and make my way to the back end doors (our electronics section was against the back wall by the docks) a giant fat lady in an Amigo, one of those motorized carts, decides the best way to get my attention is to slam into me at full speed.
I was not a big girl at the time and so this knocked me completely off my feet and sent me into the corner of an endcap. I hit it, feel a terrible pain and land on the floor. My shirt ripped at my shoulder and my skin underneath was BURNING! I clap a hand to it and pull it away, and yeah, i'm bleeding pretty badly. I look up at this woman, who just rammed into me and she rolls her freaking eyes at me. She then asks in the thickest accent i have ever heard "Esceuoose me!" she gives me a glare as i'm clearly getting pissed now, then she opens her fat gob and the works "Do Ya'll have any Wii's" dribbles out her mouth like barbecue sauce fleeing for its life from her gaping maw.
I lost it! i yelled "No! No one has any Wii's!"
This fat sack of crap then clicks her tongue at me and puts her cart into reverse grumbling about how rude i am! My manager comes over nad helps pick me up off the floor and sends one of the big guys to get the TV for my customer while i clean myself up and they call maintenance for a blood spill. I have a genetic issue that makes it hard for us to clot, so we bleed a lot easily, and this was a significant wound!
They take care of my customer and call my roomie, who worked as a customer service center rep, and she took me to the band aid station to see if i actually needed stitches. Luckily i didn't nad they butterfly bandaged me up.
When we got back we learned that the woman who rammed me went to front end management and tried to complain about me being rude! I had one of the few good managers in the store named JD and he went to bat for me, and got her banned from the store. he wouldn't have, but he lost it after she tried to get me fired and made sure i wasn't gonna lose my job after having to have a puddle of my blood wiped off his floor. I worked the rest of my shift with a torn shirt and my arm bandaged. Walmart sucked soooo bad!

Ok, so for my next story makes for a good pallet cleanser for you all!
This time, i'm working at Kroger on the day before Thanksgiving (the biggest food based holiday here, for those of you all not in the US). We have limited hours and our stuff is picked over like crazy from last minute shoppers. i'm one of the more experienced cashiers so, i'm taking care of the last few customers while folks clean up so we can all go home and enjoy our holidays! I'm the last cashier on register taking care of the last couple of stragglers while folks up front send away people banging on our locked doors demanding to be let in!
Things were going smoothly until folks escort a lady with two carts to the front who had ignored every broadcast about how the store was closing and wanted to just keep shopping. She was already pissed off, and not shy about letting us know about it. They had already been turning off lights and stuff, so it was pretty obvious we were closing and ready to go, but this woman, the perfect portrait of a white upper middle class Karen, bleached bob cut and all, feels entitled to keep us all there as she hems and haws about her purchases. So i'm ringing her up with my manager bagging, so i have to be on my best behavior and smile through her every insult!
I do so and before too long both carts are rung up and in bags, and now every manager is here at my line helping bag as the moment she is gone we all get to go!
I scan her plus card and make a big show about how much it saved, like we are supposed to, as again, all manager eyes are on me.
Customer just kinda snears at me and inserts her hard.
. . . it gives me a card read error! My heart drops! Did they already shut off the computers to the card readers!?
I tell her and she yells about knowing that there is cash on the card! I tell her that the card wasn't declined that the chip reader didn't read it. I convince her to try it again.
      . . . same error.
Now she starts insulting me and insisting i don't know how to work my register and yells about knowing she has money on that card. Again, that is not the error i'm getting! My computer just says it couldn't read the card. This happens some times and its usually just an issue with the chip. I suggest she swipes it the old way using the black magnetic strip. sometimes that actually works!
She glares at me and very angrily slashes her card through it, which causes it to read all of nothing. I try to gently tell her to go a bit slower, my equipment is old. She swipes her card running her mouth about how dumb i am and about how she knows she has the money on the card bragging about how much money she has as she has a "real" job and makes great money!
      It fails again!
I look at my managers and we exchange a look of horror like, oh gods why now!? why this customer!?
Then i recall that my register is one of the few that still has the old old card reader strip built into the touch screen monitor!
I suggest she let me swipe it there and she throws her card at me while screaming about how she knows she has at lest $300k on that card, and that i'm just an idiot who doesn't know how to do my job! Before i swipe it i realize that something feels off. I flip the card over and find the issue. . .
She has been very angrily swiping her drivers license this entire time!
I turn it around, photo up and had it back to her, informing her that its her ID, not her credit card.
She turns beat red, fishes her ACTUAL card out of her purse, and wouldn't you know it! it works first try!
Turns out she did not, in fact, have $300k on her driver's license. The moment the doors shut behind our Karen friend, we all just lost it, dying laughing at the woman!
She remained the butt of many jokes until i finally quit that terrible job!
"I know my ID has at least $300k on it!" ahh, good times!

I have a TON of silly retail/food service stories so hit me up if you ever wanna hear more!
I quit Kroger when they tried to fire me after falling down stairs and ripping the stitches out from a recent surgery, and got hired by my girlfriend (now wife's) father doing security! It sooo much better, and the worst i get are truck drivers coming in who don't wanna take orders from a woman. However, if i say you can't come into my facility, you cannot come into my facility period, so most trouble drivers quickly relent!
Crap, i should really tell the stories about Walmart trying to fire me for being kept by the ER, as well as that surgery story! one sec while i get to typing!

    • @MeatbagTheMighty
      @MeatbagTheMighty Před měsícem +4

Let's start off with how i quit Kroger! I've told this story before a few places, so you all may have heard it already!
So, i had to have emergency surgery back in February of 2020, riiight before the pandemic hit us all! It was a major surgery and i had stitches holding my guts in place afterwards! My doctors wanted me to take more time as my health isn't great and I did have complications! My store manager decided that i had already taken off enough time and HAD to be back.
I was working as a cashier at Kroger, so i was making essentially peanuts. I needed the money so i agreed to come back early against my doctor's orders!
That morning i'm getting myself ready for work, shower, brushed hair, put on my makeup, get my uniform on, and i'm ready to head downstairs to get my purse and walk to work. I didn't live too far from the store and couldn't afford a car, so i always walked to work! Today my body had other ideas. i get maybe two steps down the stairs and suddenly my entire world goes blurry and i tumble the rest of the way down.
At the landing i take a few moments to process what happened before trying to get up. My body is just not having it and all i can do i lay there crying, feeling my body shake. I realize after a moment that my hands clutching my lower stomach are wet and sticky. I've ripped my stitches open and blood is flowing into my hands and all over my uniform.
I call out for my roommate, but she has already left for the day and i am home alone. After a while i drag myself into the living room where my purse and phone are resting on the coffee table for me to grab on the way out to work! I'm in too much pain to stand so, i literally drag myself a few feet, stop and regain my strength, and then continue on until i reach the table.
Once i get there i call my girlfriend (my wife now), and tell her what happened and that i need help! She agrees, but doesn't drive, so she gets her father and they both come rushing over to take me to the hospital to get my stitches put back in!
While they are on their way to come save me and rush me to the hospital, I call my boss to let her know what is going on.
She puts me on hold for a while, and the store manager gets on the line.
"You must come in for your shift today"
I tell her that i am in the middle of a serious medical emergency and that I am headed to have this giant bleeding hole in my tummy closed back up!
This inhuman waste of flesh tells me that I will be written up and lose my chance at the promotion i'd been training for if I don't come in immediately as my call off cannot be accepted any later than four hours before my shift.
Again i tell her that I was on my way to work when i fell! that i have a hole in me and can see down into the meat of my body!
She says that i can work my 8 hour shift and then go to the hospital afterwards, but that i WILL be there for that shift.
This woman expects me to stand at a register, on my feet with a giant hole in my stomach just smiling and ringing up groceries, because clearly THAT's totally safe for both myself and my customers!
Shortly after I hang up, my girlfriend comes running in and literally picks me up.
She is a trans woman and this was before her transition, so at the time she is much bigger and stronger than i am and picking me up is nothing to her! I'm crying in her arms and telling her what my boss told me.
Her father turns purple with rage! He yells that I am NOT working a shift with my guts hanging out (a bit of an exaggeration, but not that far off really), and he rushes me to the ER. They keep me, i get patched up, and my doctor puts me on MUCH stricter restrictions and gives me another month of recovery time, sending my awful boss the paperwork and, from what i hear, a strongly worded letter.
While recovering, my now Father-in-law tells me that i am not going back there and not to worry about getting fired.
He has me fill out an application to his security company, and hires me on the spot with my start date being just after my scheduled start time.
I ended up coming in a week sooner as they fired a guard for theft of all things, but i was much better by then!
On my day to return to Kroger i marched in holding my, now pretty heavily stained uniform under my arm and wearing my street clothes. My manager stopped me as i came in and informed me that the Store manager was demanding to see me in her office.
She knew i was there to quit, but i was one of her best cashiers, and somehow i guess she was hoping the Store manager and I would work things out. I smiled and marched upstairs to the Store Manager's office. there she had a union rep and one of the other managers as witnesses.
Their faces drop when i come in with my uniform under my arm and a smile on my face. I inform her that she can save her paperwork as i'm quitting on the spot and toss my blood stained uniform onto her desk. It was washed, but the stain was pretty well set in and wasn't coming out.
I tell her that I found a new job paying a dollar more an hour than what i'd have earned even with my promotion!
All three of their jaws dropped as i smiled and went to turn away.
"Y-you still have to sign this paper, and one telling the union that you are resigning"
I happily told her sure, and cheerfully grabbed the pen
"You know leaving without a two weeks notice means you can't ever be re-hired here!"
"Yeah! sure!" i almost sang as I quickly signed my name on her forms
I informed her that the uniforms were washed, but i couldn't get my blood out, and then turned and left with an absolute skip in my step. As i left the building, my manager and coworkers just watched as i beamed smiles at them and left for good!
Shortly then later, Covid hit and the world of retail got so, soooo much worse! I rode it out in my office watching security monitors and playing on my phone in an empty building as it required 24/7 security presence even if the building is empty otherwise. I made so much money and played so much Stardew Valley!
Today i'm making more money doing security than the max i could have earned without going salary and losing my union benefits working at Kroger.
For all retail workers looking to escape and make better money, seriously consider security! The job is always in demand, the pay is better, and you get waaaaay more respect, even as a "rent-a-cop" then you ever will working with customers! Especially if you have a clean criminal record like i do and can work in places that need a clearance check!

Now for the much less fun Store tried to fire me for a health emergency story!
For this one we are going back to that same Walmart i worked at where the woman rammed me into an endcap to ask about Wiis!
So, this was around 2009, and i was pretty fresh out of school! I was working the Photo lab now, as they switched from the old chemical photo development to an all computerized method, and the lady who ran it, was NOT tech savvy and was struggling! I loved her to death, even if she was a bit of a dingus at times!
I had been sick and working through it as my roomie and i were barely making it off of our Walmart paychecks. I'd been sick for a few weeks, which isn't too unusual for me. I was born preemie and have been sickly for my entire life. So, i was just there toughing through it!
Suddenly my stomach begins cramping like nothing i have ever felt in my life! Naturally, folks blew it off as just that time of the month. I knew this wasn't right, partially because that had already happened a week ago, and also because that is NOT what this felt like!
The pressure just kept building up and getting worse and worse until i found myself laying on top of one of the breakroom tables and holding my abdomen, just writhing in agony!
my area manager, Katie - a total tool bag - walked in, saw me on the table, surrounded by coworkers as we are trying to figure out how we are getting me to the hospital. She starts yelling at us for not being out on the floor and working.
By now my face is sheet white and i am drenched in sweat! clearly, i am NOT ok! I tell her that i have to go to the ER and she rolls her eyes at me.
"Are you sure?" she says with her hands on her hip her lip curled at having to actually speak with me.
I tell her that i have no choice. I literally think i may be dying!
She again rolls her eyes and says, "Fine, but you have to bring in a doctor's note!"
      No prob!
I am going straight to the hospital! I am not passing Go, and you all can stuff your $200! I just don't wanna die for just a hair over minimum wage!
My roomie can't leave her post as this manager is a total piece of work, so my mother leaves her work, comes in and runs me to the ER, then has to leave me in the lobby and rush back.
I tell the check in folks what's going on and they hand me paperwork and wheel me into the lobby as i was in too much pain to work. Before i can even finish the paperwork i throw up the foulest tasting thing i have ever experienced. It smelled like diarrhea, and didn't taste much better.
The instant this happened the staff flew into a flurry and rushed me back then and there.
Turns out it was not just period cramps. My intestines had twisted themselves into a knot and nothing was passing through. I was very quickly going septic and even nearly died!
I was kept for two weeks, most of which i spent asleep. I don't even recall how it was fixed! I just recall waking up every now and then surrounded by friends and family, then passing back out!
Here is where the story gets so. . . so dumb.
So, i'm at the hospital, hooked into the wall like i'm part woman part machine with all kinds of fluids being pumped in and around, and so, soo many monitors hooked up! I call my boss during one of the moments i was awake, and let them know what is going on and that i have been kept and am not sure when i'll be released as i very nearly died!
Katie tells me that i have to bring in my doctors note or i will be fired for a no call, no show. I said, no prob, i'll have my roommate bring it in.
She tells me No. That I have to physically bring it in. I tell her that I can't physically bring it in to her right now without dragging an entire hospital room in behind me. She tells me that i'll just have to find a way. Eventually, I call back and get someone sane on the line, and they agree to let my mother bring the note in for me as again, i am literally bed ridden and attached to a wall in the hospital, fading in and out of consciousness randomly!
My mother gets the note from some very confused hospital staff and marches to Walmart to turn it in. Everything should be covered and we can now focus on my recovery!
Eventually I do recover! (Shocking Twist, right! lol) I call HR to let them know and get my schedule so i can return to work.
      "we were told you quit"
What? No i didn't I've been hospitalized all this time! I never quit!
"well, you were told to bring a doctor's note and we never got it, so we put you down for job abandonment."
I told them that that can't have been right, my mother brought in the note, and here I am following up now that we have a date that i can return!
So, i call my mother and ask her what happened with that note. she says she did take it in and gave it to a manager. I ask her which one and she says she doesn't know. She then describes the person she gave it to. A tall, fat woman, with long black hair. . . Katie. Knowing this, i physically go to work, walk into the HR office and start trying to work all this out and save my shitty job!
They inform me that without the note, they can't really do anything about it, and Katie is pretending to not know anything at all about the note.
Pretty sure she had wanted to fire me ever since the time i asked her what it felt like to have no soul. . . well, i asked it at her and pretended i said something else when asked. In my defense, this woman was the absolute worst! like, she thought she was some kind of royalty because she kissed enough butt to get promoted, and was just soo above the rest of us lowly peons! Plus, i honestly don't think she has a soul, so. . .
After asking some coworkers, my roomie and I find folks who witnessed my mother bring in the note, yell at Katie because she was being Katie, and then watched he waddle to the customer service table at register 20 and set it down. #20 was the center lane the customer service managers used like home base while running the front. it was the biggest lane and had the cigarettes behind it, so it made a good staging area!
I march over and dig though weeks of papers, and lo and behold, there it is! my doctors note had been abandoned there with my medical information just lying out in the open for all to see. I took it to HR and they very quickly told me i'd be added back to the schedule.
I probably could have sued them over it and the negligent handling of my medical information, but i was young, pretty shy, and was just happy to still have a job!
Katie would eventually got demoted, transferred, and eventually fired, after one of the bakery workers had a heart attack after telling her she needed to leave, fell off work stool and broke her head open. She wasn't demoted for threatening to fire the woman if she went to the hospital to get help. . . she was punished because she ordered someone to just mop her blood into an open drain breaking all kinds of health and safety protocols.
Working at Walmart was wild, and actually pretty scarring. I actually had a nightmare years after i quit, that i was still working there, and was called in for a shift and then could not get anyone to let me leave for the entire day. . .
So, yeah. . . probably the worst place I've ever worked!

DG management had to deal with 3 black (yes it's real) kids that destroyed the store and the next day they came back and did it again the assistant manager called the police and when the kids were at the register there was 1 kid who stole a pair of socks and was wearing them the manager said "are you wearing socks that you stole" and of course he said "no" long story short, I wish they got arrested, but they were charged with trespassing

I worked at an amusement park when I was in high school. We had two slightly different gift shops that were next to each other but had a doorway through from one to the other, so you could be in one of them but not be visible to the staff in the other. A lady came in near closing and was looking at stuff alternately in both shops. At some point I hadn't seen her in awhile and wasn't sure she was still there, but I noticed her car keys were on the counter in front of my register. However, we had been officially closed for awhile and if she had left without them she wouldn't have been able to get back into the park. I was just holding them up and asking my coworker if she was still there when she came through the door from the other shop and accused me of spying on her because she was (a different race than I am). There was no way to respond to that beyond, "I was afraid you'd left without your keys," which she grabbed out of my hand before marching out, accusing us all of all kinds of things. No, lady--you left your car keys on a random counter in a public place and I was afraid you wouldn't be able to get home, but OK. That was one of those jobs that teaches you why you want to get some kind of post-high school education so you don't have to do that kind of work for the rest of your life.

My Black Friday story is less about the customers and more about the fact that I had to go in. I worked part time in retail, part time nanny. I still have the nanny job, but now work part time at another store. My nanny job is and has always been Wednesday to Friday. Fridays are the longest days where I'm there for over eight hours. I made the mistake of posting on Facebook how I finally didn't have to work a Black Friday for the first time in years and how excited I was about that. My manager saw (she was new so I didn't know yet how much of a workaholic she is) and got angry, asking why I have that day off when every employee has to work that day. I reminded her that I always had Fridays off and that had been the case since April, since I had to babysit all day. She changed my schedule so I had to come in and work right after babysitting. She was all "it's only for three hours, you'll be fine." She didn't see the issue when I told her I would be working 11 hours, because she's a little crazy and always working 24/7. I couldn't argue because I liked that job. So I very begrudgingly went and the shift ended up being four hours, because she wanted to do a thorough job cleaning up the store after closing. We later found out that she always made us stay late because she was in an unhappy marriage and stalled going home (I don't think it was abusive, they just hated each other). On one hand I felt bad that her marriage had fallen apart, but I also resented her for making it her employees' problem too. I was so pissed that day.

Worked as a cashier at a supermarket. Was cashing out a presumably Hispanic family that barely understood English. They were starting to get upset at me when their WIC card wasn't covering some of their items, like a gallon of milk. I show them and they are NOT having it. So the MOD at the time (really cool guy by the way) went to see what's up. I asked the family if they wanted me to void the milk, making sure to talk slow and clear and enunciating some words to make sure they could understand me. They said yes, and even the MOD heard that. They were FURIOUS and told me to put it back on while all yelling at me. I wanted to curl up and cry, but the MOD told me to step back so he could handle this. After they are finally cashed out and out of the store, I felt like I have survived a war. Thousand yard stare and all. The MOD told me to take a short break. That was the worst transaction I have ever tendered, thankfully. Never seeing that family again would be too soon. Every time WIC doesn't cover something, I get Vietnam flashbacks...
To those who don't know what a WIC program is, they are basically like foodstamps, but cover specific items in specific quantities. So it's a government thing.

I both love and hate WIC. I have a younger cousin who is mentally handicapped and she had been throwing up nearly all morning. I volunteered to go to Walmart and pick up apple juice for her, it was all we could get her to drink. Well I forgot it was the 1st and the only juice they had was juicy juice. I grabbed it and went up front to pay, only to have this obese woman on a scooter demand I give her the juice. I just walked away and got to the front, she saw me pay with my uncles WIC card and told me "Why didn't you say you had children?". I still hate the 1st of the month

I worked one Walmart black Friday in Western NY (like an hour outside Rochester and Buffalo, almost directly between them). I'm clarifying the area to let you know that at that time of year, it's fucking freezing- snow is blowing, it's wet and cold. I ended up driving to my parents house, which was between my job and my house so that my momma could take me to work and I wouldn't have to fight for parking. Every employee was scheduled that day and our two 15 min breaks were reduced to one and our hour lunches to 30 mins. I was a cashier and my front end manager shoved me in a hoodie, a rain poncho, and a high viz vest and sent me outside to be a human traffic cone until we opened. Then I was on register. We had every single lane open, even those we never used; the sale stuff went in the first hour and a half; and then we had some trickling lines for another hour. By 2.5 hours of us being open, the chaos was gone; the sales stuff was sold out; customers were basically gone; and the store was a mess. I ended up spending a large portion of my time doing re-shops (putting away the items people change their minds on/shove in the wrong places). It was chaotic to begin with but I was shocked at how subdued it was after that. My best friend worked at another nearby Walmart a couple years after I moved away and she got pinned against a bin of DVDs after having to hold customers back from a sales display wrapped in plastic that she was finally allowed to cut open just a couple mins before nearly being trampled and getting pinned.

Had a funny moment one Black Friday working at Walmart- we had set an empty display box aside in one of the isles and were using it as a trash bin. At one point a lady went out of her way to go around and up the opposite side of the isle to peer into the box, then left. I imagine she saw the box and thought us greedy employees were trying to hide product, only to see it full of trash and awkwardly shuffle away.

I worked Black Friday twice. Never again. Management had been up our asses about overtime, but asked me and a couple of others to stay an extra two hours. I said, as long as it's on my check, fine. I was there THREE hours passed when I was supposed to go home (2am), cold because I worked in the garden center, and stuck at work because my entire family was asleep. I couldn't call a cab (Uber wasn't a thing yet) because I had no money, and NONE of my coworkers were headed my way. Pretty sure one of my bosses paid for a cab, but I honestly don't remember. Was so tired by the time I got home.

Fun fact: never use a fire extinguisher in that way. Most fire extinguishers are a chemical called ab dry chem.

Late to this, and also not a retail worker, but my family doesn’t go out in Black Friday after what happened some odd years ago. Me and my parents went to a local mall that had a place called Main Event in it, it’s like Dave and Busters for those who aren’t familiar, and ultimately we only ended up eating and leaving. We went to the parking garage to go home when we found little bits of metal, which we found strange until we looked ahead and saw that our car was sandwiched between two others. There was a car pile, about five cars smushed together including ours, that we later learned was caused by some wacko speeding in the parking garage. The car had to be fixed, only the right passenger door luckily, and we decided from then on to never go out on Black Friday again. My mother, the owner of the car, doesn’t even drive anymore and we still refuse to go out on Black Friday

I work as a cashier at a small grocery store, and one hectic day, we heard a faint “help” from somewhere in the store. Being just a cashier, I looked to my manager to see what was going on, and she seemed unsure if she really heard it or if it was just her imagination. Suddenly, a customer burst in, shouting that a woman had collapsed by the meat coolers and there was blood everywhere!
Naturally, my manager dashed off to check it out, while the rest of us were instructed to stay at the registers and handle the customers in line. It turned out that the “blood” was actually red wine-apparently, the woman had been holding a bottle when she fell and had slipped on a grape or something. To top it off, she had broken her knee!
We called an ambulance, which took about 45 minutes to arrive and help her get off the floor. I didn’t get to see her since I was sent to replace the guy vacuuming rugs (who, by the way, had a knee cramp himself). From the commotion, I have to assume she was quite elderly.

I worked the 2011 Black Friday at Wal-Mart. This was back when people were getting maimed just waiting for the stores to open. (Midwest, so icy parking lots and sidewalks)
I had to stand next to a couple of pallets that where shrink wrapped and needed to be open in 2 hours. A large crowd formed one hour before I was told to cut the wrap.
Well, no one was standing for _that_ they had other shopping to do, after all. So, a guy pulls out a knife and cuts the shrink wrap. I got out of there quick after reminding everyone that the registers won't scan the correct price for another hour.
I laughed when they asked if I was willing to do the next year's Black Friday. Not even if you paid me $100/hr.
    Edit: Other Wal-Marts get catering?!

Had some douche bag steal a motorized animal from my kiosk on black Friday. So i couldn't chase him down, had a line of customers. I normally would chase the theif down, stop them, inform them that the animals weren't free and if they didn't act like a complete ass hole, i wouldn't report them to security. It happened at least once a week and almos5 everyone were really sorry and apologetic as hell.no, it'snot policy to just let them go, I usually give people a chance because it's usualy a stupid teen who didn't think before doing. But again, too busy to give chase so the second i don't have someone to deal with, I call security. This is actually a common problem and the security people were all over it. When caught by security they're usually asked to leave the area or be tresspassed buly cops and a security agent will return the animal. So i put the issue out of my mind. Until a woman shows up and starts screaching at me that her husband wasn't stealling and she was going to pay for him....well it was a whole fiasco and one of the MANY reasons why i am happy to be an at homemom now.
