I Bought A Rare 911 You've Probably Never Heard Of

- I'm not sure what has come over me, but I've gone and bought another car, just a few weeks after picking up my Abarth 595! Whilst I'm sure some of you out there know all about this car, I believe it's a forgotten gem that needs celebrating.
I'm sure it will come as no surprise that I was missing having a Porsche in my life. Ever since I sold my 911 Carrera T earlier in the year, I've not hidden the fact I was hoping to get another Porsche at some point in the future, but I didn't think it would be this soon.
Here is a great article telling you more about the 911 40th Anniversary:
www.total911.com/996-40th-ann...
The Anniversary should be included among them as, unlike Porsche’s ill-considered Millennium Edition of 2000, the ‘40 Jahre’ car’s specification verges on perfection. Visually it is a demonstration of dignified restraint, perhaps with the exception of the shot-blasted and polished 18-inch Carrera II lightweight wheels. With the finish of those wheels prone to damage, many Anniversary cars have had their alloys refurbished with a more conventional painted finish. That might rob them of their originality, but does arguably improve the looks.
Elsewhere the Anniversary follows a proven Porsche formula that defines a special model. It does so without dropping any weight; as any 40-year old will testify, shifting bulk is tricky. The 996 is fairly light as standard though: the Anniversary’s kerb weight of 1,370kg matches that of the standard Gen2 Carrera. Instead of losing mass, Porsche focused on other facets to improve the offering with the Anniversary, particularly relating to how it drives.
Key to the Anniversary’s spec is the addition of an X51 Powerkit. It’s an option that would have added around £9,000 to a standard Carrera should you have asked for it back in the early 2000s. The X51 sees the power rise to 345bhp. Admittedly it’s not a significant gain over the 320bhp Carrera, but writing off the X51’s revisions on the modest bhp gain alone is to do the not-insubstantial revisions it brings a serious disservice.
The Powerkit adds cast-aluminium intake manifolds with a modified cross section, the exhaust ducts too benefiting by being larger in their width and being flow optimised thanks to machining and polishing. The valvetrain differs too: the valves and their springs, caps, guides and seats are changed over the standard car, allowing increased movement to benefit the X51 camshaft’s greater inlet valve stroke and modified inlet and exhaust timing.
The lubrication system is improved with a different dual-chamber suction pump for cylinder bank four to six, new oil lines and the oil pan coming with bulkhead baffles to help prevent high g-force oil surge. The changes via the X51 are anecdotally said to improve the durability of the 3.6-litre flat six because it counters the under-lubrication of cylinder six, with the benefit of helping prevent overheating and premature wear.
Controlling all that is a modified engine map which, like all the X51 Powerkit’s development, was apparently the work of the Motorsport department. That arguably makes X51-equipped cars ‘under-the-counter’ GT machines, and worth seeking out.

The "If you know, you know" type of car.
Can you list a few more of these kinds of cars? So I could be in the know :).
@@HiddenWen I'd say the GT3 Touring? Another dream car of mine.
@@gpb3762 911 Speedster too. To many people, looks like just another 911 cabriolet.
GPB ah the gt3 with out any aero nice choice. Just seen Jonny’s interview with Chris. He has a nice yellow one
@@omarcominhayyo8180 yup. It was a great interview too.
This is what I love about your channel, you do things for you and it comes across really genuine and not contrived. I hate when people are clearly buying cars for views or just what their audience wants, it’s so obvious.
Couldn't imagine having to spend money on a car that I didn't like just to get views
Yeah I agree, the whole ‘I BOUGHT THE NEWEST SUPERCARS” gets boring really fast because you know it’ll go within 6 months and have the same boring videos
@@carreragt8516Exactly.
TheStradman dislike your comment.
Keeping it classy Sam, it's why we love your stuff
Sam you do not miss when it comes to cars
I totally agree, few people are aware of this Gem, more even because they look down on a superb series model because it’s got the fried egg headlights. The 996 will be a seriously coveted car in future, simply because it is raw, closer to the 993 in its visceral nature than the latter water cooled cars.
It's great that you picked a car you love. Instead of just the newest supercar that might get more views.
This car is beautiful. Now you're officially a Porsche-addicted😂.
IF*
In my case its boring...no big wing,no big engine,no insane aero parts...:)
@@joe125ful I think this contributes to the character of the car... A modern GT3 Touring is also very reluctant in terms of looks.😅
But a wing would actually look very good on that!😁
@@Luca-hg7yp See how boring it is?I would make more agressive front and rear area add active front/rear wing and change engine to Flat 8 N/A with 9.000Rpm.
@@joe125ful Drive a Porsche and you'll understand that it transcends visual appeal.
@@skylerssupercarlife348
Maybe but you must agreed some parts need be changed.
These videos always get me going "Oh I bet I heard of this car." For once, with surprise and perhaps a bit of shame loving Porsches, I had not known this thing existed. Huh... It's a beauty though. I like it. Congratulations on the new 4 wheeled friend!
You and me both until about 6 months ago! Such a cool thing in my opinion
Cringe weeb
@@ezaf5989 You're cool.
The 996 facelift is such an underrated und beautiful car!! 😍

Great car pickup Sam and even better video. You are the most genuine youtuber on the platform, without even trying. Hoping you enjoy many miles.
Thanks dude. Means a lot
Ever since I saw the 996 in Gone in 60 Seconds, I’ve been in love with it. It was only in the movie for about 15 seconds but that scene was still so good, and it had that *perfect* Porsche sound.
and.........that wasn't a 996, it was an 1978 911 with 996 panels on the outside

Yess, such a good choice. Your content has turned me to the Porsche dark side as well, so excited to see this car on the channel!
Welcome aboard!
Keeping true to yourself yet again, Sam! I like that, keep it up. Studio is coming along nicely too. I feel an exciting time for STG ahead!
I want a meet up with yours and TGE’s 996 !
TGE will Love it ❤️
Matt Watson (Carwow) also has one of these
Yeah good to see guys like TGE finally realise that new cars are a waste of money. Now he has a great lineup of older cars.
@@richboy900 he does not have a 40th anni version. He has a 996.1 Carerra 4S.

Great call! Such un underrated car imo. Your genuine love for Porsche is why I like your channel. Sincerely hoping to be able to buy a Porsche one day 🤞 I wish you all the best memories, lots of safe miles and loads of fun with this beauty! Looking forward to all The Porsche content coming from your channel. Best wishes from The Netherlands
Congratulations Sam, the 40 Jahre is one of my favourite 996 variants!
Awesome, I was just looking at rare 996 911's last week and came across this! I think it will be a future classic!
I remember trying to persuade my wife (then girlfriend) that we should buy one of these about 8 years ago. 75,000 miles and under £15k for an actual 40th anniversary. We bought a Mercedes c180 instead... thankfully she has now come on board the car obsession and has had everything from a Lotus Elise to her current C43 AMG... still mentioned this to her though as soon as I started watching this video haha
Great review as always mate. Love the studio. You really have grown over the last couple of years and have become one of my top 5 channels!! Keep it going and thank you.
Beautiful car Sam .... I’d be excited also ....a modern classic Porsche and Ferrari your winning at life at the moment
Thanks dude!
yeah, over the course of the video i went from thinking its just a meh 996 to actually quite liking the look of it
Saw one on Collecting Cars IG and thought it looked like a great package! Well done, Sam!
Mate! So happy for you! Love a good 996, great content ahead Sam, as per usual.
Great purchase Sam...looking forward to the future content 👍
Awesome Sam, can't wait to see more of it!
Lots of content on the way
Looking forward to seeing you driving this on the channel. 👍🏼
You and me both!
Amazing!! Can't wait for the following videos!!
So good to have 911 back on your channel, it felt like something was missing without it! Cant wait for the upcoming content with this car
The more I get older the more I start to admire Porsches
Mwahahaha, everyone succumbs eventually
There’s a reason why 911’s are so common
STG: I want a 911 speedster
Mum: We have a 911 speedster at home

Love it and another great video as usual 😍
I for some reason stopped watching you for a while, but good god I am happy to have tuned back in. Awesome content atm, Sam!
Porsche and Ferrari. The more you learn about cars the more you start to appreciate this two brands 🔥
What a cool car! and the new HQ looks amazing 😎
Thanks! More on the studio coming soon
Congratulations on a great find!! Looking forward to a detailed video when the car is ready to drive.
Absolutely love the look of this, the most modern looking 996 I've seen I reckon! Cracking car to have on the channel too, better than the other brand new Porsche options you spoke of hehe
I get the biggest smile everytime I see a new upload 😄😄😄
the second i saw the colour i knew it was the 40 Jahre edition, i just adore the 996 generation
Hells yeh! Its a car for us Porsche nerds for sure ;)
@@seenthroughglass what about the... 996 turbo s? Is this 40th anniversary more special?
@@seenthroughglass does the car need the ring bearing replaced? Standard procedure for 996
Most people who adore the 996 generation are because it is just the one they can afford. Even Porsche has admitted they are not particularly proud of that model. There's a reason they quit fried eggs 15 years ago and have never been around since. 40 years anniversary model, lots of equipment for sure. If you put lipstick on a pig, it will still be a pig.
@@castroorstad8215 Is the very first GT3 a pig for you? Tell me...

Congratulations Sam, nice car! Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
Gotta love Sam’s fine taste for unpopular car choices 👌
Haha it gets me a hard time in group chats but see no point in buying cars I'm not interested in
welcome to the club sam. I have a 996 4S....Good time to buy as values are going up!
Right on!
Love this! This certainly is one of the 996's to have. I've been eyeing the 996 for a while, and everytime i see one I like them more and more... Congrats!
Congrats, Sam! Well done. :) Keep us posted. Can't wait!
Would be a dream to own a 40th anniv too!😍
Great pruchase! Never heard of that car tho.... and im from Stuttgart :D
Great Choice Sam! A definite favorite for those who know Porsche and true enthusiasts. I have always said the 996 never deserved the hate and I am happy to now see the turn around, love and recognition it is getting over the last few years. Enjoy and looking forward to future reviews!
Congrats on adding this special 996 in your collection (yes, now we can begin to call it that).
Keen to hear the detailed drive review and more comparisons with a regular 996 911 as well as comparing it with your previous 911 T so we can relate with a modern Porsche too.
Enjoy the drive Sam!
They are very underrated and unknown, one sits in my collection too. 🐐
Congrats, super excited by the car
Love it Sam!! Silver is the colour for 911s 😍
I love it!
You have the most relatable collection - it's not full of YTuber Flip-specials; it seems to contain cars you genuinely want to own and not just for the sake of a channel. I think that demonstrates you have a passion and interest for cars that outshines the other guys.
Pretty much the only CZcams channel I make sure I watch every video from, fantastic stuff
Love the fried egg! Excellent purchase and great investment Sam🤟
This is freaking awesome!! best channel on youtube :D
Wow, thanks!
What a great car, Sam. Perfect spec, amazing value for money, low mileage, great story, ... Can't wait to see you road tripping that one!
Great car Sam - Congrats !!
That’s bloody lovely
Cheers matey
Love the car.
You should try amd meet up with, That Nine Eleven Guy?
He's a Porsche nut!
I second this suggestion!
I’ve been looking at the 40th Anniversary 996 for sale for a few days online and then you bring out this video. Now I get why they’re special- love the paint!
Love the mods to the studio! Keep up the progress & we're looking forward to a studio update.
Great buy! My favorite (affordable) 996 is the 4s
Good choice! 4S might look a little better but I love the lightweight nature of the Carrera S/40th
Great car, but the driver's choice is Carrera 2. Less weight, better steering, as there's no driveshafts interfering with front wheels.
Unpopular opinion, the 996 is the best looking "modern" 911
I've owned a 996.2 Carrera 4 and imo they most definitely are the ugliest of all 911's..I prefer the look of the original 996 tbh...997 still the best looking Modern classic 911..
Congrats! I love that it's got that connoisseur factor, that to most people it's a 996, but it's got a bigger story as a 40th anniversary edition. It's one of the things I liked about my R8 GT, that same geek factor. Congrats again
this is some of the most underappreciated content on youtube. the production value is astronomical. congrats on the new car
can't wait for Tony to roast you on this...
Haha you can imagine the Whatsapp abuse i've already received
Legend has it, if you’re this early Sam will pin your comment!
Shut up
I bought this 40th anniversary 911 six months ago, still excited every time I drive it, it’s a beast. The IMS and the RMS we’re done, And I was wondering if you had yours done? Anyway happy for you and happy for me and I do believe the more exposure these cars get more valuable they will get so thanks for your video.
I find these sort of car purchases (and therefore car channels) so more more interesting than those who buy new stuff every five minues.
Love it! The exact content i personally want to see, people enjoying obtainable sports cars! Keep up the good work!!!
I love how you are changing my mind about the 996.
Sam, very few vloggers could have pulled this off, but on you, this car fits perfectly. A very nuanced acquisition that will prove its value over time. Here in the US, the 996 is coming into its own, with values rising steadily. I imagine the number of right hand drive models is very limited. I assume it has been repainted.
Loving the project cars content. Looking forward to the roadtrips next year. My favourite channel of the traditional car youtubers. 👍
Great buy Sam! Congratulations!
Perfect shape, perfect size. The 986 Boxster is in the same category ... forgotten gems!
Lovely car Sam - congrats! I really like that you buy cars with your heart. I was so close to buying a 996 last year but got scared that the car wouldn't feel special since where I live, every other car is a 911. I'll have to scratch the Porsche itch one day though.
Nice purchase Sam..look forward to seeing what you do with it 🚙
Always said your camera work and production are one of the best on CZcams and way ahead of any of the other car guys, way ahead of them.
Smart buy, I like that you’re pivoting away more and more from the new stuff. A mix of old and new is nice, there’s loads of your peers stuck in the “new supercar” vibe. The history stuff is an interesting piece weaved in.
Love the studio - I must confess I'm not a "fried egg fan" but you've convinced me the 40th anniversary is definitely the way to go and I love your insight almost as much as the luggage that goes with it ! Please be careful of that I beam. At 10:08 I nearly had kittens.... It would be a sad day indeed for the want of little subtle padding - if you hopped into your latest dream and put a new kink in the drivers door. Looking forward to your next VLOG.
God damn it Sam, I’ve been looking at 996’s safe in the knowledge that I wouldn’t be getting one. You’re gonna make me change my mind.
Congrats on the new car. So much love for this
Welcome to the 996 club sam. You nailed it... this is the last tossable 911. Light, compact and a thrill to drive. Eager to see how your journey will unfold. Cheers!
Sam you out-did yourself on the edit!! 🔥🔥 and awesome that you went for a niche modern classic !!
I am amazed at the quality of content. Congrats on the car!
That’s a proper 911. Well done Sam. Not only have you bought it but I know your gonna drive it !
Excellent video. You communicated well what most of us are looking for in a special car irrespective of brand or budget.
Love it, well done Sam, never heard of this model before but can see why you bought it, looks super tidy also 👏👏👏
Porsche 996 😍😍😍 i love your channel! More 90s and 00s cars please!!!
Beautiful car and great model choice. Superb opening montage and photography to another excellent video. Looking forward to the 911/996 upgrade story.
Great video Sam.
I was never a fan of the 996 ( I sort of stop at 993), but you have clearly really done your homework and found the 'biggest bang for your buck'. I would always look privately for this kind of thing, as you can find really enthusiastically owned vehicles with fantastic service histories.....and see them in their home environment which tells you a lot about a car.
It looks a really honest clean example.
The limited edition will stand you in good stead.
You remind me of myself at your age......boundless enthusiasm for vehicle research. stats, and historical model detail before purchase ...... long may it last Sam!
Sam, this is just absolutely brilliant!
love your passion for interesting car ownership. Spot on Sam.
I’m a huge porsche fan boy and embarrassingly never knew about these. Love it already! Congrats Sam
Well done Sam. I've started to have an appreciation for this generation 911. Now you got me wanting to see how many of these made their way to South Africa.
okay didn't see that coming. love that 40th version. well done sir. well done.
Love it, other than the headlights of this era I get this type of car a lot. Nice one Sam!
Good honest content Sam. Like it.
this is insane. congratulations sam!
Thank you!!
Amazing ! Beautiful Porsche Sam, congrats !!
Loving the ' all interesting car collection' in the making. Big thumbs up. I always found kind of boring acquiring the last supercar every other CZcamsr or footballer have.
