FIRST DRIVE In My 'Cheap' Porsche 911 [996 40th Anniversary]

- Two months after buying my Porsche 911 40th Anniversary, I finally got the chance to take it on a proper drive to see what it's actually like.
In late 2003, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its 911 model, Porsche introduced a highly optioned special-edition model limited to 1963 numbered copies, each bearing the anniversary slogan “40 Jahre” representing “40 Fast Years”. The “40 Jahre 911” is a normally-aspirated, rear-wheel drive, narrow-body Carrera with myriad of aesthetic and performance enhancements, including the vaunted X51 engine package, GT Silver exterior paint, natural grey full-leather interior, limited-slip differential, shot-blasted and polished 18” Carrera II lightweight wheels, turbo front bumper with painted air-inlets, aluminum-trim rings on the instrument cluster, and M030 suspension (in North America - ROW030, which was lower, outside North America). While many of the 40 Jahre 911 owners have left their cars unmodified, others have personalized them. The most common exterior modification by owners of North American 40 Jahre 911 cars was replacing the orange side markers (“pumpkins”) with clear markers like European 40 Jahre 911 cars. Others owners have added a fixed rear wing, blacked out the painted grill inlets, or changed or refinished the wheels (which often suffer corrosion in harsh weather environments). From a performance standpoint, one of the common misconceptions about the 40 Jahre 911 cars is that PSE (Porsche Sport Exhaust) was a factory available option. In reality, PSE was a dealer-installed option. In fact, the only available options from the factory were natural grey floormats, comfort seats with power package, rear window wiper, Bose high-end sound system, remote 6-disc CD changer, and Porsche Communications Management (navigation system - “PCM”), although buyers outside of North America could also choose two additional options: GT3 seats and telephone handset.

I love how you opened the window so we could see the bird.
That bird was not “Seen Through Glass”
...I’ll show myself out
Hahaha, well played
I think it was a Red Kite? Bird of prey prevalent around Berks and Oxfordshire.
It was a Buzzard, different tail feathers to a Red Kite

Ah, very cool :)
In the last 12 minutes, my 2021 has already improved considerably! Welcome back Sam!
Very kind of you to say! Lets get through this year together
Man your channel is so legit. Love your authentic content. So much better than others with 'exclusives' every other day. Wish you had more subscribers and views cos you really deserve it. Appreciate how you aren't afraid to be honest and criticise the big brands. Keep up the good work mate
I appreciate that! Thanks for tuning in
I really hope this year you finally get the views you deserve - was pretty shocked to see your 911R & 918 Video from NZ only got 100k views 🥲
Thanks! But as long as those who watch enjoy, then I'm happy! Still got to drive a 911R and 918.. ;)
This authenticity is what keeps me here.
It's kinda sad because Pauls channel is doing even worse , and the best stuff either of you did you did together .
@@OlderthanIlookyoungerthanIfeel well this channel is amazing, but Paul's channel.....let's say its too repetitive. The only new thing happened recently was the superbike thing. But I used to love SOL and the adventures together, and man, I miss them!!
Oh we've been waiting for this drive! So good to see you back Sam! I hope your creative break lived up to your expectations. Somehow I'm feel like I'm more excited for this year than ever before. So many new cars and adventures ahead. I can't wait what's in store, so bring it on Sam! I'm excited, let's do this!
Thanks for the continued support! Fingers crossed this year can be a mega one
Oh I missed your videos! But you got a well deserved break, and a belated Happy New Year!
Thank you! You too!
I've said it a million times but the 996 is such a underrated car, for the little amount of money they are it's one if the best cars, my dad has one and has been using it as a daily driver for 11 years, its only had one engine rebuild.. 😂
Haha only one?! Amazing, lol. Really pleasantly surprised by my experience so far. Excited for the road ahead
@@seenthroughglass excited to see your journey with it mate 👍
Agreed!
Welcome back, Sam! You're right, supercars do look good dirty. It shows they're being loved
Yes indeed!
this is what I'm here for. Love this content and really happy that you haven't let the maintenance ruin the car for you (at least on camera).
Welcome back Sam! Can't wait for all the videos to come 🤩
Thanks! More to come!
Great to see a Porsche 996 been talked about in a positive way and STG not afraid to drive it in winter. Looking forward to your vlogs in 2021.
What a perfect video to start off STG 2021. Beautiful car and awesome to see your own place for content coming along nicely. Looking forward to the plenty more videos to come.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Always Great content! love the 996 and yours is perfect 👌🏽 🙌🏽
Mate you have to keep it forever😍 shes a beauty. The 996 is so under-rated and its finally starting to get the love it deserves. Hopefully they creep up in value very soon
We shall see :)
I own a 996 C4, am honestly thinking of selling it as I moved location for a job and haven't driven it in 3 years. Just don't want to lose it though
I agree, other than hoping they creep up in value. I actually prefer they stay cheap so more people can experience it!
@@carsandchronos I'm not sure how many 996s are still about but maybe a lot so will be a while before that happens. But yeah more people need to experience them rather than jumped up golfs. But I still want modern classics to rise so they start to become out of reach to cowboys, bodgers and those that take them for granted
@@prits5976 there are a lot of other 911 models as well, but these 996 continue to be the outcast of the bunch. I don’t mind people hot rodding them and modifying them, it’s more fun than having them all sit pristine in someone’s garage.
Perfect timing.. That was a very enjoyable bit of lunchtime viewing! All the best to you and STG this year!
We're glad that you're back. All the best for 2021!
Proper Porsche motoring and enjoyment. Proves you don't need the latest new thing out of the factory for some fun driving and ownership pleasure.
Love the energy, thank you Sam!
Yeah Sam! I watch a lot of different content on CZcams, from movie reviews to personal finance stuff to car content, and when you take a bit of time off every year on Christmas, you're the only one that I can't wait for the videos to start again! Happy New Year and I'm happy to finally see the Porsche on the roads!
I can appreciate why you've bought this beautiful car now that you've made a video on it. Such a fantastic two car garage!
Awestome content as always Sam! Studio looks so cool, the vibe is perfect especially alongside a 996 40 Jahre
You have the best channel Sam and I love modern classics the most, especially manuals. Currently you are the only CZcamsr providing that content and I hope you keep doing so.
Happy 2021!
Great video to start the year ! 996s are so cool ! Watched every single ad to the end, hoping it can help you for the new project of 2021 😊
Been waiting for this video. HNY Sam. Great video as always!
Glad you enjoyed it!
As always the best quality content on CZcams and tells that we have the same taste in cars! Keep up the good work and all the best for 2021!
Wishing you well and looking forward to this year's content
The video we’ve all been waiting for 😭🙌🏻
The video I've been waiting to film! Ha
I love 996, I've had 996 4S and 996 carrera cabriolet, still want one....
Fantastic video Sam. As a 996 c4s owner myself i cant wait to see the modifications you will be doing and the journey your car will take. LOVE IT......
Sam, I always really enjoy your shoots and the way you express yourself 👍
Nice you are a down to earth chap and help to make these COVID times more enjoyable 🙏
Get yourself a 997.2 4S with manual transmission , install the X51 power upgrade and you will have all the nimble little 911 you will ever need. I love your humble simple videos. Keep up the good work! Best Jeppe
Glad to see you back! Feels like its been longer than it has since the last video. Hope to see more on the 996 too
Great video and very informative - keep up the good work!
I love this car, the modern classics are underrated in my opinion...
Looks like you had fun! Love seeing the constant evolution of the STG HQ!!
Happy new year sam ! Still binge listening to your podcasts
Was catching up on some BTG over the break so it’s like you’ve not gone away. Great to see you back and great to see the 996 too.
Fantastic video Sam and a lovely car too.
The smiles speak in volume....hope you enjoy many more 911 miles mate !!
Happy new year mate, keep up the great work!
I am in the USA and trust me this was a well needed way to restart 2021and bring back some normalcy...... thanks!
Great editing and filming ! Christmas did you good and ready for 2021 !!
Bloody hell, steamy breath downstairs in the studio 😮 must be super cold! Love this car and looking forward to all of the great content in 2021! You definitely helped get me through 2020 🙏
Haha, I think I actually got sick filming down there! But worth it! Thanks for the kind words
Nice one Sam great
video as always. I have a 996 C4S in midnight blue with blue leather grate car very fun drive keep up good work happy new year
Nice one! Thanks for watching and congrats on what sounds like a great car
Great video! I am always on the hunt for an 40 Anniversary here in the States. Thanks for making good videos.
It’s great to see you kicking off 2021 with the 996 Sam! I have owned a Basalt Black 996 4’S’ for 4 years which replaced by previous 996.2 Carrera at that time. I also have a Polar Silver 996 Turbo and I love them both dearly - the 996 has been underrated for far too long and it’s fantastic that the likes of yourself and Tom are now flying the flag for them! I use an early 986 Boxster ‘S’ as my daily driver and they’re a great little package as well!
Much praises and kudos to you Sam. People fail to realize how involving CZcams is. Im glad you took a break and i hope you're well rested.
Well done! I’m so happy you enjoyed the first real drive! -996revival 🙌🏼
Great video Sam. Super lucky to have got my first 911 in November, a 997 C4S, so am really looking forward to following your experiences as I do the same with mine. Love the channel.
Great video Sam. I’ve never really liked the 996 but over the last 6 months they’ve started to grow on me. I think they’re ageing well
Thanks for renewing channel posts, and enjoy you Porsche. Many of us cannot tell one from the other.
Welcome back and happy 2021, Sam!
Welcome back Sam! You can’t go wrong starting the year off in a Porsche...even if other cars do have more character/catch on fire! 😃
You’ve given me a new appreciation for the 996. Saw a Carrera 4S yesterday and thought it looked great!
Great video, may 2021 be full of amazing roads and moments 😊👍⛽🛢
Glad to have you back missed you over the holidays. Looking forward to the year ahead. Remember Scotland has some fabulous roads when lockdown is over.
Actually saw you filming this episode and hoped that the 911 would be returning to our screens 👍🏻 Keep up the great work and loving the 911 Sam, glad you enjoyed the 996 i’ve always thought they were a great drive and offer more character and driver feedback than later Porsche products. 😎
Nice one Sam. So much in this vid I agree with, particularly re the 'perfection' of the modern Porsches. Character is so important to the enjoyment of a car!
Changed up the edit style a bit!
WoW! Nice video! Nice car!
Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Glad you noticed ;)
Missed ur cinematography and editing through Christmas
Good to have u back!
The Porsche bug is real, got my first one a couple of months ago and I can't get enough of that flat 6 sound!
Love the channel. Always love the 40 Jahre cars. I've got a 99 myself, not quite the same but still excellent value for money.
Finally back! Hope you are well rested and ready to entertain us all.
Excited for the great comeback 🥳
As an owner of a 16 year old AMG 55 sports-car, I’m loving the STG journey with your new ‘Classic’ 911. As you said at the beginning of the video, the few imperfections with these older cars become endearing characteristics over time. As for the sound of a naturally aspirated engine over a turbo, the non turbo engine is top for for aural pleasure.
Nice one Sam, makes me miss my 996 C4S that I sold around a year and a half ago. You will always have things to renew when buying an older Porsche but you now know exactly where you are with yours now, enjoy !
Welcome back Sam, enjoyed the in car camera angle..
I used to watch all the British CZcams guys but Sams videos are the only ones I care to watch. Cheers to STG🎉
Glad they sorted your car whilst they've had my Cayman S since July and they can't sort out faulty H&R springs. Guess you're more important !
July!!! wtf???? why would you leave it there that long for Springs?
@@germancarfan360 They are in dispute with Design911 who are in dispute with H&R. No one will admit it's their fault. We've replaced the rear shocks and it's still the same. So it drags on. Weeks turn into months and before long it's 7 months later.
so so glad to see you back! Not at all a Porsche person but you make every video enjoyable and informative. Keep it up Sam.
Appreciate that. Thanks for tuning in
I had one of these for 5 years. Very underrated car that still surprises a lot of people today.
The description is really interesting, thanks for adding that tid bit
Happy New Year Sam. Bloody hot out here finally
Good afternoon Sam! Happy New Year!
The 911 is looking great, let hope you can get out and do a road trip with it. Looking forward to seeing all the fantastic content to come this year.
Thanks buddy! Happy New Year to you too. Fingers crossed for some fun adventures in the 911
@@seenthroughglass Cool! Fingers crossed! 🤞🏻
Nice to see you back 😃
Lovely car, good to see more great content!
Nice to see you back Sam, looking forward to your upcoming content:) hope you had a nice Christmas and break from CZcams and Instagram
I like it Sam. thanks for the content
Thanks for watching!
Now this is nice on a Sunday with some warm cinnamon swirls! Happy new year, Sam!
Happy new year!
Happy New Year Sam.
Nice to see a new video.
Never been a huge 911 fan but they are fun to drive though.
Would consider a 993 or 964 though.
Those are my favorite 911s.
Nice video though.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks matey. Happy New Year to you too!
Bought my 996 10+ years ago for dirt cheap with only 26k miles. I have picked up a 997 as well, with the intent to sell the 996. Couldn't do it, so I am keeping it and enjoying it!
Another cool video 👍
Glad to see you took my advice and went for the Dansk Sports Exhaust upgrade..Enjoy..
Happy New Year Sam.......Good to see the Porsche on the road...Nice...Ha !!
Same to you!
Longer videos Sam! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Love these modern classic videos rather than the unobtainium stuff !
And i absolutely love the studio!
Keep up the great stuff with the Podcast!
Woo Sam is back.
Here's to a better new year.
Looking forward to seeing all the new content this year 👍🏻
Ha good to be back! Fingers crossed 2021 isn't a total disaster
@@seenthroughglass why is it that reading Porsche models is like reading binary code 😂😂 9's and 1's
I believe the Germans have word for that driving pleasure, "Fahrvergnügen", right? I love my 996 C2!
This has me reminiscing about my silver 996 C4S - such a fun car!
Awesome, been waiting for this one
Hope you enjoy
These cars are brilliant, enjoy it! I love my 2001 C2 Manual. Updated with a 997 engine, full Supersprint exhaust and yellow Koni's with H&R springs it drives and sounds like a dream!
Your Content is so amazing. I think we are about the same age and therefore i adore your current Garage. The 360 and the 996 are amazing cars from my childhood and they were and they still are such great looking Cars.
I love the fact that you‘re aware of what real driver cars are and not repeating the same shit the others say about literally every new car they get paied for showing on their Channel. There is so much thoughts in your Videos, simply love it.
Would love to even See much More vids 😊, cheers from germany
I had to do a covid cabin fever drive in my 911 today. Bought new last January and just turned 2100 miles. A fair weather creature.
Sweet car...I recently purchased a 997.1, it was best handing car I have ever driven. Amazing responsiveness and feel, especially with the manual gearbox. Nice video.
When you said it’s cold in STG HQ - you weren’t lying! At 2:10, you can see your breath 😂
I had one just like it but just didn’t get the opportunity drive it plus around Croydon the roads are shocking. I had a ceramic bearing installed on the troublesome IMS by Parr when the clutch needed doing. Expensive job but worth the peace of mind. Any trip to Parr seemed to be £2k, but they’re a great independent. Nice car and turbine smooth. I did I 13,000 miles including to Scotland which was superb. You’re right, a small car and seemed to dance over the lumps and bumps of narrow roads. Never out of shape and never missed 4WD of the 4S. Enjoy what is a really superb car with a fantastic blend of everyday and truly special.
I just see your yellow Hat and Jacket and think `What would Lenny say`!!!! nice motor Sam!
Great video. As the owner of 40 AE # 1383, I am watching this series with great interest. I know you have bigger and better plans and see this as a stop gap car for maybe the next 18 months. However, it would not surprise me if you find it quite difficult to let this one go once you really start to drive and enjoy it. The newer GT cars are truly amazing, but almost too amazing and too fast to really enjoy on real roads. The 996 you have now strikes a perfect balance of speed and usability. Looking forward to the next video!
I love my 996! Awesome video!
I can understand why :)
