    I wrestled a total of three times. I was told that the best type of gimmick is where you take an aspect of your personality and life and blow it up to 10. I tried a heel atheist gimmick, nearly got stabbed, and decided that was enough for me. Oh, and it was in rural Texas... so I should have known better.

    A couple years ago, I met this one dude who was a local indy wrestler. His whole gimmick was a ripoff of Spike Dudley, but in his words "he was making it his own." However, he never specified how he made the gimmick his own. So I finally see his match at a show and low and behold, he copied every aspect of Spike Dudley's gimmick: the ring gear, the facial expressions, the moves, the whole spazzy hand waving. Dude was a trash bag wrestler straight to a T.

      @EGTitusPlays Před 9 lety +18

      +Lee Marion I understand that point and I almost said it myself. The problem is the military gimmick has been played out so much, and in particular by non-military people. It would actually be better to due a military gimmick with custom gear instead of standard issue type gear. That j would 100% stand behind.

      @danger170388 Před 9 lety +2

      I have a buddy who is a vet and wrestles now with a Military gimmick. He actually wears some of his old Army gear, with some custom stuff mixed in and camo face paint

    • @stalectos
      @stalectos Před 9 lety +2

      +Titus Machiavelli i could see an army gimmick working if someone came down to the ring not necessarily in actual combat gear but something that looks like what people think special forces look like if that makes any sense. they should never wrestle in it of course (except maybe some elbow and knee pads) but if you can capture the feel of for instance a rainbow six operative (fictional organization from series of novels and video games) it should get across the idea that "yes this is an overused gimmick but i bet you haven't seen someone put this much effort into it".
      also as far as promos and the like are concerned might be better for the character to act like a mercenary type person so they have an excuse to change sides at pretty much any time and so they don't get stuck being a john cena type character (nothing wrong with that im a fan of cena personally but 1 cena is enough cenas and according to some people 1 cena is too many).

    Nearly every performer who doesn't wear ring gear has worn ring gear at some point, and that's probably the point that the trash bag wrestlers don't get. Even Raven, my favorite wrestler of all time had to wear ring gear as Scotty Flamingo before he was able to wear a Dinosaur Jr. T-Shirt and torn up jhorts to the ring as Raven. Its the same with Foley.

    • @Redrally
      @Redrally Před 8 lety +21

      +Joelsuf You are very much correct. Even the Hardy Boyz started out wearing colourful tights, that were inspired by the 80s wrestlers of their youth. The only reason they switched to the Hot Topic gear in the first place was that the WWF wanted them to "go darker" to match the tone of the Attitude Era.
      When they were on Talk is Jericho, Matt did declare that their Hot Topic gear was the worst thing for Indy wrestlers, who suddenly realised they did not need to invest in proper wrestling gear. No doubt seeing a lot of the ECW roster helped with this 'newfound' belief.

      aiooty19 near the end of his RoH run he was already wearing the gear he wore during his wwe time, as far as his earlier look, I'd still consider it proper ring gear since I consider the shorts he wore for the longest time to be similar to what the Uso's wore up until their heel turn a few years back.

    I totally agree with your comments!!! This not only applies to wrestling but in all walks of life. One thing that makes for an exciting indie promotion is when they don't try to promote themselves as a "poor man's WWE", but as the "best kept secret" in wrestling. The same goes for the wrestlers themselves. The ones who get discovered by the big leagues are the ones who had already developed a fanbase for themselves in the "bush leagues". When fans come to see a wrestler, not because he reminds them of a more famous WWE wrestler, but on their own terms, that wrestler has a chance of truly making it. A great example of this is a wrestler known as "Craazy Steve". For years fans have turned out to see him in seedy little warehouses, convention centers and auditoriums because of his style, athletic ability and memorable character. The ultimate payoff for this has been his signing to the TNA roster. Who knows, perhaps fans might see him in the WWE one day. All this is due to him making his own mark on the industry and not trying to live off the coat-tails of someone else.

    You should do some research into the British scene of the 90s and early 2000s. There were ‘UK’ versions of every American wrestlers gimmick. There was a UK Undertaker, a “Big Red Machine” etc. They would be billed as “UNDERTAKER” on the posters with ‘uk’ in tiny writing above it. I’m shocked no one ever got sued.

    This video has a huge significance in my book because it was the very first Wrestling With Wregret video I had seen. I remember watching it for the first time a few years ago and I was instantly a fan and have been a Wrestling With Wregret subscriber ever since. I still find myself coming back and watching this video every couple of months, as well as watching most of Brian's top 8 videos multiple times. Keep up the awesome content Mr. Zane, I look forward to new Wrestling With Wregret videos, and this channel is one of the very few CZcams channels I'm subbed to where I have actually left the notification bell turned on so that I know when you posted a new video. I dig the fact that you haven't pidgeon holed yourself to one type of video, but instead you have multiple formats for your videos. My favorite type of video you do are your top 8 countdown videos, but I also like your videos about a single topic. (WWE NWO, Tazz, DDP, Raven in WWE, etc.) Your Wrestling movie reviews are pretty fucking funny as well, especially the "Ready to Rumble" review, and that huge steaming pile of shit that was that "Jesse Ventura story" abomination. Your nostalgic Pay Per View reviews are awesome too. Even your "Who War it better" videos are better than most Wrestling channel videos are better than 90% of other CZcams Wrestling channel videos, and the "Who War it better" videos are my least favorite Wrestling With Wregret videos. Anyway, keep up the awesome content Mr. Zane, I'm a huge fan and always look forward to seeing new Wrestling With Wregret videos when I open CZcams.

    One of the things about TBW that bothers me is that wrestling gear, especially custom gear, is incredibly expensive. And many of the wrestlers on the page seem to be around the Apalacian mountains, one of the poorest regions of the United States.

      Earlier on, they were more lenient towards people that used compression shorts/basic basketball shorts, but now they just kinda upload pictures regardless of context and don't even bother to address it when it turns out the person in the picture actually is a legit worker.

      Mine was a combo of Dean Ambrose and John cena with khaki shorts and a black muscle shirt but then I changed it up and made my character a member of bullet club because I'm a big BC mark wearing black tights with the bullet club logo on each leg and the logo on my boots and I only changed the attire when I was in a no holds barred match because I made it like a street fight and had my character fight in jeans and the bullet club bone soldier shirt, but my character has brown short curly hair, a stubble brown beard, and green eyes, finishers are the RKO because you can't go wrong with it, and a cross face, then signatures were either the five star frog splash as a tribute to Eddie Guerrero because he was the best and rob van dam because I'm also a battle creek area person, and I used the vertebreaker too.

    Personally, I think there are certain gimmicks where it makes sense to wear street clothes or other nontraditional gear, but you should at least have a well thought out, specific reason for choosing whatever it is you're going to wear and how you present yourself. I will also add that IMHO the gimmicks where it makes sense to do that are grossly over saturated at this point, so you should probably go with something else.

    I agree with everything you said. However, I have seen those Facebook pages post pictures of guys that were really good wrestlers, had been in the business for quite a while, get booked all over, were respected, and knew how to get responses from all types of crowds, yet whoever was taking pics that day for the website decided their choice in gear for that one show was terrible. So they got labeled on Facebook. Most of them on that page are trashbag wrestlers, though. But on occasion, they just catch someone in a compromising, one time position.

I can't tell you how often I have seen/heard about guys who try and wrestle with no tights or boots, then try and say, "Well Cena doesn't wear tights!" OK, well are you John Cena? I think that anyone who starts out in wrestling should get legitimate gear, just to be on the safe side, then if the opportunity presents itself, then maybe think about wrestling in "civvies."

    • @Kaltagstar96
      @Kaltagstar96 Před 9 lety +2

      Wrestling With Wregret That's true. It's not like they wouldn't know where to get them. I've seen some kick-ass motorcross pants that would make awesome looking tights for example. I'm not going to lie I'm more concerned by how out of shape some of the dudes are from seeing this and the music video. It could be a good way to get heel heat though, someone's an actual good wrestler but has a 'trashbagger' gimmick just to work the fans.

      Wrestling With Wregret John Cena actually owns about one hundred pairs of tights dating back to his Protoype days with a large number of boots. I'd say for him to spend the money he did on ring gear then was given the opportunity to wrestle in jean shorts and sneakers, he's earned it.

    I've always had an idea of a gimmick where the guy is basically offering everyone a devil's deal. He can get them whatever they want if they give him something in return, or do this one little favor for him later. The thing is what he ends up asking for might end up being something the other guy holds very close to them. Like if Bray Wyatt wants a WWE title shot he will get it, and after the match, regardless if he wins or loses, he loses Sister Abigail. But if you read the contract in full and read it very carefully then maybe all you have to do is open a door for him. And if you try to screw him...he'll tare your soul apart! Any wrestlers or managers with a gimmick like this? could this work? Is this an original idea, or am I unknowingly ripping someone off?
