- It’s no secret that we are headed toward a presidential election that many Americans said they didn’t want. Somewhere in the range of 20 percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of both former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, and if ratings are any indication, a lot of folks seem to be tuning campaign news out.
So what does this portend for turnout? We’ve been in an era of high-turnout elections since 2016, but will fatigue or disdain keep people home this fall? In this installment of the 538 Politics podcast, the crew debates what kind of turnout we should expect and why it matters. They also discuss why Biden and Trump decided to go forward with two earlier-than-usual debates.

I have listened in podcast form, but I’m constantly on CZcams so I prefer to do it there. I do not check out my podcasts nearly as often as I check CZcams.
The sad part is that they dont ever address the video not being on YT nor do they discuss the complete removal from YT prior to this video for the past several weeks.
Yeah I would have expected Galen to at least preface an episode with a quick mention of wtf has been going on. It’s an election year for gods sake!

I know how I'm going to vote. I can't imagine how I'd change anyone's mind, and I can't imagine any opposing argument that would change mine.
The status quo seems set in stone, and to the extent that people screaming on Twitter is changing anything at all, it certainly doesn't seem to require my involvement. There are already more than enough internet warriors.
Any time and attention spent on politics just seems like a massive opportunity cost for no reward.

Yes, Americans are very much tuning out the 2024 election. The two candidates are so starkly different, I can't imagine the kind of person that could bounce between them. Whoever you voted for last time is very likely who you'll vote for this time. There is no campaign promise Trump can make that will allow me to forget Jan. 6th. And if you forgave Trump for Jan. 6th, then you'll be just as brainwashed today as you were four years ago. There is no horse race this time around. The only variable in all of this is those that are so stupid that they'd put inflation concerns over democracy.
1/6 had nothing to do with Trump, it was a small riot, big deal.

At this point let's just be thankful that we still have long form podcast. This apparently has a very niche audience and is a money losing product for their parent company.
Does anyone have recommendation for other high quality podcast about politics / elections / statistics ?

There are tons of good right leaning ones. Not too many left leaning ones, i enjoy listening to both sides so its a bummer 538 is basically irrelevant now. @@Durnrhaegar

I’m glad the full episodes are finally back on CZcams, but it’s a pretty bizarre choice to downgrade the production value of this podcast in an election year by eliminating video 🙄🤷♂️
I feel like they fired whoever made the videos and they made a huuuge mistake.
Obviously, we will need a comparative analysis of the previous repeat major candidates. I took a quick look and there are quite a few examples, although none since the 1950s, which means that new calculations(?) for all of the data analysis and correlations.
Don't need 4 years as a lead-up. One month would be enough. All the time consuming means there are too many humans without any more productive activities but glorified gossip. Hu-mans are soo simple.
Please bring back the full length episodes! No need to add video.
Most youtubers will post the podcast and then either post highlights as shorts or separate the topics into their own videos of variable size
Regarding the MOE vs MOTE,
I'm not a fan of ppl creating a metric and then saying there's error they can't account for.
Just show me the error you can account for and that's what the 538 polling averages are for.
What you should do is take 538 polling average and blend it with some robust economic/sentiment indicators to better account for systematic error.

Just because the system is broken doesn't change the fact that he does have double digit polling numbers
@@GTA5Player1 most trusted pollsters, yougov and siena college, have him below 5%. it's only the right-wing pollsters like harrisx and activote that have him still at double digits, and it's obvious why.

Though, I do wonder if presidential debates truly affect the election nowadays. I read somewhere that they don't change polls (even if they are people undecided). Perhaps what I read was bogus, though. What do you think?
@@cadethumann8605 538 did a podcast episode on it a while back (I think it was after the 2nd presidential debate in 2020) and the general consensus of the data was that the impact was small. However, the data did show that large gaffs during a debate *could hurt* a candidate.
@@funtechu Large gaffs? What does that mean? I never heard of them before. And what do you mean by hurting a candidate without it affecting the polls very much? Forgive my ignorance (I don't keep up with politics for mental health reasons. Lately, however, this election is driving me anxious). I just need clarification.

What is the Margin of Error?
The margin of error (MOE) for a survey tells you how near you can expect the survey results to be to the correct population value. @@CB38096 If true, and in good faith,more power to you. My comment is in good faith. I've been a Dem since 1973, will vote Trump, but it will only be symbolic, as California will go 60%+ for Biden.
California has an almost 80 billion dollar deficient, the Los Angeles school district defunded the police by 50% and campus crime went up 200%. My city just spent millions on an LGBTQ+ parade while I had to call about a tent encampment across the street at a park being used by that very same parade. Priorities are upside down when vandalism of two towers in Los Angeles is reported by the media as an Art Installation.
