When I was in seminary in 10th grade we were learning about the Old Testament and every other verse talked about circumcision. Everyone seemed to know what it was, so I was afraid to ask, but then I thought, "there's no such thing as a stupid question." So I raised my hand and asked the seminary teacher, "What is circumcision?" There was a dead silence. The teacher turned bright red. The class, full of the varsity football team, broke into sniggers. One of the guys chortled, "Go ask your mommy!" Then the teacher ignored my question and went on with the lesson. Well, with a reaction like that, there was no way I was going to ask a living person. So I looked it up in the dictionary. (Before Google.) The dictionary said, "The cutting of the foreskin." So I looked up "foreskin". And that's when I realized two things: I could never go back to seminary, and there is such thing as a stupid question.
The teacher should have answered and then gave the example of Genesis 17:11 where the mutilation of the foreskin is a covenant with God and Abraham's descendants.
Isn't it weird that an all powerful god demands self mutilation, blood, and sacrifice. Even Jesus, himself, said he came to fulfill the law, not to abolish it. He isn't the only human sacrifice though, just the most important. Like the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite(Judges 11), which is still commemorated.
