- Often I am fortunate enough to receive questions from readers and viewers of The Fine Young Gentleman (so if you have any, feel free to let me know in the comments). A question that I have received in various forms a number of times is 'can you wear brown shoes with navy or gray pants?'.
The short answer is yes, but you likely didn't come here for the short answer. To learn a bit more about how to wear brown shoes with navy and gray pants and why they work so well together, please watch the video. As always, if you have any questions or would like to share your own thoughts, please do so in the comments. Thank you for watching.

This was a very good video. I bought my first pair of warm light tan (Italian made) oxford wingtips. They are much like the Allen Edmonds shoe on the far right of the screen, but maybe a tad lighter. They are almost too light, too warm/contrast-y for dark blue jeans and dark olive jeans...and black jeans. I was feeling kind of let down as all the pants I thought would work with them.....really....did NOT. But they seem to work better with khaki pants, medium washed jeans, and mid to light gray pants. If they were put with a full dark navy suit, they would work for some reason. But with dark navy jeans and other dark cool pants, they bring too much pop; they are simply too light and too warm against those dark cooler colored pants. I may not be totally correct, but that's my impression so far. I can understand people being a bit wary of the light brown shoe. Thank you for the video.
Great video!
I wear brown to court about 80% of the time. I used to wear black 100% of the time. I looked around the courtroom this morning and noticed an even split between black and brown. Right around 50% of the attorneys were wearing brown shoes.
20 years ago when I first started practicing law I don't think many attorneys wore brown at all.
I'm definitely used to the unspoken "no brown in town" rule I grew up with, but was just given a nice pair of brown wingtip shoes so this helps cause I don't intend to leave them in the closet
Great video and nice info. You should do some more. But i side with the guy who submitted the question. The Traditionalist will always go with the black shoes and grey or blue pants. It says something about your character when you uphold traditions that were handed down to us, even in style.
Many fashion traditions were and are pointless.
Where can I buy TM Stock ties?
Which of these 6 browns is most universal?
In matching shoes to the pants the shoes should match the belt too I think
Yes
For those light shades of brown on the left, whats the rule in the belt ? exact color ? feel like its very difficult to find matching belts
Exact if you can get it. Buy a whiskey brown dark brown and a light tan dublin belt for them
Decidedly not with blue.
