I remember reading The Big Toe in 6th grade on a field trip to some hills near San Fransisco. Our teacher read it and I stayed awake throughout the whole night. The movie does well to capture and present that same feeling you get when you read the book. I have to say, I think the Pale Lady might have been the best kill Pain-wise. Didn't seem like Chuck experienced any pain. Just fear and probably confusion as he was hugged.

This movie is basically a better version of the Goosebumps movie. I'm an unapologetic Goosebumps fanboy myself and while the Goosebumps movie wasn't bad nor terrible, it had some funny moments, it wasn't boring and was self aware of how silly the books can be. But it wasn't the Goosebumps movie that _I_ wanted to see, it didn't even _try_ to be a horror film. If I was to make adaptations of the books, depending on the story, I would give it a similar tone and quality to The Haunting Hour: The Series. I enjoyed this film, it wasn't super amazing or anything, but I enjoyed it. It pulled off some creepy imagery with the Pale Lady scene and had a brutal, onscreen death scene that cleverly gets around blood and gore for a PG-13 movie with the Harold scene. It may not be the same as Harold skinning someone alive like in the book, but turning into a scarecrow from the inside out with straw pouring through your skin and mouth is just as fucked up and brutal!

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was one of my favorite things growing up.
When I was a kid I got into trouble a LOT. And I spent a lot of time in the corner for it. Hours on end.
And one time while I was in the corner I heard my mom reading to my little brother. It was the story of the girl with the ribbon around her neck.
I'll skip to the end, her head falls off when she took the ribbon off her head fell off of her body.
I had dreams about this girl. Vivid dreams.

I really am impressed by the attention to detail that Guillermo Del Toro gave the Stephen Gammell drawings. I recall being disturbed by those same images as a child, but at the same time, it was difficult to look away. I always felt there was something reminiscent of Lovecraft in those charcoal sketches; a horror of something beyond comprehension, of a thing that aught not have been. Something that was never meant to manifest in our reality. As Del Toro has stated before he was a great fan of Lovecraft's work, so I imagine he must have had a similar view of Gammell's work.

    14:33 "The Hearse Song"
Don't ever laugh as a hearse goes by
For you may be the next to die
They wrap you up in big white sheet
From your hair down to your feet
They put you in a pinewood box
And cover you up with dirt and rocks
It all goes well for about a week
And then your coffin begins to leak
And the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out
The worms play pinochle on your snout
They eat your eyes, they eat your nose
    As you begin to decompose
A slimy beetle with demon's eyes
Chews through your stomach and out your sides
Your stomach turns to rancid grease
And puss pours out like melted cheese
You spread it on a slice of bread
And that's what you'll eat when you're dead
And the worms crawl out, the worms crawl in
The ones that crawl in are lean and thin
The ones that crawl out are fat and stout
Your eyes fall in and your hair falls out
Your brain turns into maggot pie
    Your liver starts to liquify
And for the living, all is well
As you sink further into hell
And the flames rise up to drag you down
Into the fire where you will drown
Your skin melts off as you descend
And Satan tears you limb from limb
    Your suffering will never end
And the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out
They'll eat your guts and then shit them out
And when your bones begin to rot
The worms remain, but you do not
So don't ever laugh as a hearse goes by
For someday, you'll be the one to die
And when Death brings his cold despair
    Ask yourself, "Will anyone care?"

it's weird because it was so creepy buy in most of the stories the fear was a diversion, or everything turns out okay in the end and people don't die in them, they just get scared. But in the movie they all die except a few people. Like the books it was all suspense and they escape the danger, like the woman being followed by a man flashing his headlights but then she learns he was just keeping the murderer in her back seat from killing her, or stories where someone meets or sees a ghost and gets scared but then the ghost leaves and nothing happens, it was like just scary enough without being too violent or depressing for younger kids. The spider one was accurate but in the book the story ends right there, the spiders hatch from a girl's face, the end. So you don't find out if she died, went crazy, was totally fine and just mildly grossed out, nothing.

@@A_Film21 It's too intense to be a 12a, five year olds shouldn't be seeing this. The US have G, PG, PG-13 and R. They don't have one betwen the higher two, like we have 15 between 12 and 18. It's annoying, I know, but the system we have over here, in the UK, works.

Notice how all the main characters who presumably died didn’t get stabbed, dismembered, melted, disintegrated, or burnt. They either got pulled into something or just transformed into a scarecrow. Not all horror movies and shows need gore to be scary.
