  • I demonstrate how to get a Case 580K into travel mode. (Transport Lock/Boom Lock) Simply pulling the boom up will not lock it in. There is a trick to it!

    I found this method a few days ago on a heavy equipment forum. I just acquired a 580 Super E for some projects around the property. Here's what I discovered: First, this works and is the correct way to get the machine in travel mode. The yoke on my 580 SE is a little different than this, but the same method applies. Here's what happens: You bring the boom back toward the machine to within about 3 inches from the locking pin. Then pull back on the control, then slam the control forward and the yoke slips right over the pin. Done. What no one is saying is that when you do that, the controls actually go into reverse operation. Suddenly out is in and in is out. When you want to release the boom for digging you have to push the control forward, lift the yoke then pull the control back to lower the boom. It's all backward! Once you release the control lever the machine goes back into normal mode where pushing the lever lowers the boom and pulling the lever raises the boom. You think I'm crazy? Try it and prove me wrong. Happy digging!

    Heck yeah. I had assumed exactly that... that the hydraulics weren't functioning 100% to return the boom to lock position. Then assumed you had to "whip" it into position. Then found this video with this awesome trick. Took me about 6 tries before I nailed it. Made my day! - Case 580 Super M

    Thanks for the video! we have a 580D and my go to method has been driving so i was parked at a decent incline to assist the boom coming towards the cab. the other day I was doing just that and noticed once it was in as far as i could get it releasing the pressure allowed it to come back the rest of the way and lock in. thanks for the tip!

    Great video! On my 580 B I extend the boom out when putting in to travel mode. The extra momentum from the added weight ( fulcrum ) snaps it right in place.

    If you extend the arm all the way out straight up into the air it moves the center of gravity further back on the arm and is even easier to get it back into the locking dowl or triangle thing.

    Been running case Backhoes for years, and you can always tell people that don’t know how to lock the boom into travel mode! It is a nice feature because it puts weight on the front end and makes it more stable driving down the road unlike other machines that get a little wobbly at any kind of speed!😎

  • @johnbaum9836
    @johnbaum9836 Před 9 měsíci

    It's a whole lot easier to do if you extend the dipper and bucket up high. It changes the center of gravity and lets it to coast towards the cab at the end of the boom's upswing much easier. Try it and let me know.

    I have a Case 580K and mine is a 2 stick, (4 if you count the 2 for the stabilizers.) also mine doesn’t have any foot pedals, it’s just got foot rests.
    One problem that I have that you may be able to help me with is, swinging from left to right, right to left. If my boom is all the way to the left, I can swing all the way to the right with no problem. Once I go to swing left, it will swing back to center, stops, like it is hanging up on something, then with a couple tries with the stick it will then swing left with no problem.
    Once you get past the catch spot, it works well.
    There’s supposed to have a hole in the center for a pin to keep it from moving side to side when in travel mode.
    That pin looks to be broken off in the hole.
    I first thought that it may be the pins and bushings, there’s some play, but the play is very little.
    Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
    Keep up the good work and keep making videos, because I’m following your steps by fixing one problem at a time.

    I bought a 1966 ck case 530 180 Diesel Backhoe and the best thing ever that I did for the Backhoe was I got a 6- month service plan threw case the come out to the farm every 6- months and service the Backhoe change all of the fluids and filters and Greece all of the fittings and anything else that needs service. so my job on the Backhoe is keeping it fueled up and check the fluids and operate.the Backhoe. I rather pay someone else because that way I can be doing another job some place else.

    Hey man just to add, if you hold your bucket lever in at the same time or just before you push out the boom lever it will do it a lot smoother, with a bit of practice, it loads the system just enough to make it not slam back too fast.

    • @johnteelsexcavatingjohnnys7095
      @johnteelsexcavatingjohnnys7095 Před 4 lety

      Indy Farm Life , took me a bit to figure that out but when you get it you will always do it without thinking. I learned to operate backhoe on a 2 stick ford 555, my dad used in his business, when I learned to use a 4 stick I was working for a paving company. I actually got better at running the case than my dad. Can’t beat him on a 2 stick though.

    I'm always busting the hoses that are on the side when I lock my boom. It's a poor design with the K series backhoes. It's a very tight area for those hoses.

    • @IndyFarmLife
      @IndyFarmLife  Před 2 lety

      Yes!! I learned that the hard way. When I took the boom cylinder off to repack it, I didn't get the hoses/clamps back exactly where they needed to go. Went to use my freshly pack cylinder, put it in transport mode and boom...hose busted! Not the happiest that day.
