  • Superman plays a role of inspiration. He is there to show what a model human is. Someone who is compassionate, loving, and always chooses what is right. In all reiterations of Superman, when he dies; they do not mourn his strength, but they mourn the hope he brings. They mourn a person who always does what is right.

@@beishicheong2232 I disagree. Superman is a noble true hero and has proven as with and without abilities. It's who he is at his core that makes him human, because of two good, true and pure hearted simple human farmers that Loves him and would die for him, he is their son physically human or not he is the son of Johnathan and Martha Kent, Superman may physically be an alien, but he is more human than anyone will acknowledge and that is why his greatest ,best and in my opinion his better ability that sets him apart from the rest of the DC heroes is his ability to INSPIRE.

Yeah, in a holgram. But he gave up for 10 years just because one guy got away with murder. And to top it all off, he expects everyone to follow along with his ideals and punished them for refusing. And by the end, he is just talked out of doing more harm after a scene involving mass murder. No one was likable (except maybe fascist Batman of all people and not by much), everyone was a plot device, and the ending was a letdown and rushed ham-fisted happy go-lucky series of “we learned our lesson, let’s be better for better future sake”events that rivals Steven Universe’s finale of rushed plot convenience for a quick, “happy”, yet unsatisfying ending. Kingdom Come was the story that made me hate Superman and made me see him as nothing more than a being who gives up and only acts to usurp his authority over others when it’s convenient for him. There are way better versions of him done by the writers of this story, Mark Waid and Alex Ross. I think it was the artwork by Ross that tricked people into believing this story was phenomenal- like a movie with a bad story but great eye-catching visuals- but there are times when you realize the art is too much and feels artificial, stiff, and fake. I’ve grown to like Superman over the years, but in my opinion KC doesn’t portray him or the other “heroes” in a way that makes them great characters.

He still pursued an investigation on Intergang with a risk being killed and still managed to post the story for the public. When Martian Manhunter gave that eulogy at Superman's funeral in the Justice League episode "Hereafter", what struck me was not only what J'onn says, but the score (Which I heard at the beginning of this video). "Though we are gathered here today, bound together in sorrow and loss, we share a precious gift. We are all of us privileged to live a life that has been touched by Superman. The Man of Steel possessed many extraordinary gifts and he shared them with us freely. None of these gifts were more remarkable than his ability to discern what needed to be done and his unfailing courage in doing it, whatever the personal cost. Let us all strive to accept his gift and pass it along, as an ongoing tribute to Kal-El of Krypton. The immigrant from the stars who taught us all how to be heroes." That broke my heart when I heard it the first time. Superman is powerful, and in more ways than one.

That doesn't mean he can't be written as human at the same time. Superman is also a person, he has a personality, he has likes and dislikes. He has hobbies, funny moments, sad moments, times when he's angry and times when he's happy. Yes he's an ideal but he is more than that. An ideal doesn't cry to it's mother mother over those it couldn't save. A person does that.

Clark Kent is the man trying and occasionally stumbling and failing to be that ideal, that all-powerful ideal that can save everyone, he as much as everyone sees superman as something to aspire towards
sadly not every writer realizes this and have occasionally had superman be that impossible mary sue character

I agree the best Superman is the one where he is Clark Kent first and Superman/Kal-El second, but I personally believe for Batman that Bruce Wayne is the real face and there are two masks he wears: the superhero Batman who Bruce Wayne created and is essentially an extension of all his years of training, studying, and perfecting his mind and body to fight injustice; and the billionaire playboy “Bruce Wayne” who he becomes to throw people off from his his superhero activities. The best visual representation of the real Bruce Wayne (to me) is him wearing the bat suit minus the cowl. Those are just my thoughts on the matter.

Every time I watch this video, I’m always taken back to the first Superman story I read, the one that firmly cemented what a Hero should be. It was a little comic for the leap pad interactive book things, based of the Superman anamated series. In the first story a man, Hank, loves reading Superman stories in the paper and wishes he “could be just like Superman!” As the story goes on, we see Superman fighting a robot and Hank watching the battle. Then he notices something, a woman and her kid trapped in their car by debbre! With out thinking Hank rushes to help, saving the woman and child. She calls him a hero and thanks him, but Hank denies the hero part becaus he doesn’t think highly of himself. Then Superman shows up telling Hank he was indeed a hero and delivers the moral of “you don’t have to be Super to be a Hero” and ends it. That story and the many more my firefighter father told me shaped how I saw heroes and how I tried to act. That is what makes him different and important, that inspiration. And to me, a Superman is not Superman unless he could inspire Hank or anyone else to rush into danger to help another person.

And I even though it's hard Indian if you can make one good change and even one person's life, then all the pain and all the struggle you go through if you can do one good thing for even one life it makes it all worth it, it's enough to keep going on.

This is the first video of yours that I've seen, & man, what a first impression! Your point on how Clark Kent, stripped of his Superman persona & powers, would still try to save as many people as he could is spot on. Similar to what you brought up in your video, I think people get lost in the powers & abilities of what Superman can do. They get lost in the Super part of his name while negating the Man aspect, & I suspect that a lot of that has to do how poorly he's been handled in his movies. It doesn't matter how many All-Star Superman's & Superman For All Seasons' (a personal favorite of mine) are written, if the movies continue to make the Man seem boring & the Super the only thing that matters, no one's mind is going to change.

Superman is a great inspiration, but always remember who you are as a person!
Accept what you can and cannot do, and make the most of it. Never push yourself to be seen as good or great, but only push because you believe in your own cause.
I loved more then half my life helping others, just so the world can be better. But I helped other people so much, that I neglected the most important one: myself.
At a point were I was almost dead, I realised that when I’m gone, those people don’t have me to help them. But later I realised, that there are other people who help too.
I accepteer the help of others, to help myself. And now 4 years later, I’m still recovering.
But I know that when I am ready, I can help more people then I ever could if I died.
So I cannot help every being I know at the moment, but I can help myself and a few other people too if needeed. And those people add up during my life, and maybe help others. In that way, we all are super. Not because we want to be, but because we believe in ourselves.
(Sorry if it is hard to understand, it’s difficult describing something you don’t have the words for)
    Have a nice day ☺️

I watched the entirety of Superman the animated series and oh boy. Super man is just an average joe given the power of a god. As a kid he was confused about his abilities and saw them as freaky. As a teenager he took advantage of them on a bully, but it freaked his friend out. As a mature adult he saw his powers as a way to make the world a better place. By being a hero, he can be what humanity should aspire to be. Not super strong or super smart. But have a super heart. In the show I thought he had no personality. But he does and he only reveals it to his family and friends. He has to be Superman, an icon of good. If he ever quivers or breaks, if anyone catches his moment of weaknesses, it would shake people’s faith in him and allow his foe’s to find a crack in his strong exterior. The world’s faith weights heavy on his shoulders but he carries it with glee. Superman is the beauty of humanity.

Before Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, I thought all superheroes solved their problems with their fists. Through Superman along with Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Batman, Wonder Woman, Black Canary, Doctor Fate, Hawkgirl, and many others, I see the great divide between heroes and the ordinary. We humans often envy those who are stronger, smarter, faster, or simply better than us and yet they help us and drive us to be better. I don't need a superhuman ability like Kal-El, but I can give people hope, and all I need is a few words.

Superman and Spider-Man is different. Spider-Man has to do good, based on that line. He has to do good because “With great power, comes great responsibilities”. He becomes a hero because he has the power to do so. He feels like he has to be a hero, because he has the powers and its his responsibilities.
Superman, on the other hand, wants to do good. He's taught by Martha and Jonathan Kent to do good. Even if he doesnt have his powers, he would still do good because thats what he believes in, and he wants to do good.

Justice League and JLU show why Batman and Superman are great, it shows how Batman cares about human life, like when he sat with Ace until she died, and it showed how Superman is chill and human before he is powerful and alien, which is how I saw him before I watched the shows, but they showed why he is a great character, same with Batman

One of the reasons i surprisingly don't like superman II, because Clark is depicted as a petty selfish jerk in that movie. Clark kicking superman's a$$ in Superman III is where it's at, showing that what makes the man of steel great is his empathy and compassion, not his superhuman strength.

I have a love/hate relationship with Superman. My favorite depictions of him are the animated cartoons (both the old Fleischer shorts and DCAU ones) and the John Byrne run in the comics, because they don’t make him absurdly powerful, and focus more on his humanity.
Superman is at his best when he is dealing with his humanity, which can include anger, frustration, humility, and compassion. He is less interesting, in my opinion, when he’s just breezing through challenges with a smile on his face. This is one of the reasons why it’s hard for me to get into All Star Superman, despite how good I’ve heard it is.

  • @SleepTastesGood
    @SleepTastesGood Před 4 lety +4

I have always said that Superman's story isn't as much a conflict of a hero and his rogues gallery but a story about humanity. What shapes us. What drives us. It's why his most well known enemy as well as his most well known friend are near foils of each other-
Lex Luthor, a normal man who uses his intelligence and resources for the benefit of himself in spite of others.
Bruce Wayne/ Batman, a normal man who uses his intelligence and resources for the benefit of others in spite of himself.
Superman is the deconstruction of the concept of "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" the story of someone raised to be a good person before all else, and takes that lesson and applies it to the best of his abilities. Sure there are stories where he fails this idea, but Superman is only truly Superman when he sticks by it.
Superman is not Batman. Batman became the true persona while Bruce became the disguise. Superman will always be Clark Kent first. Clark drives him to do good. Clark drives him to be better than he once was and to inspire others to do the same. Clark is proud of his humanity.

Superman is the only character in my list of favorite DC characters that doesn't completely represent my favorite aspect of the DCU, Legacy. Wally West and Dick Grayson are and likely will be for a very long time in my top 5 fictional characters of all time for this reason, they represent the idea that you can be the best you even if you have a massive shadow to fill, Barry Allen and Batman. Superman is one DC character I love nearly as much and he doesn't embody this ideal at all. Clark is my favorite not because he is the perfect being, he really isn't, but because he strives to be. He makes mistakes and every time it kills him inside. Wally and Dick will personally beat out Clark on my list of favorites for a long time to come but that doesn't take anything away from my love of the big blue himself either. He is what every person should strive to become, a man who tries to be perfect. I would love to hear what you think about that idea of Legacy that is so important in DC and if it means anything to you like it does to me. Thanks

Tyler Vannosdall I respectfully disagree. Superman still ties into the theme of legacy.
The opening tune in this video is Superman’s funeral from JLU. That scene - and Superman’s death and funeral - rocked not just the world in the DC, but also our own real world. His impact didn’t just affect the heroes and his loved ones within the DC Universe, but even people like us (even William Shatner).
Superman represented the nonstop unbreakable willpower to do what was right regardless of the personal cost. He taught all of us all to be heroes.

    • @t-vann48
      @t-vann48 Před 6 lety +2

Superman has a Legacy yes, but he really isnt following a Legacy though. Nightwing and Wally have tons of these amazing mentors who have done some amazing stuff,Wally has to live up to Barry who sacrificed his life to save the multiverse, Nightwing has to live up to Batman who is Batman and even Superman's Legacy since thats where he got his name from. Their stories are about living up to the Legacy of these already amazing heroes, and Superman doesn't have that. He is creating a legacy for new heroes. He is the inspirer not the inspired.
