The dog in this video is mine (I'm the fat guy owner). Beckman's is AMAZING. Zoey was an abused and abandoned rescue considered unadoptable by the humane society. She was never socialized and likley tramautized when she was on the street. We've spent a lot of time and money on other trainers, inlcuding some very good ones - but the progress made by Joel in one hour was incredible. We have just sent her back for a two-week session and she is making huge progress. I highly recommend Joel and Liz, and am thankful to them.
Did the other trainers use this method of introducing her to other dogs and (eventually) letting them play? This is so valuable, and so darned rare. We have access to a trainer in Duluth, MN that uses this method - walking with other dogs, being crated near other dogs, and then monitored play with their dogs in a fenced area. Interaction with other dogs is the lynch pin of their training process.Homeschooled Pooch. We lucked out with our Chicago Animal Control stray bulldog. He needed other dogs to get sane. It has taken a full year to turn him into a calm, confident house dog and loving family pet. He still goes for training/play days twice a month.
Telling your Dog was abused and abandoned and now its "corrected", but your dog still wearing a collar with spikes inside, what hurt the dog, if it just pull a little bit on the leash, makes you kind of ignorant to me. I am sorry to say that but thats my personal opinion.
Not just me then. We are fostering two right now and have experienced raptor pitbulls but the consistent energy level in Sheppies is unmatched! Maybe Border Collies.
She has intense, extremely excitable energy. Not only does that cause her to be twitchy, but also every dog she met. You could tell she didn't like that big guy because her energy put him on "I ain't gonna play that game" mode. He was just ready to defend himself like a calm pro fighter lol Handling dogs and assessing corrections is a combination of science and art, which you display with skill.
I really think she'll become a good dog. Her owner is very inquisitive and I'm sure he wants to help her as best as he can, so I hope they manage to erase all the problems she currently has. Also, happy to see a healthy GSD.
I wish I knew all this when I was 13 and my family got our German Shepherd. She's 12 now, a whole life of unsocializing and extreme reactiveness. I feel sad for her and the fact that I was a dumb teen during her upbringing and didn't intervene.. I promise I'll be different with my next dog
Dogs have nature. So do we. Your nature is to feel bad about doing what you perceive as 'wrong', so you were probably the same while you were raising her. You can't be perfect, but you can do your best. I'm gonna assume you did your best, so she had it better than a lot of other pets.

Ran into a couple training their GSD yesterday at the market, while I was training my Staffy. They saw that I was following your method, and we got together and had a great session for both our dogs. Check out Joel's Rottweiler named Creed video for loose leash walking and reactivity. There's also a dog named Boomie, I believe - Chihuahua mix. Other small dog videos too if you don't have a 100lb Rottweiler. Good things happen around other dogs. There's also a technique called LAT - Look at That. Probably a threshold thing for your dog. Find out where you can get your dog to sit and/or check in with you before he starts getting agitated and start there, gradually building his/her confidence to get closer. Suzanne Clothier's automatic check in should help as well. Hope that helps.
My dominant dog reactive dog just did a board and train at Beckman’s. My dog and I both love Prince. He is definitely a prince of a dog. My dog is doing so much better since making dog friends and socializing with them even now she’s back at home. Huge gains.
I am from Germany. Many of this breed in our country have problems with other dogs, because they are undersocialized. This reflects badly on the German shepherd. What a pitty! I myself had one from a kennel. We managed to get him used to our cat, but he never got along with other dogs. Thank you for caring for these dogs and sharing your profound knowledge with us. It is so valuable to help these dogs.
thats a countryside germany thing in general i feel like... i encounter way more undersocialized and reactive big dogs in rural germany, than here in the city.

My Shepkita is the same way. He is always so excited to meet other dogs. We go to the dog park and he is great. Except when he sees a small dog, then his prey drive kicks in. But the great thing about my dog is I've trained him to have perfect recall. So I just call him back to me, and he gets praised. Once he has had time to calm down after awhile, he isn't so prey driven anymore. He is a really good boy, just 8 months old. But I have had to put so much time and effort into creating the bond and the skills he has. And that's what it's all about. The owner has to have the patience and skill level to be able to get their dog to a good level of obedience and then the trust can happen. It really is a beautiful thing. I used your methods to introduce my reactive border line aggressive dog (has a bite history) to another dog today. First dog he has met in 1 year since his brother dog passed away and the first dog other than his brother in 2 years. We worked through a fence, and he was losing his mind. After a while we worked them closer and closer to each other. The real success was when we let both dogs walk lose leash near each other after a while they properly introduced themselves (butt sniffs) and while they were not playing together, I feel it was because the model dog I was using was unsure of my dog after his big reactivity outburst and generally stiff body language. By the end of the day, I had my dog off leach muzzle on indoors with another dog almost playing together! The key that may get other looked in these videos is the verbal correction and how it is delivered. Strong, loud, and sharp with the dog knowing i have the ability to back up the verbal correction by grabbing him and sitting him down. He still gets too worked up when the other dog started to play, and he constantly tried to be dominate but I feel this is likely an effect of not being around dogs for so long. Thank you so much for putting out this content and making it available for free.
I love your videos. This German Shepherd here is virtually identical to mine (exact same personality; 4.5 yrs; adopted at 15 months from GSD rescue). As one experienced dog boarder put it, she's fine with other dogs but likes to dictate the terms of her meeting with them, which means that if she's doing that with another dominant dog, things kick off, or if she's doing that with a fearful dog, that dog may lash out out of fear and things also kick off. Unfortunately this makes socializing with other dogs VERY challenging, as the range of socialization (or lack thereof) of dogs at public dog parks is just far too wide. I'm glad you quickly recognized that this is NOT the sign of an aggressive dog that "hates other dogs", but rather a dominant personality that is just too pushy at the outset. If anything, this video points out some aspects of why GSD's are challenging and not for every dog owner.

I love how good you are at reading dogs. German Shepherds are generally nice and social dogs but they are also often very dominant and physical which needs to be adressed (best with early sozialisation). Many just missunderstand it and avoid other dogs which just makes the situation worse as the gsd has no chance to adapt and learn other dogs' language. My Shepherd ist just like this one, very very physical, strong prey drive but he is overly friendly and would love to play with each and every dog (which he obviously can't) but due to them being head-strong, it needs a firm owner to teach them manners and how to approach other dogs politely. Owners who just avoid other dogs or believe their GSDs physicalness is agressive behaviour create a dangerous dog. It's my first Shepherd and they are easy to train yet also stubborn and really need a strict training unlike my Akita who is stoic and while without any will to please actually very easy to train as they are reserved and usually focused on their owner by nature.
I love your in depth comment about GSD's, you explain it well! I've delt with their easeness and stubborn attitude when i worked at a boarding facility. I plan on getting a GSD though I have four chihuahuas so I'll definitely have an experience lol. Best wishes to you!

I have a male that does the same thing. He is unsocialized with other dogs. I haven’t been able to find other dogs that are under control. He only gets along with our 7 yr old Dobie. I watch all the videos, but Ill probably need to take him up to see Joel. Thank you for the videos. I have made a lot of progress with lease walking.

I have just gone down a rabbit hole of your videos, and subbed immediately. I really want a German Shepard, but was going to wait and save enough money for training. I live in Maine, but I am ready to travel across the country for a visit lol I have a 90 pound American bully that I rescued nine months ago now… We need to come and visit you! He’s definitely not been socialized properly. He’s a lot like this dog just unsure of other dogs, huge prey drive and a little nippy, but he is a wonderful, wonderful dog and I’d love for him to be able to have some friends… play with other large dogs we have in our family nearby, and he needs to get that sort of energy out!
So thankful I found this. My 17 month old Doberman is like this. She's a rescue and has an issue meeting bigger dogs. Has always introduced herself forcefully but now it's getting snarly,and barking. I'm waiting on my consultation with a trainer in March
This video should go viral! It'd completely change the lives of so many dogs! I have a JRT like this GSD. He's a sweetie at home, but hates dogs outside his pack. We believe he was taken away from his mother too young and/or wasn't socialized at all when he was a puppy. We adopted him when he was 18 months.
I learned the "HEY!" yell from these Beckmann vids when my dog was a pup, and when other dogs were being too rough with mine. It works! I've never seen anyone else do it, they just let out a pitiful call to their dog who has no recall.
GS are courageous and a lot are not intimidated, which is probably why a small minority make the best partners for working police dogs, my mom and aunt loved GS, but they are not a dog my daughter would be happy around her, which is why I chose a cockapoo for her first dog. But each to their own. And no the run up to Prince was to try and intimidate him, it didn’t happen lol, she knew then when prince stood his ground...he wasn’t going to be intimidated!! That was a really good looking german shepherd. Over here in northern europe they have bred them to be lover in the back to a really bad degree. This one was good looking!

She's a good dog that never got properly socialised, it's a shame when people get big dogs like that but don't understand dogs so can't put them straight. You have such great dogs to do this kind of training with, so calm yet confident and assertive when needed but without aggression.
Been trying to work my reactive dog but I’m probably not as good but he has slowly started to understand who’s in charge and I give that credit to you and your videos thank you keep them coming
Good job Joel and Prince. Very under-socialised german shepherd-ish behaviour. It surprised me her hackles weren't up, GSD are quick to get them up when unsure so I am guessing its mostly that she has a LOT of prey drive and haven't learnt the dog interaction rules yet. I would be very very careful allowing her to interact with small dogs, totally get it why Joel kept the leash on around the mini aussie. Important to show her that small dogs deserve same respect as bigger ones. Owner seems very eager to help her so i'm confident eventually she will get a lot better! Best of luck! Love GSDs :)

nuriac: Absolutely correct. Sometimes GSDs don't distinguish between little dogs & stuffed toys - until they are TAUGHT (carefully). Of course it's easier to teach when they're puppies, but with lots of time and patience, most GSDs can unlearn even the habits of a lifetime.
Hi Joel, I have a Maltese Shitzu that had/has the same issue and your are spot on with what you say. My dog was a Covid dog and a rescue. What I mean by a Covid dog is that he was totally unsocialized with other dogs and people due to the Covid lockdowns. When I got him he could not be 50 yards from a dog without going crazy and was very hostile toward people. The only way to get over that part of his issues was persistence and I also enrolled him in a doggie daycare program after I had worked with him for 3 months. They helped introduce him to other dogs, carefully, and that was the beginning of him learning dog. However he still does the run up and depending on the dog, he will bark and chase, still working on this but getting better. Your method of a quick loud correction works, at times but not always, depending how invested he is at barking at the dog. My dog is still leash reactive and a fence fighter but if the dog is off lead he is usually OK. I struggle with the run up as I don’t know when it is going to happen and he is so fast, so can’t always head it off but I don’t want to stop bringing to the park as this is the only place where he learns about other dogs and ‘how to talk dog’. He also doesn’t know how to play with other dogs but is slowly tolerating the chasing and prancing. This video has been helpful and reassuring, so thank you and if you have other examples of how to correct the Runup, that would be helpful. Matilda from Australia
New subscriber. 5 year old shepherd lab who only socializes with a few dogs. She has a good nature, as you put it, but this video helps me see how I can begin to safely socialize her. She’s dominant but loves to play and I have felt unsure what to do. Not because I’m afraid she’ll hurt another dog but that she might trigger the wrong one and get hurt.

I would love more videos like this! I have a 2yr old GSD that's very similar to Zoe except she screams and she has an intense prey drive. It makes meeting with other dogs or people very difficult. She broke out of her harness and trampled a toddler yesterday (everyone was unharmed and the parents came back to meet my dog and tell me their son was unscathed). I can never find videos of trainers handling this kind of reactivity. Thank you!
Love this as my dog is reactive but no aggression, so good to see another reactive non aggressive dog. Mine is fearful and very barky & lungy. 1 question. Why did you leave her in the prong and not go to a normal collar? I didn't hear you mention it in the video. Thanks Joel.

I got my dog from the shelter when she was 4 months old and she's just turned 1 this month. During the freeze in Texas our pipes broke and we had to move into some apartments and I discovered that she was terrified of people. At our old house she used to walk up to people and let them pet her but now if she even hears people she starts shaking. It's hard trying to walk her because when I take her outside she starts pulling on a leash trying to get back to the house. But when I'm finally able to leave I take her on an hour-long walk and when we get back to the apartment she starts pulling again. If she has to use the restroom and hears someone outside, she'll refuse to walk out the door. She can see someone a block away and she'll stop walking and start shaking. I've tried treating from a distance, she doesn't take them. I've tried having her sit and watch people and she pees herself. I've tried turning around and coming back she pulls both directions. I've tried calming treats and they seem to work when she is inside but it doesn't work at all once we leave the house. If we bring someone in the house she'll sit in a corner and refuse to move until they leave. The only time she's at least tolerant of people is when she sees them walking their dog, then she'll start pulling me to the dog. If she can't get to the dog she will either bark at the dog or start crying while fixated on the dog. When at the dog park she will completely avoid people, she'll dodge them when they try to touch her or she won't even come close to them. I need help I don't know what to do, I've tried everything I can think of. I can't keep her inside the apartment because she has high energy and is destructive if I don't exercise her. I've been doing this for months and she hasn't improved at all.
I have had 5 German shepherds, 3 Irish wolfhounds and a chow. The wolfhounds, the chow and 2 female shepherds were fine with other dogs, the two male (neutered) male shepherds and one female were not. Three shelherds were rescues, two females and a male. All the shepherds went to training. Our current girl acts just like Zoey. She is 10 and trained but she hates other dogs. (Was on the streets when rescued). We put her on a down stay when we pass other dogs. Two of the five had canine good citizen certs. Neither liked other dogs, but were smart enough to know when in the ring, you behaved! Of the two girls who tolerated other dogs, one failed canine good citizen and we never tried with the other. She was so sweet she was fine with only minimal training. These are great dogs, but a challenge. All were different, all were smart. Not a dog for a first dog in my opinion. They require a lot of attention and training. The wolfhounds and chow were laid back and easy going.
My German Shepherd is like Zoe, & I got her June 2020 from local shelter, as an adult. She responded to patience, calm, confidence and LOTS of time with me. Luckily I'm retired. We walk 2x a day rain or shine & with a front loop harness so I Can Control her head. 3 years ago I was pulled over twice & all my joints ached from the pulling. I got all the help I could and it was all worth it. Not the couch potato I wanted, but the challenge I really needed.

We adopted an out of control one year old Malanois. Your videos and my alpha female Kelly fixed her. I still maintain that other dogs can teach a dogs things humans only dream of.
I've owned 2 GSDs prior to my current girl (with thankfully few problems) and I have picked up a couple of tips from this video for my current , slightly nervous and reactive, GSD. I find most American dog trainers talk alot but say little so thank you for your sensible and coherent approach. You really should do some videos targeted at people with those annoying, yappy, white rats who know f,all about owning a dog.
You and DogDaddyy are the best trainers I know so far! Almost every German CZcams-Dog-trainer works with positive reinforcement only, which does not work most the times..
Great to see the little dogs. We’re surrounded by little white dogs everywhere we go and especially where we live. Mine is tired of them behaving aggressively toward him and so am I, because if he responds to it, complaints about my dog go to the management. They start it, but he ends it. It’s gotten to the point, we only go out after 9 or 10pm to walk and play. It’s so frustrating. He’ll sit quietly watching them, but he has chased them a couple of times after escaping from the house. They sound like he’s killing them, but never have a scratch, let alone a bite on them. Seriously contemplating a trip south to see you and Prince, however we live north of San Francisco so it would be a major project. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. I always say if we can have a reactive or unsocialized dog meet successfully one dog that is the breakthrough needed to meet more in a safe structured way - The GS had some strong run ups and unsure tendencies but with Joel and the calm clear communication, really looked better each time, bravo 👏

The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.
I was recommended a harness by a trainer that attached the leash more towards the nose area. If my G. Shepard pulls or runs up on another dog it naturally pulls her head back towards the holder of the leash. Worked great for so many issues and she's a great walker now. Still have troubles when another dog is rude or young and tries to jump her. Definitely wish we had more dogs in the area to help build her confidence more in those situations.
I have a female (currently intact) American Bully mix. Used to do to the dog park, never had issues. Started to become reactive. Now can't take her to the dog park and she's jumping all over people at home, too. Love your videos, but I'm at a bit of a loss. There was no obvious event, other than aging,but now she's reactive to everything and is even biting/shredding the mail that comes in the door slot. Increased her activity, walking 3+ miles a day. Just wish I could see a dog torpedo like her on your channel. Thanks for everything. Educational every single time.

I’ve just found this channel and I’m just blown away by all of it. I have a small dog that attacks every dog it sees. I want him to meet Prince! But unfortunately I live in the UK. Subbed and liked. Amazing.
Check out Joel's Rottweiler named Creed video for loose leash walking and reactivity. There's also a dog named Boomie, I believe - Chihuahua mix. Other small dog videos too if you don't have a 100lb Rottweiler. Good things happen around other dogs. There's also a technique called LAT - Look at That. Probably a threshold thing for your dog. Find out where you can get your dog to sit and/or check in with you before he starts getting agitated and start there, gradually building his/her confidence to get closer. Suzanne Clothier's automatic check in should help as well. Hope that helps.
My dominant dog reactive dog just did a board and train at Beckman’s. My dog and I both love Prince. He is definitely a prince of a dog. My dog is doing so much better since making dog friends and socializing with them even now she’s back at home. Huge gains.
I am from Germany. Many of this breed in our country have problems with other dogs, because they are undersocialized. This reflects badly on the German shepherd. What a pitty!
I myself had one from a kennel. We managed to get him used to our cat, but he never got along with other dogs.

My Shepkita is the same way. He is always so excited to meet other dogs. We go to the dog park and he is great. Except when he sees a small dog, then his prey drive kicks in. But the great thing about my dog is I've trained him to have perfect recall. So I just call him back to me, and he gets praised. Once he has had time to calm down after awhile, he isn't so prey driven anymore. He is a really good boy, just 8 months old. But I have had to put so much time and effort into creating the bond and the skills he has. And that's what it's all about. The owner has to have the patience and skill level to be able to get their dog to a good level of obedience and then the trust can happen. It really is a beautiful thing. I just wanted to say how much Joel's videos have helped me and my dog. So thank you, Joel. You rock!!!!! ❤🙏 God bless you and your people and of course, PRINCE! He's such a gorgeous dog, and he is so brilliant!
I used your methods to introduce my reactive border line aggressive dog (has a bite history) to another dog today. First dog he has met in 1 year since his brother dog passed away and the first dog other than his brother in 2 years. We worked through a fence, and he was losing his mind. After a while we worked them closer and closer to each other. The real success was when we let both dogs walk lose leash near each other after a while they properly introduced themselves (butt sniffs) and while they were not playing together, I feel it was because the model dog I was using was unsure of my dog after his big reactivity outburst and generally stiff body language. By the end of the day, I had my dog off leach muzzle on indoors with another dog almost playing together!
The key that may get other looked in these videos is the verbal correction and how it is delivered. Strong, loud, and sharp with the dog knowing i have the ability to back up the verbal correction by grabbing him and sitting him down. He still gets too worked up when the other dog started to play, and he constantly tried to be dominate but I feel this is likely an effect of not being around dogs for so long.

I love your videos. This German Shepherd here is virtually identical to mine (exact same personality; 4.5 yrs; adopted at 15 months from GSD rescue). As one experienced dog boarder put it, she's fine with other dogs but likes to dictate the terms of her meeting with them, which means that if she's doing that with another dominant dog, things kick off, or if she's doing that with a fearful dog, that dog may lash out out of fear and things also kick off. Unfortunately this makes socializing with other dogs VERY challenging, as the range of socialization (or lack thereof) of dogs at public dog parks is just far too wide. I'm glad you quickly recognized that this is NOT the sign of an aggressive dog that "hates other dogs", but rather a dominant personality that is just too pushy at the outset. If anything, this video points out some aspects of why GSD's are challenging and not for every dog owner.

German Shepherds are generally nice and social dogs but they are also often very dominant and physical which needs to be adressed (best with early sozialisation). Many just missunderstand it and avoid other dogs which just makes the situation worse as the gsd has no chance to adapt and learn other dogs' language. My Shepherd ist just like this one, very very physical, strong prey drive but he is overly friendly and would love to play with each and every dog (which he obviously can't) but due to them being head-strong, it needs a firm owner to teach them manners and how to approach other dogs politely. Owners who just avoid other dogs or believe their GSDs physicalness is agressive behaviour create a dangerous dog. It's my first Shepherd and they are easy to train yet also stubborn and really need a strict training unlike my Akita who is stoic and while without any will to please actually very easy to train as they are reserved and usually focused on their owner by nature.
I love your in depth comment about GSD's, you explain it well! I've delt with their easeness and stubborn attitude when i worked at a boarding facility. I plan on getting a GSD though I have four chihuahuas so I'll definitely have an experience lol. Best wishes to you!

I have a male that does the same thing. He is unsocialized with other dogs. I haven’t been able to find other dogs that are under control. He only gets along with our 7 yr old Dobie.
I watch all the videos, but Ill probably need to take him up to see Joel.

I live in Maine, but I am ready to travel across the country for a visit lol I have a 90 pound American bully that I rescued nine months ago now… We need to come and visit you! He’s definitely not been socialized properly. He’s a lot like this dog just unsure of other dogs, huge prey drive and a little nippy, but he is a wonderful, wonderful dog and I’d love for him to be able to have some friends… play with other large dogs we have in our family nearby, and he needs to get that sort of energy out!

So thankful I found this. My 17 month old Doberman is like this. She's a rescue and has an issue meeting bigger dogs. Has always introduced herself forcefully but now it's getting snarly,and barking. I'm waiting on my consultation with a trainer in March
This video should go viral! It'd completely change the lives of so many dogs! I have a JRT like this GSD. He's a sweetie at home, but hates dogs outside his pack. We believe he was taken away from his mother too young and/or wasn't socialized at all when he was a puppy. We adopted him when he was 18 months.
I learned the "HEY!" yell from these Beckmann vids when my dog was a pup, and when other dogs were being too rough with mine. It works! I've never seen anyone else do it, they just let out a pitiful call to their dog who has no recall.
GS are courageous and a lot are not intimidated, which is probably why a small minority make the best partners for working police dogs, my mom and aunt loved GS, but they are not a dog my daughter would be happy around her, which is why I chose a cockapoo for her first dog.
But each to their own.
And no the run up to Prince was to try and intimidate him, it didn’t happen lol, she knew then when prince stood his ground...he wasn’t going to be intimidated!!

That was a really good looking german shepherd. Over here in northern europe they have bred them to be lover in the back to a really bad degree. This one was good looking!

She's a good dog that never got properly socialised, it's a shame when people get big dogs like that but don't understand dogs so can't put them straight. You have such great dogs to do this kind of training with, so calm yet confident and assertive when needed but without aggression.

Good job Joel and Prince. Very under-socialised german shepherd-ish behaviour. It surprised me her hackles weren't up, GSD are quick to get them up when unsure so I am guessing its mostly that she has a LOT of prey drive and haven't learnt the dog interaction rules yet. I would be very very careful allowing her to interact with small dogs, totally get it why Joel kept the leash on around the mini aussie. Important to show her that small dogs deserve same respect as bigger ones. Owner seems very eager to help her so i'm confident eventually she will get a lot better! Best of luck! Love GSDs :)
Thank you Nuria. I am that owner, and yes, I am very eager help her. She is now one week into a two-week stay at Beckman's. Can't say enough about the quality of facility and the expertise of Joel - and or course Prince is - a prince.
nuriac: Absolutely correct. Sometimes GSDs don't distinguish between little dogs & stuffed toys - until they are TAUGHT (carefully).
Of course it's easier to teach when they're puppies, but with lots of time and patience, most GSDs can unlearn even the habits of a lifetime.

I have a Maltese Shitzu that had/has the same issue and your are spot on with what you say. My dog was a Covid dog and a rescue. What I mean by a Covid dog is that he was totally unsocialized with other dogs and people due to the Covid lockdowns. When I got him he could not be 50 yards from a dog without going crazy and was very hostile toward people. The only way to get over that part of his issues was persistence and I also enrolled him in a doggie daycare program after I had worked with him for 3 months. They helped introduce him to other dogs, carefully, and that was the beginning of him learning dog. However he still does the run up and depending on the dog, he will bark and chase, still working on this but getting better. Your method of a quick loud correction works, at times but not always, depending how invested he is at barking at the dog. My dog is still leash reactive and a fence fighter but if the dog is off lead he is usually OK. I struggle with the run up as I don’t know when it is going to happen and he is so fast, so can’t always head it off but I don’t want to stop bringing to the park as this is the only place where he learns about other dogs and ‘how to talk dog’. He also doesn’t know how to play with other dogs but is slowly tolerating the chasing and prancing. This video has been helpful and reassuring, so thank you and if you have other examples of how to correct the Runup, that would be helpful.

New subscriber. 5 year old shepherd lab who only socializes with a few dogs. She has a good nature, as you put it, but this video helps me see how I can begin to safely socialize her. She’s dominant but loves to play and I have felt unsure what to do. Not because I’m afraid she’ll hurt another dog but that she might trigger the wrong one and get hurt.

I would love more videos like this! I have a 2yr old GSD that's very similar to Zoe except she screams and she has an intense prey drive. It makes meeting with other dogs or people very difficult. She broke out of her harness and trampled a toddler yesterday (everyone was unharmed and the parents came back to meet my dog and tell me their son was unscathed). I can never find videos of trainers handling this kind of reactivity. Thank you!

I got my dog from the shelter when she was 4 months old and she's just turned 1 this month. During the freeze in Texas our pipes broke and we had to move into some apartments and I discovered that she was terrified of people. At our old house she used to walk up to people and let them pet her but now if she even hears people she starts shaking. It's hard trying to walk her because when I take her outside she starts pulling on a leash trying to get back to the house. But when I'm finally able to leave I take her on an hour-long walk and when we get back to the apartment she starts pulling again. If she has to use the restroom and hears someone outside, she'll refuse to walk out the door. She can see someone a block away and she'll stop walking and start shaking. I've tried treating from a distance, she doesn't take them. I've tried having her sit and watch people and she pees herself. I've tried turning around and coming back she pulls both directions. I've tried calming treats and they seem to work when she is inside but it doesn't work at all once we leave the house.
If we bring someone in the house she'll sit in a corner and refuse to move until they leave. The only time she's at least tolerant of people is when she sees them walking their dog, then she'll start pulling me to the dog. If she can't get to the dog she will either bark at the dog or start crying while fixated on the dog. When at the dog park she will completely avoid people, she'll dodge them when they try to touch her or she won't even come close to them. I need help I don't know what to do, I've tried everything I can think of. I can't keep her inside the apartment because she has high energy and is destructive if I don't exercise her. I've been doing this for months and she hasn't improved at all.
I have had 5 German shepherds, 3 Irish wolfhounds and a chow. The wolfhounds, the chow and 2 female shepherds were fine with other dogs, the two male (neutered) male shepherds and one female were not. Three shelherds were rescues, two females and a male. All the shepherds went to training. Our current girl acts just like Zoey. She is 10 and trained but she hates other dogs. (Was on the streets when rescued). We put her on a down stay when we pass other dogs. Two of the five had canine good citizen certs. Neither liked other dogs, but were smart enough to know when in the ring, you behaved! Of the two girls who tolerated other dogs, one failed canine good citizen and we never tried with the other. She was so sweet she was fine with only minimal training. These are great dogs, but a challenge. All were different, all were smart. Not a dog for a first dog in my opinion. They require a lot of attention and training. The wolfhounds and chow were laid back and easy going.
My German Shepherd is like Zoe, & I got her June 2020 from local shelter, as an adult. She responded to patience, calm, confidence and LOTS of time with me. Luckily I'm retired. We walk 2x a day rain or shine & with a front loop harness so I Can Control her head.
3 years ago I was pulled over twice & all my joints ached from the pulling. I got all the help I could and it was all worth it.
Not the couch potato I wanted, but the challenge I really needed.

I've owned 2 GSDs prior to my current girl (with thankfully few problems) and I have picked up a couple of tips from this video for my current , slightly nervous and reactive, GSD. I find most American dog trainers talk alot but say little so thank you for your sensible and coherent approach. You really should do some videos targeted at people with those annoying, yappy, white rats who know f,all about owning a dog.

Great to see the little dogs. We’re surrounded by little white dogs everywhere we go and especially where we live. Mine is tired of them behaving aggressively toward him and so am I, because if he responds to it, complaints about my dog go to the management. They start it, but he ends it. It’s gotten to the point, we only go out after 9 or 10pm to walk and play. It’s so frustrating. He’ll sit quietly watching them, but he has chased them a couple of times after escaping from the house. They sound like he’s killing them, but never have a scratch, let alone a bite on them. Seriously contemplating a trip south to see you and Prince, however we live north of San Francisco so it would be a major project. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. I suggested Joel should have fan dog clubs around the country so likeminded owners could get together. 🙏🥰👏

im watching cesar milan. hes a deity. also he may slightly understate the follow up needed. hes so calming himself we dont know if its just his influence. he perfectly explains - its about follow up. the dogs of trainers are not representative because theyre zen. (im giving credit and im not knocking anyone.)

I always say if we can have a reactive or unsocialized dog meet successfully one dog that is the breakthrough needed to meet more in a safe structured way - The GS had some strong run ups and unsure tendencies but with Joel and the calm clear communication, really looked better each time, bravo 👏

I was recommended a harness by a trainer that attached the leash more towards the nose area. If my G. Shepard pulls or runs up on another dog it naturally pulls her head back towards the holder of the leash. Worked great for so many issues and she's a great walker now. Still have troubles when another dog is rude or young and tries to jump her. Definitely wish we had more dogs in the area to help build her confidence more in those situations.

I have a female (currently intact) American Bully mix. Used to do to the dog park, never had issues. Started to become reactive. Now can't take her to the dog park and she's jumping all over people at home, too. Love your videos, but I'm at a bit of a loss. There was no obvious event, other than aging,but now she's reactive to everything and is even biting/shredding the mail that comes in the door slot. Increased her activity, walking 3+ miles a day. Just wish I could see a dog torpedo like her on your channel. Thanks for everything. Educational every single time.
