      She acts to the back of the house which is to say that wants the person on the last row of the balcony to see what she is doing on stage. Too many opera singers just act to the camera which leaves the live experience lacking. Diana thankfully doesn’t do that.

    • @alejandrotm
      @alejandrotm Před 5 měsíci +2

      Not at all, she made a short pause that is not usually made because she realized she went a bit too far when throwing the glass away and may have hit something. The thing is that Damrau is very histrionic when performing, and more so if the character fits, and in this case one could say her Violetta is highly inebriated while singing this final cabaletta and acts as a drunk person.

    • @EIizabethGrace
      @EIizabethGrace Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@alejandrotm Wait, why are we so sure this wasn’t part of the production? Has something been said about it? This sort of thing isn’t really done off the cuff, afaik, and I imagine that especially applies to the destruction of a prop in a way that could hurt someone _and_ that would require someone to be on it pronto to pick up shards of glass and dry up the floor before someone gets injured. And it’s not like Damrau’s a newbie who doesn’t know how far she can take improv.
      Also, the hesitation 100% makes sense in character. A moment where Violetta can’t help but acknowledge she’s lying to herself about her emotions before forcing herself to put the mask back on. It also looks in character to me: not like Damrau’s off-stage mannerisms or in any way disjointed from the rest. Not to mention, I’ve seen her have on-stage mishaps - including dynamic, visible ones caused by other singers or external circumstances, as opposed to an off-stage one caused by her own deliberate action - and she _never_ makes it this obvious. I’d be really surprised if this wasn’t completely planned.

    So my piano career was over, I am standing on stage performing some theatrical piece as an opera singer now, looking half drunk because all my hard work went to waste...not even in a shy way like Sinatra sings, next was noticing my best friend in the audience who decided to wave her hand on me while I was singing, I then lose all my muscles, fall with a laughter, then check the audience, recover right away and continue singing. While during piano performance your hands cannot shake, during opera singing you have tickles... hope with maturity it all ends!

Now the acuti for which made her famous are omitted or rather uncontrolled screams. She should had just stuck with the lighter coloratura repertoire if she wasn’t going to redevelop the sound. Regrettably the pressures to grow are immense and not every performer leans into the next level well . Her performances of La Contessa are absurd really as the voice is too light. She is a committed actress yet this Violetta was just serviceable. She sounds like Oscar or Norina here.

      The audience absolutely disagrees with you, just listen to the applause at the end, and it was at Metropolitan Opera not at some town theatre.
      Diana has a fluid coloratura and pronounces words in Italian very well. Your comment is full of hate without argument.

      Dear @@enzomasciulli976 ...my comment is exactly the opposite , because i respect the singer ... i think this is a terrible page in her career ... and i´m sure you can listen to it and realize im right ! And i´m sure this beloved singer knows this is not good at all ... no hate here ! But i respect your opinion, and admire your defense of the singer ... so respect mine too... un abbracio caro Enzo

      So are you a vocal coach? Or maybe you’re an operatic soprano too? Would you sing better than her? What are your arguments to say her singing is not correct, well tuned, correctly projected? Before criticizing someone’s job, make sure you can do it as good or even better 😉

      Theatrical acting is over acting by definition. The people at the bottom of the audience need to see as well. You know, there were no screens hundreds of years ago nor microphones, so even if her voice is not anymore in shape is due to the necessity of being heard and using your body as resonance. Stop the hating if you can't understand what it takes to make the craft.
