The comment by Gurdas Mann three years ago regarding Punjabi versus Hindi was his strategy to gain cheap popularity and profit at the cost of Punjabi and at the behest of vested interests. A common person doing it may not have gotten so much media attention, nevertheless, it would have been rated by any right thinking person as being as blameworthy as Gurdas Mann's comment. Mann's success and popularity do not belie the fact that his reaction to peaceful protest for it was that of an immature, cranky and slow- witted person, and is called abusive in today's world. Now , Mann's apology through his new song is as foolish and spiteful as that of a common man in the same situation. People with wisdom and a good will actually apologize; they don't taunt and blame as Mann did in the song. In fact, he is wishful that people are crazy to listen to him again and are apologetic.The good form (voice quality, music, etc.) of the song does not qualify him for a pardon for his craftiness in making those comments or the antagonism in the wording of his new song.
In "Gaddar ma da gaddar puttar" "ma" is those who patronized Mann in making comments in an effort to devalue Punjabi, and the puttar is the singer who earned a livelihood out of Punjabi till he could and then tried to benefit by supporting Hindi at the cost of Punjabi. This is not a comment on his biological mother in the poster as claimed by him in the song. This claim in the song is an attempt by him to gain undeserving sympathy of the gullible Indian masses. In vain Mann is trying to wish and create imaginary one sided situations in the song to justify his foolishness and acrimony. Also, I find it strange that he thinks that there should be a "joint" language acceptable to all and making it easy for everyone to understand each other. Does he not know that as of today, the Indian constitution recognizes 22 major languages of India as national languages, Punjabi being one of them in what is known as “the 8th Schedule” of the Constitution. We already have English and Hindi in India as official and link languages that are acceptable to all and make it easy for everyone to understand each other. Mann's calls Hindi "masi" which, he implies is interchangeable with mother tongue and he supports "one language one nation" slogan. Does he not know or pretends not to know that the motive behind this slogan is a ploy so Hindi can gradually usurp regional languages thereby making it easy for a centrist culture to appropriate and assimilate the regional cultures.
By the way, why does Mann say he served Punjabi all his life. Is he capable of singing in any other language full time? Did he sing of the turbulent times of 80's in Punjab or of 1984? That is true test of love for Punjab and Punjabiyat.
