Isopod Tree Root Forest Vivarium with Easy Clay Background

  • We've made so many different projects over the years and many of those builds included isopods. Till now, you've mostly seen them in vivariums and terrariums, which were a lot of fun. Even still, I haven't made a dedicated setup for them yet. Why? I honestly don't really know. Now seemed like the perfect time though.
I wanted to do things differently for this build. The enclosure itself is pretty standard, other than the sliding doors. I typically wouldn't use them on such a small enclosure. It worked for this because the tank is long.
I also wanted to showcase how to make a clay background. Although I've made them in the past and mentioned them in previous videos, I've never properly showcased them before. That said, I did briefly mention them in the Wabi Kusa tutorial. • Jungle Aquarium Plant ...
The combination of various elements made for a unique-looking setup that showcases the isopods well. As I said in the video, I wanted to loosely replicate the look of a fallen tree. Specifically the uprooted area. I didn't have much to work with at the time, but regardless, I think I pulled off that look quite well. What do you think? Let me know in the comments!

I have this really densely planted tropical terrarium that I decided to add a few dairy cow isopods to to help clean up any dead or dying vegetation. I barely saw them for about 4 months other than when they were eating and then suddenly one day there was just juvenile isopods everywhere! I’ve now learned that even with regular feeding isopods will still happily eat begonias I’m not complaining though because they are some pretty cool lil guys.

As someone who loves and breeds Isopods, this makes me extremely happy. Thanks for this awesome video Tanner! :) PS: It's easier for the Isopods to eat dead leaves. Can't really tell how fresh the leaf litter is in this video, but it doesn't look 100% favorable. But if u want to go for a more natural and fancy look with fresher leaves it will still somewhat do the trick.

I know that it works perfectly to grind up aquatic moss and some soil to dry start it in a tank. Not sure if you know this, but organic BBQ smoking pellets (I use Traeger brand) are a GREAT food source for isopods. I fill a gallon Ziploc bag with about a quarter inch of pellets, then add some dechlorinated water. The pellets break down and turn to a fluffy sawdust, which I then feed to my pods (raising P. Laevis but planning on starting a powder blue colony soon). Little guys love it, and there's very little risk of it attracting mites if it sits out.
I just supplement with kitchen scraps once a week, and my population is booming.

When I was growing up, we would call them garbage bugs. Not sure if it's a regional thing or just from my family. I've also heard pill bugs and rollie pollies. Love your videos!

I love this vivarium so much! How delightful to make a scape to showcase these cute little crustaceans. You captured the look of a fallen tree so well, while still keeping your characteristic style to it. Really beautiful work. I'd love to see you use that clay more--it looks AWESOME!!

This showed up a couple of hours after I made my first isopod tank. Been dreading to watch it ever since because I knew it'd put my effort to shame. SO much inspiration though! Thanks a lot, I'm definitely going to rescape mine in the near future!

I love my isopods, so hard working and so underrated. It is so nice to see a setup just for them. I have my own in setups just to breed and live life. I too really enjoy the powder blue and dwarf whites, they are in almost all of my tanks.
