I just recently received this set up. I think the versatility is great! Just take the “Mate” section when I don’t need The whole setup. I’m old school. I only use my phone’s GPS as a backup. The large screen on my GPS is easier to get info at a glance. That additional pocket next to the phone pocket is perfect for carrying an external battery charger. Manufacturer’s now carry short USB cords 12” and shorter. A good length to run additional power thru the GPS device pocket’s grommet or slip into the zipper to power your phone.

I had the same one on my FJR. Worked great. I now use a slightly smaller Nelson Rigg on my Tenere. Really prefer the magnetic style, much easier when you gas up.

The problem I found with my version of the GPS mate thing, was that it wasn't waterproof. I tested it and wasn't over happy. I've been recommended some waterproofing stuff for it though, so when I do that, I'll retest it.

The biggest problem that I have had with tank bags is map pockets that are just a bit to small in both the length and width. That means making extra, awkward folds to get a map to fit. Can you / or anyone who owns one, tell me if a normal map, like MapArt maps, which are 8.00" wide x 9.00" long when two map panels are exposed, fit easily in this bag's map pocket ?

That is an awesome bag to keep my DSLR camera with a lens mounted during a quick stop and easy to access for nice Panorama shots while touring...Quick snack and fluid for hydration..Shopping list? CHECK!
I agree with the magnet versus the strap which is a pain...Been there and done that. NO FUN!

It's funny I just bought one of these and one of the appeals of it is I can buy a super cheap older GPS and this is perfect for that.
I already had the tank bag so that's part of it as well.

Maybe use the MP3 player pouch with power bank?
I wonder if the other compartments may overheat a device, if not well ventilated?

Way too small to fit a powerbank, at least anything of decent capacity.

Rubber hole at back of gps is for a power cord. Lol

The expansion zipper is also a compression zipper. Fill the bag with your socks and underwear, then compress the bag and rezip it.

I have own this product (not the tank bag but the gps mate) for just about 4 months now. Fare warning... you better make sure those zippers are zipped up completely. I have lost 2 phones using the gps mate almost a 3rd one 2 days ago. All are my fault, im really clumsy and i just forget the simple things. Let me explain: 1st fail-RIP Moto X Pure (edition) (flew off the gps pocket and ate tarmac, rendered unusable), 2nd fail- RIP another Moto X Pure (edition), just 2 weeks later on my way to NY, and guess what, flew off while i was on an exit ramp (rip). 2 days ago (almost fail), if i lost another phone that day I would of lost my mind. i zipped it up but not all the way b/c i forgot lol. while riding i glanced at the phone for gps and noticed my phone was halfway out the door. saved it though lol... I bought the gps mate b/c i wanted to avoid losing my phone. the first phone i lost on my bike was ASUS Zenfone 2 (RIP), I bought some cheap mount on amazon, it looked promising for a couple days. While on a trip to NY, i hit a pot hole and that phone flew off the GW Bridge right into the Hudson River. In just one year I lost 3 phones, all purchased out of pocket costing me $300 plus smh. This product is great, all my phones can only fit on the part where gps can go. i use the other pockets for portable batteries, mic wires and sound recording (zoom h1).
