I remember reading a George Orwell essay about how revolutionary leaders would often use simple, colloquial words in their speeches, to make themselves seem more representative of the wishes of the people at large, while established leaders would use flowery and esoteric language to make themselves seem more qualified and experienced than the average citizen. MLK blends both here, because he is both.
〈-thatguyoverthere no one have mixed it quite like mlk can
〈-thatguyoverthere and why Trump speaks so simply
Do you remember the name of the essay or where to find it by any chance?
Google "George Orwell Politics and the English Language". Shouldn't be too hard to find.
I think this is the same reason why Donald Trump has won, because working class liberals (not JUST white either) have grown more upset with corporatist Democrats who are ostensibly on their side than with conservative Republicans whos policies are actively harmful.
Best channel on CZcams if you ask me. As always, great video!
hands down
Been watching since 100k. Definitely has developed into one of the best youtubers
Not the best, but very good.
Nope, BlackPigeon is the best channel of CZcams.
Could you name some better ones? I'd like to see that
It will always amaze me the way you can break things down and make it sound poetic doing so.
He's an idiot. He legit thinks Trump is a genius speaker. That's who you worship.
I feel like I've just watched the part of a superhero movie where the hero discovers how to use their superpowers and display an amazing feat of superheroism. You, Nerdwriter, have discovered your purpose and place in this world as a social columnist, and I love it!
"Free at last! Free at last! Thank God almighty! We are free at last!" --- I cannot hear that amazing man speak without getting chills... every, single, time!!
The man is to America what Gandhi is to India.
MLK did to freedom what Jaws did to the ocean
Dan Levitan except ghandi was racist
Xp993 the fuck are you on about
And Gandhi had a thing for underage girls... at least most of what he said was good...
Xp993 First off its gandhi. And where the eff did you read that?
*Garfield is the best anime*

Nerdwriter for president
I can't see liberals going far in politics from now on.
Sid Which is exactly why he would never run XD
aaronaton I think you have it backwards, i can't see conservatives going very far in the aftermath of Donald Trump and the much more liberal generation X and Y
zangoat imagine his speeches ? Deep
Good subjects, good analysis! The flavour of my coffee was enhanced by an approximate factor of 1.6135.
MrOvipare a "golden" coffee, some would say! spiral on, friend!
φ
Phi(ts) well into your morning routine
It´s arguable to say that the "I have a dream"-speech is the most important one of the 20th century. It definitely is important but the most important is a bit much.
What would you say is the most important ?
possibly a presidential speech of some sort, i cant think of one off the top of my head or maybe one by churchill or hitler
Mareena Joseph presidents speech in Independence Day, it saved our planet
I don´t think there is a "most important" speech. Speeches relate to different people, to different events and importance always lies in the eyes of the beholder.
If you can't remember any of them doesn't that defeat the argument?
Hey Nerdwriter, just thought you'd like to hear that my university writing professor used this video of yours for one of our lectures while we were learning about the art of rhetoric! It's actually how I found your channel! Keep up your superb quality!
just listening to some of the audio clips from the speech gave me goosebumps. MLK had an amazing way with words
Kings rhetorical genius is that he combines poetry with practicality. and it works beautifully.
Wow-great video, with all of your great videos out there, it's hard to do so, but I may have to call this one your best. Fantastic work as always!
I cannot express well enough just how beautiful this channel is and how I wish everyone would watch it. Please don't ever stop what you're doing
This video revealed to me the brilliance and beauty of one of my favorite speech's of all time in a way I never considered before. Thanks for producing so many genuinely worthwhile videos. I really appreciate your work.
i'm fascinated by speeches like this, thank you very much!
There are a few CZcams channels which elevate the entire platform above anything that television or radio or any other medium have ever done in the past. You, my man, are one of them. Every video is a class act and a masterpiece. Fantastic work as always!
I had been waiting for you analyze I Have A Dream ever since I found your channel in fall of 2015. Thank you; the message gets better every time I see it studied.
Your channel gives me hope for humanity, thanks amigo
God damn I read the title as "How MILK composed 'I Have A Dream'"
I searched for this in the comments to see whether I'm the only one lmao
Same
i can't thank you enough for your work. English isn't my mother tongue, but your analysis of text construction are whole independente of the speakers code. it's helping me a lot recently.
The motion design in this piece is tasteful and beautiful. I applaud your color choices as well. Nice work!
I just read all the comments.
this channel and all you soulfully beautiful people are awesome. and keep being awesome because this world needs more people like this.
That was great.
Some amazing effort was put into this video. Really well done.
And here I am, listening to Nerdwriter1 flashing me back into High School life. Beautiful.
This is another exceptional video - I am so grateful to have discovered your videos - I use them in my classroom or simply share them with my friends. Thank you!
Gave me goosebumps, like always. That speech is so powerful and grandious that it sometimes brings me to tears.
I just cried my eyes out. Every word of this speech has so much weight.
If there is a God of love and justice it most certainly spoke through MLK.
Mate, your breakdown of this speech was absolutely incredible. Amazing work and thank you so much for all your effort and hard work x
I love the way you make these videos. Excellent job, as usual.
Hey Evan, would you please consider adding a transcript and closed captioning to this video and future videos? Thanks!
+
Just shows how far we've fallen in terms of making speeches that have words that matter.
Your videos are amazing! from the editing to the analysis there isn't a point where i'm not learning something but you manage to also hold my attention which is something a lot of people struggle with ahahaha. Keep up the great work! i can't wait to see what else there is to come
I watched this when you shared it on twitter and my communications professor showed it in class about an hour later. so cool! I love your videos!
It's so hard to make text come to alive (I've tried a bunch of times in my vids), yet Nerdwriter crushes it once again.
He improvised the ending? Mother of God... O.O Sam Seaborn has nothing on MLK.
Google Carey, Archibald J., Jr.
This is beautiful. Funny enough, I gave my valedictory speech early this month as the best graduating bachelors student, and used this technique, though I haven't for once actually settled down to breakdown Martin Luther's speech piece by piece, my speech actually followed this technique. Reminiscing and remembering the past, to where we are now and looking ahead into the future as we leave college. At the end everyone kept on talking about how they could relate with my speech. This is absolutely beautiful. Keep it up Nerdwriter! I always look forward to what you're going to break down next, nice one man. Love this channel.
I've been following you since your early days. I'm happy that you have come so far, I am envious of your skills and happy that such content exists.
Have you guys noticed that a lot of conservatives remembers only the "I have a dream" part of the speech, and use that against the idea of identity politics, without knowing the rest of the speech?
rodrigo pozzer true, most conservatives forget that MLK was a socialist
Well... I wouldn't say King was a socialist, but he was indeed such a radical that he was continually accused of being a Communist. Conservatives do conveniently forget the scandal in Congress when MLK Day was voted on as a federal holiday. In the 1980s, two Republicans brought a 300-page packet of documents alleging King was a Communist to Congress, and a Democrat threw the packet to the floor and stomped on it, calling it a "packet of filth."
Now, they want to whitewash King and make him a conservative icon, despite his other speeches clearly showing him to be a radical on the Left spectrum of politics.
Freedom for a whole race of people isn't a partisan issue.
BigFatCock, that may usually be correct, but here's the thing. At the end of the day, some ideologies are simply better suited to certain movements than others. Liberal ideologies are usually better suited to moving forward in society, to creating progress on certain issues, than conservative ideologies. If conservativism is heavily reliant on things like traditional attitudes and values, then that ideology is going to inevitably butt heads with movements revolving around granting people rights they didn't have before.
Because an ideology that revolves around winding the clock back is a natural opponent of a movement about change.
As Mark Twain said, "The radical of one century is the conservative of the next. The radical invents the views. When he has worn them out, the conservative adopts them."
WildWestSamurai do you agree with what the current radical liberals are saying about society?
Great video. Well put
Brought me to tears.
You put this together fantastically!
Thank You.
Keep going my friend, you're channel is a treasure.
Great video as always. Question-- How do you animate the highlighting of text in your video? I've searched and searched but can't find the proper method. Thank you!
Martin Luther King Jr. is probably my favorite historical figure in modern history.
He's the only figure who spoke such truth for good, but not under the basis of running for any office or gaining power.
Do you know Mahatma Gandhi? :)
Patrick Gandhi was a terrible human being
Screw You Google Why?
Fascist Whale
What about Obama?
Thanx so much for adding the music in the bio, I love your music taste!
This is the most brilliant channel on CZcams. Keep up the good work bro (y)
*the most important American speech of the 20th century...

I'm so glad I found your channel Nerdwriter. Thank you for this and all your videos!
It is one hell of a speech. One which never fails to give me goosebumps.
Next: How Melania Trump composes a speech
anikam13 Cmd + C and Cmd + V
She doesn’t, she has someone do it for her.
Same for MLK!
@Alexander Supertramp
How's that ?
What's the outro song? It sounds like Janelle Monae's "Can't Live Without Your Love" but it maybe is something different. Great content from Evan as always!
Jervic Perlas You're correct.
I keep waiting for you to make a video I do not like.
Amazing, as always.
We have this speech as a chapter in English in high school. I was awed by the just simply reading the speech, and still astonished today.
repetition. repetition is key.
Can you do a video on twin peaks?
thought provoking and interesting content as always
This is a video I comeback to watch every year. The way it was explained was superb!
Is it physically possible to not get goosebumps when you hear this speech?
Malcolm X please
You are fantastic Evan! Please keep doing what you do so well.
I never learnt this at school in the UK and only know of it from Film & TV. What a fantastic video on this speech. Wonderful, as always!
MLK was called a Socialist but he was a Social Democrat like Bernie Sanders advocating to stop too much economic inequality and and to bring social equality to America we should be more like Germany and the Nordic nations and not a Crony Capitalist nation.
“Be more like Germany” yes let’s implement some socialism, just like they did. Ever heard of the National Socialists? It’s a dark snowball effect.
@@markp9366 I meant social democracy you dipshit 😂
Not Nazism
@@harrychristofi6725 communism is the result of socialism. Socialism allows the government to have extreme power and is just not the right thing for when u get a knuckle head leader. This is when the government then can do whatever the hell it wants and when u have the knucklehead leader with extreme power=radical measures like genocides and shit
@@harrychristofi6725 it’s also shit for the economy because of the removal of competition and no one can help decide prices. Everyone is just some worker doing nothing which the gov decides everything for them
@@markp9366 Have you ever heard of Scandinavian countries? That’s what I wanna copy not the Soviet Union. You are such a fucking idiot the solution is a better mixed economy because if we had pure capitalism we would have more homeless people and more dead people because necessities are not guaranteed in capitalism but they are in social democracy
Which video analysing Trump's speech?
TheVodic can't find it
It's called Magician in Chief.
TheVodic How trump tweets
Agreed. I was looking and couldn't find it. I would love to watch that as well.
just go listen to any 5th grader speak, its like listening to trump
I love the KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE edit. You are having a lot of fun making these.
Your linguistic videos are always my favorite.
Why the fuck does this video has 15 downvotes?

Once would've been enough, Vince.
Because MLK was a hypocrite.
A "score" is twenty years, btw.
Bring the vlogs back! Im absolutely in love with TheNerdwriter's work.
Wonderful work. I never cease to be amazed by how brilliant that speech is.
MLK's I Have a Dream speech but every time he says One Hundred Years Ago it gets 5% faster
It has nothing to do with your video here, but you have to do something on the Netflix show "House of cards".
Wow... that was Stunning :) I love your style and your animations are beautiful :D keep it up, and thank you for your amazing work!
Your channel is the best, dude. I always appreciate your input and the thought you put into your work. I was kind of mad at myself for not being subscribed to you already, but I did it just now.
Now here is where you're wrong, Donald Trump never delivered a speech to a diverse audience, they were large, but never significantly diverse.
Malik Hossain XD
Well i'm exited as fuck for this video but then i got an advertisement for the new wolverine movie and now i'm in a big dilemma, to skip or not to skip?
I am in the process of writing my SOP for application for some masters courses in Germany and you just gave me a ton of ideas.
You rock dude.
That last phrase still gives me goose bumps! Great stuff dude great stuff!
Do an analysis of moonlight
Here's an idea: a video essay about Filthy Frank and his kind.
the visuals in this video were beautiful. great work

wow, man you are incredible. you have so much beauty to share with this world, never stop please.
How Milk Composed 'I Have A Dream'
Most of MLK's ideals were borrowed from Gandhi. Not that it's a bad thing, just stating.
Brilliant video. Simply sublime. Keep up the excellent work, Nerdwriter!!
Absolutely incredible stuff! Keep up the great work it's much appreciated!
such a beautiful analysis. I love your content. please keep recording and publishing case studies like this.
