- With Evo 2018 on the horizon, it's time to get hype once again for the largest and most prestigious fighting game tournament in the world. Catch up on the history of the scene with "I Got Next," ten years after its filming.
"I Got Next" is a documentary on the fighting game community. It follows four prominent players, Justin Wong, Ryan "Gootecks" Gutierrez, Joe "iloveu" Ciaramelli and Mike Ross through their experiences in the scene with the release of Street Fighter 4, which has caused a resurgence in the fighting game genre and a rekindling of the East Coast/West Coast rivalry that had died down in years past.

God I remember this era so vividly. Everybody was on this kick that they didn't want to work a nine-to-five job. We thought Street Fighter 4 was going to take care of them or be their Gateway into the industry. Now we are all in our mid and late 30s and getting ready to go to work in the morning. 😅
you didn't have to make it sound so depressing
Ngl you've brought so many memories for me with that comment. I was super young, 17-18 first discovering about the fgc through this doc. Still to this day traveling to events. Made some awesome friends from it all.
@@ultraheaven8968 it was like a mix of that while still being like. very home grown. like there wasn't massive stadiums and people talking about what's gonna happen in the next patch. until it happened most weren't even sure if there was gonna be a patch. tech was being figured out constantly. partially because of lacking resources and partially due to the games just being more emergent.
You didn't have to make it sound so depressing dude.
@ultraheaven8968
Ikr 😂😂
Years later this documentary is still sick!
Cool that you made this available to all. What a time capsule.
This was a blast from the past to watch. Man time goes too fast. I remember all this like it was yesterday. Now all these guys are like old legends.
This era may be the gold standard for competitive street fighter. I remember when having just 50 people at an event was hype. Then SF4 hit, and the scene exploded. I’m not sure we’ve had that same excitement since.
FR I miss these days.
This is really nostalgic. I remember living in Switzerland back when this documentary first came out, and it really got me hooked on SFIV for a good while. Thanks for making it!
Just watched this for the first time. Loved it. Thanks for putting it on CZcams. A great insight that I didn't have.
Mike looks like his mother. God bless him and his family. May she rest in paradise. :)
Bro, thank U for this documentary.
The years pass by and this piece of art gets a new meaning, seeing all this leyends, where they where at 14 years ago.
I'm very grateful that this exists.
Back here to get hype for some SF6 EVO moments.
hey we watched this on majin obama's stream today and I dropped everything I had planned to take the journey with everyone. It was beautiful! I didn't expect to get in my feelings so much but the nostalgia and the real shit.... so good thank you for this
Watching the segment with Mike Ross and gootecks made me both happy and sad. Especially now with everything that Mike Ross was saying back in the day about esports. Heartbreaking man smh.
Thank you for sharing this video, Ian! It reminds me of all the hype surrounding Street Fighter IV after its launch. It is also pretty amazing to see so many familiar faces and venues and think about how much has changed over the years.
First time watching the whole documentary, I've only seen clips here and there, thank you again for making this public
Mike Ross in his hoodie cracks me up lol this is Mike Ross when he was hungry 😂
Thank you for this! Like, the original version of this is not as long or even THIS awesome. This is great!
not sure i've ever actually seen this in its entirety. what a classic, thanks for uploading
The video was a learning experience for a zoomer like me. Tysm
Great doc, really captures that era
Thanks for uploading this!
I first watched this back in ‘09 and it really got me into watching the competitive scene and it’s something I’ve been wanting to watch again for a long time.
Seeing LI Joe with hair is so strange, lol.

Thanks for the upload. I really enjoyed this.
Dude i only found this now. Wish more people can see it. Im all about fgc documentaries and stuff like that. Always gets me hyped and inspired even if its an old upload!
2019. I remember when this first came out. I was at the tournament where most of this was filmed. Great memories.
It was much more hype back in those days. The pop offs were legendary and the rivalries were intense. Whether it was NorCal vs socal or west vs east, shit was hype.
Excellent film. Always great to go back to this. 🤘
RIP Mike “There’s no cross-ups in spelling” Ross
Thank god
Man Justin knowing what time it is with wrestling made me like him more
thanks for sharing this!
Watching this again made me smile.
Wong so good he had to play with bangs over one eye back on the day...
if not for this video I would never have known who long island Joe/Iloveyoujoe was, so happy to see him at EVO 2022 this year
Pog tecks
Goddamn the music was great.
great video bro
Saw this in 2012 and it really got me balls deep in the FGC
Even here in the future that is 2020, jump back fierce is still winning matches.
TYSM
Mike Ross wanted Street Fighter on ESPN he got it... now he's pissed off with the FGC. LOL
"Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it"
Mike “Leave alone but wish me happy bday on my bday” Ross.
He’s pissed because sf is a hot pile of trash and e sports ruined the essence of what the fgc was.
23:25 lol seeing this gameplay is crazy. I can’t believe that’s top 16 right there.
Hey, Ian! I'm so grateful you uploaded this classic, but is there any location to listen to the soundtrack? I absolutely love the score and would be so so so happy to listen to this music whenever I need hype shit to happen in my life.
3:46 DSP cameo.
Deadass
Was looking for this comment. Thought so
only thing this documentary is missing is EVO Moment #37
Mike Ross looking high as fuck!
Thanks for uploading this it was such a great watch. But I have to know, is there anywhere I can get the soundtrack?
We went from this, to Mike Ross hating the FGC and Gootecks become a crazy conspiracy nut. What a world
You either die a hero,or live long enough to see yourself become a villain
Gootecks was right
@@Cephalitis About what?
Gootecks was right
@@sebulba69 about what?
oh shit its the pogchamp
Gootecks wasn’t wrong, him and Mike Ross made it work for a long time. Used to love Cross Counter. Sad all good things end
21:50 Very interesting how much his opinion has changed since this doc. :(
:(. Capcom did him dirty
Fgc gem
anyone know the track at 52:44 ? cant find the soundtrack online.. dope doc.
What's the name of that song playing in the background when they started the 5v5?
Mike Ross looks so baked.
3:45 it's the guy
Nowadays we have netcode issues.
why did the original music change ian :(
Justin Wong: "I don't want to work like a 9-to-5 job, because I feel like that's the most boringest life ever."
Boringest? STAY IN SCHOOL KIDS. lmao
but he's a millionaire now
You're a dumbass. He quit that job as Nvidia QA engineer. He's on Echo Fox salary now. Don't be jealous just because no one wants to pay you for your shitty 8 bit music.
west coast is sigma free
Goddamnit it had to start off with gootecks
Ikr
Stay mad snowflakes
the music isn't the same as it's original release...that had really good music, this shit sucks.
1st!
Gootecks was right
about what exactly?
@maximilian3394 about Bill gates, the vaccine, covid, ect
Wow you could tell Arturo sucked lol
Lol Mike Ross saying he wanted to see Street Fighter on ESPN, to now crying about FGC is "too esports". What a hypocrite.
seeker0587
He put his heart and soul into the scene, and it turns out that it looks way different that he thought it would.
you are whats wrong with the fgc. when he said “too esports” you dont even comprehend what he talked about. you a tool and an idiot lol
sad fgc is dead, even if it aint, most of these dudes are old now so it sucks
It's not dead but it's sterile. Doesn't have the same energy anymore.
SFV SUCKS!
