- We're back with another episode of Great Moments in Fighting Game History! Today we are covering the greatest Evolution grand finals of all time (in my opinion!) Evo 2009, Street Fighter 4 finals, between Daigo Umehara and Justin Wong! We'll be breaking down the history between these 2 players, the characters they're picking, and the strategies and adaptations that take place between Daigo's Ryu and Jwong's Rufus, Abel, and Balrog.
Make sure to subscribe to Justin Wong on CZcams: / @jwonggg

FGC history content is some of my favorite content on CZcams. This series is amazing.
Word
I wish more people would do this. The old games had so many good moments!
Can't agree more. Check out blaz blue 2014 moments.
Sorry was 2014 not 13. My bad
True
i agree, he should do more
13:15 The crowd were chanting "Let's go Justin!"
He was doomed to lose from that point.
People need to stop saying that when Justin plays it’s become a self fulfilling prophecy
@@leoalcaraz6153 Legends say, Mr.Wong is still traumatized to this day. After the great Daigo wars.
It like they are cursing him.
i wonder if they were doing that on purpose
I like how Daigo seems so calm and respectful even with everyone against him.
I like and respect the incredible contrast: Justin, excitedly hyping shit up after every improbable victory; Daigo stoic and calm, with an impenetrable poker-face. Makes me think of Mugen and Jin from Samurai Champloo.
Pretty easy when you're a living legend and have literally nothing to prove.
Will you care if the world is against you and you already know you’re going to win?
this is why people like him, like me I really learn his mental thinking while playing game, no need to be a cocky and an angry idiot whether u win or lose a game...just be a calm person, unlike that stupid Wong, I really hate people react like this, what's he doing go joy to the crowd? thought he definitely win?
You act like there was something he could do. He had no choice...
"how do you know it's an ume shoryu?"
"if it hits, it's ume; if it's blocked, it's flowchart"
Scrubby players normally mash Dp when they are negative (during strings, wake up, or even meaty).
"Ume-shoryu" is using Dp as a neutral tool. Both times he used it, he caught Justin pressing Fierce.
@@brunocampos7199 I know dude, it's a joke
@@rickyfajar5190 my bad.
@@brunocampos7199 same difference
This comment is underrated
"What's the mix? He just goes for a meaty."
me when I play any fighting game
Super safe approach depending on the meaty.
😂😂😂
In those days, Justin's talent was his mastery of multiple complex characters, able to swap them as needed to fit the opponent and situation, and use them more proficiently than other pros with their mains.
But Daigo's talent was his grandmastery of one simple character, and could make that lone character feel like multiple complex opponents in the same match.
and it is interesting to see that 20 years after moment 37, Daigo start to enjoy all sorts of characters when doing SF6 online, Justin however stay with Chun-Li all the way to every tournament he joins, the most insane part is both of them are still top tier player, normally you don't get to be that good for that long, I guess these two just build a little differently with others. 😂
20 years? This was 14 years ago
@@jamescollins5870 He said 20 years after Evo Moment 37, not this match up.
Wasn't planning on watching a 36 minute Street fighter tournament video. but you chauffeured me through solidly with your commentary and it was beautiful.
Dude i just realized it was a 36 minute video wtf
Same to me 😆
It felt like a 5 min video
Dude the way he hypes parts of the game without even being hyperactive is talent.
Right
hey jim, please please PLEASE more of this series
Yessir
@@jim-mf3dv spark vs Lord Knight from blazblue was a great one. Or Mike Z's bottom tier Tager destroying those top tier NU13 players. Just a suggestion
idk why he stopped
Who the hell is jim??
I love your usual dbfz content, but these best moments in fighting game history are by far my favorite videos. You just do such a good job at keeping my attention throughout the whole video. Great content, keep it coming!! Oh and Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!!
I second this. Love these.
The chair swap myth
Agree
yeah, you build a good story
"You can't can't whiff punish a fireball"
UI Goku smiling from dbfz
Gotta love japan vs us - ryu vs balrog even the skins are matching lol
i thought Justin is a "Chinese"
@@gyrenrockz He's American.
@@icecreambrainz8726 american citizen yeah but is he not chinese?
@@gyrenrockz he's as Chinese as Balrog is African. What's your point, unless we have a native American playing everybody has a country of origin. Him being Chinese don't mean he isn't American...
@@gyrenrockz If J. Wong is an "American citizen, but actually Chinese" then every white American is an "American citizen, but actually European". Most Americans have European heritage, but that doesn't mean they're European. So just because Justin has Chinese heritage doesn't mean he's Chinese.
Damn, Justin really put those stars and stripes on and tried his heart out to bring it home for America, but the beast stayed unbeatable. This is a match I've heard about but never given much thought but when you lay out the history and play out the drama like this beat by beat it ascends the match to new heights for all of us folks who weren't there to experience it live. Love these videos and how they enrich fighting game history.
good comment bro!
Man.... I was a Daigo fanboy during this era but looking back, I really wish Justin won that set. I'm really glad you highlighted this for people who might not know of it. It is an incredible set both in gameplay and historic value, and poses the "What if....?" where, in a universe with no arcade release head start, would Justin have had enough to win this one at least?
Used to be a fanboy as well smh. Glad the early release isn't a thing anymore
As a 09er whos put fighting games on the back burner for parenthood, listening to your FGC history videos is really nostalgic. Youre great at bringing these moments back alive. Ive always thought you would make an excellent FGC commentator.
Request: Cover the moneymatch between Clockw0rk and Golden Boy Neo around 9 years ago. The hype and build up was phenomenal. Not that anyone would have to pull your arm to talk about Marvel 2
I thought it was going to be the match of 'EVO moment 37' only to be surprised by this amazing match, amazing commentary! thank you for this video, i was massively entertained and huuuuuge respect to Justin for pushing Daigo to his limits all the way till the very end and win with the smallest of margins!!
Fun fact: they both wearing their flag colors on their characters, also characters nationalities are the same as the players
Only their race is different
@@Michael.Eddington what do you mean?
They are both humans.
@@321tiempo3 What, that’s their species yeah. I don’t think there’s many dolphins or dogs who could be trained to play SF
@@Michael.Eddington lol XD
The thing about Daigo and Justin is, Justin has the Wong factor when he falls behind, but.......... Daigo has Beast mode, which allows him to download and adapt faster if the matches goes way to long, and because Justin had to use his Wong factor early, Daigo, just adapted with Beast mode before Justin can win.
Dood !!! That's some Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry thing going in there.
10/10, I would read this manga
this is your brain on weeb
One thing I love to see Daigo do is adapt to his opponents. Long sets with Daigo are some of the most entertaining videos in the fgc.
Ready to look at some banger matches!!
Ugh yes this series is back! Probably my favorite thing you do in them is explain, in non condescending ways, why certain moments or mechanics are important. As someone who enjoys watching but doesn't know how to play, it allows me to put myself in someones shoes (someone who knows all this stuff) and get just as hype. Keep it up sir. This was a great Christmas gift. Happy holidays!
2:18 Top 8: 5 Chun-Lis and 2 Yuns. Third Strike meta in a nutshell. lol
😂😂😂😂😂 I know right? had huge respect to them pros competing with characters like Q
I love the language of SF. 2 players, worlds apart, exchanging technical banter to come to a poetic conclusion 🔥
So perfect that Justin is using the American character while Daigo uses the Japanese one
So cool to see Justin giving some info on the match, i like that you do this as it shows some awesome moments in the FGC.
I don’t play fighting games, but I do play strategy games-I loved your concise explanation of the “big picture” strategies at play, helped me understand what was happening much better! Please more, thank you in advance!
I’ve never once thought of myself as a fan of competitive fighting games but I absolutely love your commentary and breakdown of the videos you make.
I love it when you do these feature match breakdowns with context. These are 100% my favorite videos from you. Keep it up man, your knowledge and passion for the genre come out so much while delivering expert info and hype moments is just too good a combo not to watch. A must-click every time.
I am one of those who never understood how video games could be considered a sport. I like sports, and I played fighting games like street fighter casually in arcades when I was young. But I had no idea how technical the games I played could be. Your explanations of what’s going on go a long way in helping me have such a good time with these videos and recognizing that yeah, games can be just as intense and technical as any sport. This match had me on the edge of my seat.
What a Christmas gift! This series is soo dope. Looking forward to more!
Please do more of these retrospective videos, your regular content is good, but this is just such an unbelievable step up, it’s hard not to want more.
Yo, I love this series. Was worried we weren't gonna get more cause its been a while , but a great Christmas eve gift
You know a moment is legendary when it causes you to tear up😌
Please do perhaps the most high level match in all of SFIV, Daigo and Momochi at Stunfest 2015, at some point, please. These analyses are fantastic.
This match in 2009 was my first intro to the fighting game community, from a recommendation by CZcams. I'd say I became an obsessive fan of fighting games from that point on. Thanks for letting me relive this with fresh commentary.
SF4 2009 was so epic man
I haven’t played fighting games in 20+ years but am now hooked on these fighting game history videos.
I agree!
You are a fantastic commentator and analysts!!! These kind are my favorite videos of yours. Please do A LOT more like this!!!
Finally! These are so good thanks for making another one!
God, that was so sick to watch. Thanks for this one
Love this series! Thank you, JM.
Fantastic insights, and thanks for the backstory! I had just watched the raw Justin versus Daigo video of this yesterday, so this was a cool follow up to that.
Watching this in anticipation of EVO2022 in a couple hours, but... Justin going to Balrog felt like the REAL "USA vs Japan" match had begun. You could feel it in the air of the crowd with their "USA" chants in tow as Justin literally puts an entire country on his back. The symbolism of such a sight is one of the things that makes this EVO GF incredibly memorable.
Even to this day, America had not won SF4 on the world stage of EVO. They haven't done it for SF5... yet (go iDom!). In fact, the last time USA took home 1st place in Street Fighter... was over 10 years ago.

Jmcrofts I love your commentary and how you explain terminology! Very helpful for newbies
What a great video. Thank you for all of the FGC content you put out.
Really missed these videos, thanks for working on this type of content again!
hell yeah, another greatest moments episode. I love these
Again, LOVE these FGC commentary and you breaking the nuances of the matches and the techniques down. Keep up the good work and looking forward to these whenever you have time to churn them out.
thank you for this video. I sprainged my ankle and your videos and fightcade 3rd strike are getting me through the pain. it's a great distraction!!!
The way you explain all this stuff makes sense to people who don't even play fighting games. I love it
Dude, keep up the good work. This series is amazing. Your commentary especially makes it awesome, so much insight
I love JWong but The Beast will always be my boi. He's the guy my son grew up cheering for. This was a great set from a great pair of competitors.
Thank you for making these videos! You can tell all the work you put in them. They are awesome for us people that love fighting games but haven't been following the history of the genre.
This and the east vs. west MVC2 breakdown have been my favorites so far. Keep up the good work!
I’m happy I got to see this for the first time with you narrating the match, your knowledge and experience is really insightful. Thanks for making this match new to me. 👍
Great matchup! Great commentary! Thank you for such an enjoyable video.
Just rewatched some of your earlier coverage of fighting game history, hyped for this one too!
I got a bit late into fighting games but seeing these moments is always a pleasure, in combination with the explanation its a good view into all Fighting games. Especially with the interview of Justin Wong adds a nice touch!
I don't ever play Street Fighter (other than SF2 many years ago), but this was super entertaining to watch.
My favorite finals was KOF13 2013 Reynald vs Woo, with Reynald in losers going down 0-2, then winning 6 in a row. The biggest momentum shift of all time for sure.
Favourite evo moment for many. Bala vs madkof a year ago was not bad either
KoF13 was the absolute shit, reallly upset that 14 never seemed to hit the same heights. Here's hoping 15 brings the heat.
Yeah man that and Evo 2012 Grand Final b/w Bala and MadKof was also an amazing match one of the best Evo Grand Finals.
All Reynald did was pick Ex-Kyo and then he went into UI mode once Goodbye Esaka started playing in the background.
KBR vs Fchamp in winter brawls was a bigger momentum shift imo
man i miss the 2009-2014 Evo era. It was magical and I’m glad i got to watch them on Twitch
This series of videos has been amazing. Can't wait for the next one!
For what It’s worth man, I love your commentary and love how in depth you get,. Keep doing what you’re doing
My favorite EVO finals of all time. Great commentary!!
So happy to see this come back. It's how I discovered your channel in the first place. Happy Holidays!
jm, i love this series man. please never stop doing these. thank you so much
I don't know anything about SF but the way you explain the intricate tech makes the video much more enjoyable to watch. Thank you for the excellent commentary and sharing something that I would normally not watch.
really love this content. love how you explain the details on what each players do. pro players might be able to decipher the moves, but for newbies or non-players like me, we don't really know what is going on. and thank you for explaining what DP FADC is; really learned a lot. Please make more of these kind of content. Thanks!
I've already watched 3-4 of your videos, such a pleasure. Fantastic commentary, easy to understand even for a casual like me.
Oh yeah, I've waited for this...
Dang this may be your best video yet. I have always been a fan since your FighterZ videos started (and still excitedly keep up with those) but this Fighting Game History content is next level. Such a good watch. Also, incredible job successfully incorporating the star Justin Wong himself, truly the icing on the cake
I’m so happy I came across your channel man. Honestly you’re the only reason I gave street fighter a chance after watching diagos classic parry. Love the content man please keep it up
I hate how much I love your commentary. I could listen to you speak for a long time. I want to thank you. Thank you.
This series is genius and the analysis is absolutely fantastic
Love seeing this in my recommended, one of my favorite series for sure
I absolutely love your channel, jm.
my favorite of all time is Lil Majin vs JDCR in Tekken 7 EVO 2018. Lil Majin being the only American player to make into the finals playing against JDCR a dominant player was fantastic. Also the power of the crowd, shouting Lil Majin's name just gave his match so much more hype behind it.
that wasnt an EVO finals match.
SF4 is so much more exciting to watch than SF5. I hope SF6 will be much better.
This was an amazing video. Thank you and Merry Christmas!
Excellent video. I really enjoyed it. I've been a fan for a long time, and it's been a real pleasure to see your career and channel grow. I credit you and Dotodoya for keeping me motivated and interested in DBFZ. Keep it up!
I love this series so much!!! Thanks for the Christmas gift!
Keep this videos up, I love them. Yesturday I watched the umvc3 greatest villain video. Witch I've seen like 4 times now.
Really enjoy this series of videos!
Thank you for making them.
so much memories , fchamp vs kbr , daigo vs justin ... you keep bringing back good old memories bro
Happy new year !
One word: Amazing. Love the break down of this video.
Great video. I've been going back through your archives to watch them all and definitely love this series. Keep up the great work.
I really enjoyed watching this video. Love your passion. Keep it up!
I really love this series bro, Great work.
Aahh, Justin and Daigo were such babies!! Great trip down memory lane, thanks dude
Well love this dude’s content as a whole, earned a subscriber
Man, your enthusiasm is very affective! Subscribed!
Wow you really make it come alive. Thanks!
This was a great rundown of how the game mechanics work! Thanks man!
I missed this series. Love it!!
Having played since SF I and 2: The World Warrior hit the arcades, it still warms my heart to see the evolution of the FGC turn into a thriving, respected profession that gets the historical play by play moments normally honoring champions like Muhammad Ali or Michael Jordan.
you're such a fit for this kind of content. it's honestly so good it should be pay per view! keep it up
Wow 21:57 trying to punish a fireball jump with a super fireball. I'm glad they took that out
Whoop! So glad you did another one of these!
i really never underestand fighting games, thank you so much for this videos, so inspiring!
Your FGC videos are my favorite (I only got into the community 2ish years ago) and the production value of this video really shows. Great job!
Awesome match digest!! Looking forward to more of these!!
