This video certainly hits differently with news on the Rust set.
I saw this recommended, and immediately came looking for this comment
I honestly thought this came out after the Rust incident.
Based off of this video, there was so many ways to prevent such a mishap.
I did a video about the Rust incident.
@@Vesperitis I did a video about the Rust incident
The editing and tone of this feels so cozy like the early 2010s era of CZcams.
Thanks!! I’ll take it!
if it ain't broke
you mean... low quality unprofessional videos
@@koffing2073 I’m a Prop Master, not a cinematographer. But I do have some good stuff to share. I’m learning and maybe I’ll be 2011 quality soon!!
@@koffing2073 u don't need big production value. just a guy talking about his career and passion :)
So excited for longer videos. Not only can we learn more about the history/deep dives on props. We can get long-form puns.
experts explaining things is so educational!!!!!! i love it nom nom nom
O the longus pungus. I like longer videos better too.
In full agreement with you!
Scott, Prop & Droll! Very interesting topic, thanks for the insider's information. Those replicas look amazing!
I'm looking forward to more long-form videos, if that's at all possible.
I think you mean puns with… long range
Someone in Hollywood who actually understands what he’s talking about with firearms and isn’t a trainer. Respect.
Thanks Rick!! Appreciate it.
even has proper trigger discipline
@@chasedavidson2855 Thanks! I didn’t actually think about it. Glad I did it right!!

@@ScottPropandRoll love your videos Scott. Always a bright part of my day
CZcams has a wicked sense of recommending this to me after the news, if only all people were as professional as this guy
Yeah, this one should blow up soon.
Thank you. I did one about the Rust incident. It’s really unbelievable that this could happen.
@@ScottPropandRoll can I take a guess and say the lady that was in charge of the prop guns tried screwing in a blank adapter that was a size or 2 smaller than the weapon needed?
Edit: NVM, just watched the other video. Did not know it was a live round.
@@dizzthenibbler4070 No. it was a revolver. It would not require a plug.
The news?
Excited for longer content, behind it 100%
Thanks so much!!
I was watching the shorts this morning thinking these need to be longer and here I am!!
Definitely
No way. Keep them short. People are busy.
@Yoshioka I'm serious. And I was already "speaking for myself"
Firearm nut here, I'm very happy to see all of your firearms cycle when you pull the trigger. The biggest urk when I watch something like TWD and the damn guns don't cycle. Or when they call a magazine a clip...
Most of those didn't cycle as far back as reality though and I don't really understand what "recoil" he's talking about! ;)
nah you expect John Wick to call a mag a mag not some civilian who knows very little about guns.
I remember there was an episode of blue bloods and the bad guy was pointing his gun in the direction of the camera and you could clearly see it was a two piece mold with a seam and solid barrel
The magazine is like Vogue, and the clip is like the article you clip out
Or say "bullets" when they mean cartridges, or "ammo", or even "rounds". Example: "My gun has a clip that holds 9 bullets"!
Wow! I really like this one! Ultra condensed info...like you're teaching a master class. Thank you for the interesting content!
Thanks!! I’ll get more details into future vids . I’m so used to doing TikToks it’s weird doing long form!!
It's awesome to pickup little tips that amateurs can use to make a couple props, and let's be real, no one is gonna try to start a business and compete. The only way to open a prop house nowadays is to either buy one that's been running for years, or spend the next decade scouring thrift shops and garage sales across the country and even if you did manage to amass the sizable collection of utterly random items needed to run a shop like this, no one is gonna jump ship from the guys they've worked with for years that they know can reliably get them whatever they need, no matter how random.
@@ParadigmUnkn0wn LOL, I'm an education junkie. I've taken a few Master Classes for enjoyment and self fulfillment without ever intending to make it a career.
@@boblablablaw6677 I'm the same. I'll probably never make a single prop, but I enjoy seeing how they're made.
I'm just saying it's nice that he's sharing the info, and it doesn't hurt him in any way. If anything, it's free advertising to potential customers.
"something's gonna be fired, hopefully it's not going to be you."
Why do I feel that's the motto of gun prop wranglers in general? :P
I used to work for an airsoft company that sold adapter kits that let you add your own silicon oil to a standard tank of camping propane and adapt it to use with airsoft.
The product was popular because it saved players so much money compared to branded "greengas", but it was crazy how many players didn't believe that greengas was propane.
Our owner eventually took a slew of the most popular greengas brands to a lab to be tested and published the results.
All that to say, it's cool to see that someone in a different industry knows the score regarding greengas.
:p
I'd love to hear your take on what happened with Alec Baldwin's recent incident.
Poor safety protocol.
YOU DON'T SAY?!?
This couldn’t have been recommended at a more appropriate time…
I bet this video will get a lot of attention with recent events.
Contrary to many other posters, I believe this video aged like fine wine.
A lot of the blanks used on productions like Band of Brothers, 13 hours, Lone Survivor come from a guy named Joe Swanson. He’s kind of a legend in re-enacting circles because he makes cinematic blanks that give excellent report and flash. However his rounds can be too hot for the rifles, I had a friend blow the front sight off his weapon because of the pressure taking the blank adapter and front sight off the muzzle.
Making them shoot reliably is a challenge as blanks are generally more dirty than normal ammunition and they require more cleaning and lubrication. It’s definitely more art than science.
Joe Swanson is a legend!!
As soon as I heard about Alec Baldwin I came straight to Scott's channel for some type of explanation on how someone died and another injured from a prop gun.
Western and other period films tend to be more likely to use real firearms (firing blanks too of course, but any debris in the barrel could act as a projectile) instead of replicas or prop guns (in this case I'm referring to the type of prop guns showcased in the video not any gun, real or otherwise, used as a prop).
He's got a video about it up now
It even has a little title card, that is so cute. Can't wait to see more of this
And here he gets killed by a TITLE CAAAAARD!
A full video with an intro and graphics and everything. Very nice. I'm looking forward to a lot of good more prop content.
Love the military shows with a stack of blank brass at the feet of the hero, with his belt fed dropping more as you watch.😂
Rambo?
When he stated what he did about blank ammunition and Cost, I instantly thought of starship troopers and the subsequent hell it was to have the rifles made (according to the guy who made them at any rate)
Your videos, short or long, are super fascinating! Props is something that I'm sure not a lot of people think of when they see movies and shows, and I think it's because guys like you do such a great job that the audience has no reason to question what they're seeing. Thanks for all the great videos Scott!
Ah CZcams coming through with its sick sense of humour once again

Posted a month before the Baldwin shooting. Taking topical to a new level.
I really like the longer form content. Shorts are great and have their place but CZcams has traditionally been a place for lengthy videos. Great stuff. You did a bang up job on this one!
Thanks!! I enjoyed doing it. My CZcams shorts finally started getting some traction so I figured I’d give it a shot!
Absolutely love the longer video format, personally TikTok has ruined videos in my opinion. So please keep up the good work and keep the longer format around!
Thank you. My daughter just loves Tik-Tok she says its better than CZcams videos. CZcams videos you have to look hard and deep to find one that you could actually follow. (My opinion only)
People making Tik-Tok videos are just a bunch of sheep with camera phones. (My opinion only)

You are my new favorite content creator. It's refreshing to see a pro talk about their trade. Social media needs more content like this.
This is great! You even make cheesy puns! Love these videos and look forward to more. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Watched this video a few weeks ago, revisited to see how the comment section was doing today…..
I'm sure others have commented on this already, but I'm happy to see a props guy who actually knows what hes talking about! And the trigger discipline even on fake guns is a big plus!
It must feel so weird to actually aim prop guns at people on set after learning proper gun safety.
Yikes, your comment was before the incident - tell that to Alec Baldwin :/
Only for some people.
Aged well
Yes, please more longer videos. This is great.
UNUS
Thank you! I’ll get the hang of it!!
For lower budget projects, co2 pellet revolvers are really good (if they make sense for your project). You can simulate firing them even without co2. And with a revolver, you don't have to worry about adding a shell ejection visual effect.
This video is about to blow up
I really like the longer format. You're very direct and do a great job of breaking things down quickly and incredibly concisely, I've never had to listen to something twice to keep up and I really big all the behind the scenes stuff. Aside from you of course is there anyone I should follow or any suggested reading on prop work?
Glad you did a long video instead of splitting into 5 one-minute-shorts.
Thanks!! I’ve been doing TikToks so long I’m trying to adjust my delivery of information. I’ll get there!
Can't imagine why this video is trending all of a sudden...
The longer videos are so awesome!! Very informative and fun to watch. I can’t wait for more of them!!
This is easily the coolest fucking channel on CZcams.
It’s perfect, he’s just an average dude, with tons of experience laying out the complexities of something that is universally known, but not universally understood.
Honestly this channel makes movies even more incredible for me.
This comment makes it all worthwhile! Seriously, I appreciate you saying this!! I really enjoy doing these. I’m glad y’all seem to like them.
Been said by many here, but would love some more of this 'longer' content. Really interesting to watch.
Something tells me the views of this video will shoot through the roof (given the news).
I'm sorry for all involved - and for my pun. Everyone on set should always practice pun safety even if they are just actors and they have been given a pun in hand by someone else.
Very informative. I like the brief bites. Factual, not overly wordy. I walk away with something I didn't know before, and you didn't ramble on and on to get there. Thank you!
Always love the Dirty Harry modded Smith and Wesson model 29 revolver with the welded cylinders and used size 11 caps made for cap and ball revolvers.
If only you had been there to properly supervise
Alec Bauldwin could have been doing with watching this video....
I'd love to see how you set up the scenes on a movie set and have longer videos and deeper dives on how the props are made and works. Very educational.
Fledgling filmmaker in NM here. I am absolutley loving these. I subscribed. Duuuuuuuuude, you are making this soooooo much easier. Thank you soo much. I have learned more from you than I did on Preacher, Rattwater massacre - I love westerns, where I was able to learn most of what I know on making films.
I’m glad they’re helpful!!
This is a channel I didn’t know I needed, now I kinda want to be a prop master
I came straight here after hearing about the Alec Baldwin incident. Can you please do a follow up video explaining firearm safety, as well as you think may have gone wrong on that set?
Yes! Longer format and landscape orientation! Two things I've really missed lately. Excellent video
The content you provide is top notch but its your attitude and who you are that catches ppls attention. Please don’t change you’re an awesome dude.
This aged very well
There’s a certain type of muzzle flash I’ve always wondered about. There’s no flash, it’s more like gas coming out of the gun. The scene in Last Crusade where Indy shoots all the Nazi guards after his dad calls him Jr is the first and best example I can think of. Do you have any experience with those? because that’s the type of look I want for my films.
There are some possibilities.
1. The gun is a cap firing model. These are manufactured by Japanese toy gun companies MGC, Tanaka, etc etc. Wich are loaded with bullet casings containing a small pyrotechnics charge. These eject the casings and a puff of smoke exits the gun, depending on the model on the muzzle, too. Normally these are not front venting.
2. A special kind of blanks is used. I think if they had used typical movie blanks the whole screen would have been muzzle flash.
3. It was coincidence and the shutter was always closed when a blank was fired, but I doubt it.
There is a video by forgotten weapons about movie firearms, he shows different types of blanks and barrel plugs. Larry Vickers has also some videos, but I can't remember if he spoke about the technical stuff or just showed some famous movie weapons.
I hope I could help you a bit.
(just edited a bit for translation mistakes)
Might be a pressure wave you're seeing of hot combusting air pushing against cooler outside air. Blank firing guns do still produce heat and pressure, and can still be fatal at very close range.
@@marshallgibson89 im high rn but it could be over gassed green gas ar so that the gas comes out the barrel i dont have much experience with green gas ars just aeg
@@phoneusandfroboof829 When have you seen an AR15 in an Indiana Jones movie? You must be high as a kite. ;) The gun, which was used as an example, is an MP40 in the third Indiana Jones movie. I don't think that at the time shell ejecting green gas guns where a thing, the smoke would also look different with a gas gun. Powder smoke is blueish in color, green gas is more whitish.
@@marshallgibson89 they make gas blow back replicas of a lot of guns
Definitely down for longer videos, much larger volume of information about specific topics, this is great!

You should do a break down of what you think just happened on the filming of “rust”
He doesn't wanna be blacklisted from the industry. Not gonna happen.

@@OnlyVocals oh really? we‘ll see about it.
He may not want to do that for the time being. It's possible he could be called for expert testimony when things make their way through the legal system.
@@dustykeele Yeah he's already done a video on it.
Here after the Baldwin's incident. 😔
This has become my new favorite channel these days. Can't wait for more videos, long or short!
Love that Blooper at the end. Everyone gets their "tang tungled" now and then.
To add on, there's also simulation guns which shoot oxy-propane flames out the muzzle.
They went bug-nutty with those back in the day in action movies.
Can you do a video about what happened involving the incident on the set of "Rust" when more info is made available?
In Wild West style movies they use real guns to show as much authenticity. The prop guy who was in charge of the gun probably put a real bullet in the gun by accident or someone else did. Either way the prop guy will probably be charged with manslaughter. Other than that I cannot see what else information Scott could give.
@@temporaryname2467 in Brandon Lee's case, it was a prop bullet jammed in the barrel like a "Squib load" that can happen off set too. The bullet jams in the barrel and firing a second shot can dislodge it or blow the gun up
Glad to see you give this topic a shot, but you did seem to barrel through the details. I will aim to keep watching for more great content!
Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. More long form content Scott!
To those coming after the Baldwin incident: A prop is any property used on a movie set, whether real or fake. "Prop" does _not_ mean "fake", though a prop _can_ be fake. A real gun is a prop gun the moment it's used on a movie set, in the same way a real toaster is a prop toaster the moment it is used on a movie set.
Of course, in a dinner scene a prop spoon is incapable of holding soup...
@@BogeyTheBear lol
I love the blooper, hope you keep those at the end :)
Very fun, quick, and educational! Loved all of the expertise you showed and explained about your craft and the industry. Looking forward to more videos from you, this was my first!
This is the first non-short video I've seen from this channel, and I love it. I've been a fan of guns for a long time and the fact that this is the first non-short video I've watched in this channel just makes it a lot better.
I absolutely love your vids, this longer format is lust what i was asking for!
Great job!
Glad you like!!
You know who brought me here
I came for the props, stayed for the explanations, and subscribed for the puns.
The troubleshooting section... fucking fantastic.
I would love for you to do a deep dive on prop weapon accidents
As a gun nerd, CG needs to work on disguising the fill ports on magazines and the BB nozzle...things...on the bolt carrier. It's a pretty common mistake that's really noticeable since you kinda expect to see the bolt face and instead have some little gassy nipple on the cool shot of the hero working to bolt of his M16 or whatever. It's like directors really like showing that dust cover pop open and the CG dudes don't bother making the internals a little less airsofty and it ruins the shot.
It'd be easy to out some blue or green tape over them so that it reminds the vfx guys to deal with it.
Who else is here to learn more about prop guns and why/how they can be lethal after what happened with Alec Baldwin?
What he fired wasn’t a blank. For it to have gone through the first person and still injure the person behind, it would have to be a live round.
Not saying he meant to, but after a few days of more info coming out it’s clear there was a significant amount of negligence and gun safety violations that led up to this incident.
This is the coolest video I've stumbled upon in a while. Just solid concise knowledge I didn't know I wanted to know.
Awesome that you are making longer videos! Looking forward to learning about this interesting trade!

Ya know I will always respect even the channel name is a pun.
This was great. Definitely appreciating the long form content!
This was great, thoroughly entertaining and educational. Quickly becoming one of my favorite CZcams channels.
Thanks. I’ll keep at it!!
Thank you very much. You have good content, while mixing fun and educational information.
It's a bit like the extra material for a DVD edition of Terminator T2 I have. James Cameron did fill the extra materials with 10 hours of film school from start to end. How to find a director, financing, location scouting etc and all the way to deciding how many cinemas to roll the release on and (at that time) how many copies to make of the film in 35mm and 70mm format.
Knowing more about what happens behind the scenes and before the scenes can even be filmed makes viewing movies a much better experience.
One thing I would like to know more about when it comes to prop weapons is how they are handled between takes. Blanks have no bullets but they are still very much dangerous if someone makes the mistake of assuming they are toys.
Ooh, I think I can really get used to these longer videos!
You did an amazing job with this video keep up the great work!! I would love to see more full length videos like this one!!!
Scott, I watch a lot of your videos. You're so knowledgeable about your field! Yet, you explain things in simple language. The puns are, of course, icing on the cake.
Any kid who is interested in films and film-making could easily understand what you're talking about.
Finally, these videos could be useful in recruiting the next generation of prop experts
So, kudos all round!
Really cool video Scott, I just always assumed people used to be real weapons that fire blanks
Have really enjoyed watching your content and can’t wait for more of these longer videos! I was also wondering how do they make bullet holes on glass/cars/buildings etc. during scenes, also how do they simulate gunshot wounds on the actors?
They use squibs, tiny explosive packets with fake blood, to make it look like someone got shot, the wounds themselves are done by either the makeup people or the CG people.
This was great seeing you go a bit more in depth for this video. If it's not too much extra hassle, I'd welcome seeing more of these! Either way I always click on your videos!
I love the long form video! Your shorts are some of the only ones I *genuinely* look forward to, so I'm excited for more long stuff!
