What If Betelgeuse Exploded Right Now?

- At about 950 times bigger than our Sun, Betelgeuse is one of the biggest stars in our Universe. But that comes with a price. Just like us, stars have a life expectancy, and Betelgeuse is no different. It’s a ticking time bomb that's ready to go, but we're not sure when. So, what if today was the day Betelgeuse went out with a bang? How would the Earth be affected? And will our Universe ever be the same?

Short answer: Nothing. It would take 650 years for us to even notice it.
New title: What if Betelgeuse exploded 650 years ago?
Now we're talking!!!
The comment I was looking for :D
We can see it today or 100.000 years from now. If we can see it today it would have exploded during the black death epidemic around the year 1300
@@Peter-ig3hh True, but the title of the video is about if it exploded...right now. And because it is 650 light years from earth, the answer is...nothing. Nothing would happen. Not for 650 years.

Kinda weird how it probably already happened and already exploded but we can’t see it yet cuz it takes so long for the light to take to us
Remember; It is entirely possible that Betelgeuse had already gone supernova but the light from explosion hasn't reached us yet. Meaning that if the light we see from Betelgeuse from the sky is about 640 years old, that means that the supernova might be foreseeable in the 2020's.

In the context of astronomy when you say This thing X light years away happens "now", you are implicitly saying it happened X years ago.
So when you say What If Betelgeuse exploded right now you actually, implicitly, mean What If Betelgeuse exploded 650 years ago. In other words you are actually saying What If the effects of Betelgeuse's explosion arrived at us right now.
