    I have learned more about my golf swing, and why I was so inconsistent, in the last 6 months of watching your channel than I have in the last 10 years. I am in such better positions. Especially my left hip. Early extension gone. And that subtle sway back towards the target at the top of the swing has changed my ball striking forever!! I love golf again!!! Shot 74-72 over the weekend.

    This is brilliant! I didn't realise my shoulder tilt was so flat and my left shoulder was so high. I'm fighting a slice with a small over the top swing and this fits perfectly to help correct this.

    this may just be the most comprehensive golf drill ever! I have never seen this either! For me, yes a lightbulb moment, but 2 lightbulbs!!! 1 - the shallowing move has always been a mystery to me. just could never figure it out, and gave up on it. This shows exactly where I was going wrong!!! And 2, I have always struggled with my first move in the downswing. Ive tried everything - including the “keep your back to the target” which always messed up my timing. But here - I can clearly see it is more of a “keep that lead shoulder”in place just for a second. ie drop the hands and then turn. I was always doing the opposite which really sucked. Thank you for all you guys do at AMG. Hopefully Ill get down there in person someday. You guys have taken all the old golf “wisdom” we had in books back in the day and showed exactly what is happening. There is alot of truth in those old books - but some of it was flawed since we didnt have the right technology - and sometimes the “feels” are not real. This drill is amazing - my go to now every single time.

    More gold here. Will this drill help with getting my hands in front of my right thigh at the delivery position? I have really been working on the weight shifting and moving pressure properly. Still casting a bit and I cannot quite get into the proper delivery position. Getting better though. The 🔑 is remembering all these drills.

    The trail arm behavior of dropping and straightening in transition has helped me understand the concept of pulling the arrow out of the quiver that I have heard so many golf instructors talk about during the downswing. The blend of steep and shallow movements is always planing the club without the golfer having to fish for positions. Do you think that the concept of swinging a short heavy piece of rope would also help to give the same feeling?

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  Pƙed 4 lety

      I like swinging the rope...we like like a 3/4 inch diameter. 7 foot long double braid nylon rope. You can double it up and swing it.

  • @333pg333
    @333pg333 Pƙed 4 lety

    In regards to the drill I'd suggest that some players that increase right elbow closure at top of swing (ie cinching the club in crook of elbow) might be doing this more because they lack the mobility to continue shoulder plane rotation. So consciously or subconsciously, they continue to bend the right elbow as this gets the club closer to parallel (or further) at top of swing. In other words it's collapsing. This might be more common in juniors, seniors or lady golfers who don't have the strength or mobility.

    Well done as always. What are aspiring ams to do when other well known instructors advocate leaving arms up top in transition and just start the downswing with rotation? I personally have wasted a lot of practice time in the past trying to leave arms up.

  • @howardphillips8513
    @howardphillips8513 Pƙed 4 lety

    In the Gears section, you did not mention the spine angle line because that was not one of your three issues here, but it was interesting because from face on the spine angle increased its backward lean during the downswing - whereas some high handicappers move the head and spine forward (to their left) and down the line the golfer slightly stood up which I think high handicappers do, and even an elderly Jack Nicklaus did too. I feel that an under-mentioned difference between pros and ams is the movement of the head and spine in the downswing. An elderly Arnold Palmer also moved forward through the downswing, and Gary Player does so in chipping, whereas almost all pros back up a bit during impact - or so it appears to me. What do you think?

  • @marvinthornton1130
    @marvinthornton1130 Pƙed 3 lety

    I know your intent is to use the drill with the club across your arms to help with keeping your right arm extended, but I find it to be most effective in helping feel the correct way to turn in my back swing. This drill helps me feel the correct motion of my right shoulder going behind my head and prevents me from swaying in the back swing. The best drill that helps my golf swing.

    I thought I posted this yesterday but don't see it. I discovered your videos a couple weeks ago and now a big fan. The hip rotation and preventing early extension were especially helpful. I like this video and struggle with the video's easiest concept....turning the left shoulder down. When I put the club across my chest I have no problem achieving the 40 degree tilt but when I put the club in my hands the turn is considerably flatter....very little tilt. I can do most of your complex swing thoughts but this simple concept is giving me fits. Any suggestions? Appreciate all you two do to help us!

    Ive managed to get my left shoulder working low early mainly by changing/improving my set up which is simple to say hard to do! and by feeling my left hip/oblique works down fractionally first which clears the space for my left shoulder. Wierdly I used to sway a foot off the ball and keep my left heel down but now I have reduced my sway my left heel wants to come up a little!

  • @diceman3146
    @diceman3146 Pƙed 4 lety

    I understand the shoulder tilt but you need to explain extension which is likely to happen when you don’t let your head move laterally an inch or so. I think you should explain that when you turn back and keep spine angle you can have flexion with the shoulders by moving head laterally back or have extension when you try to keep head in same position. When I talk about laterally moving your head you must understand no excessive upward or downward movement should happen.

    I came to your channel to get help on my dynamic pressure shift and already in less than a week it's greatly improved. My analytical mind loves the gear demos.
    I've hit my fair share of what i consider great hits, but when I took this to the course the other day the sound, speed and flight i got were next level.
    I had a quick question on the timing of reconnecting your trail arm and getting your lead butt cheek "onto the glass". I have a habit of early extension so i really need to feel my front hip clearing out. After i finish recentering (with the downhill feel) should i immediately blend this into pushing my lead hip back (without straightening leg too early)? At the same time as this should i be reconnecting my trail arm? It's a very short time window but I can feel the difference when one goes before the other or at same time.
    Thanks!

    Such great information guys. Really appreciate how you break it all down and give us drills to work on... and OMG the animated swings are AWESOME! I've forwarded your channel to all my golf buddies. My question: I'm a 56yo' golfer starting to see some distance on mid iron clubs slip away. I've noticed that when I address and hit the ball (with irons 3-6) with my feet closer together than normal (slightly outside my shoulders as opposed to a wider stance, like when I was younger) I'm able to get most of my distance back. I just find that sometimes by back foot slips backwards just after impact. It's like it slipping backwards because I'm turning to hard when driving through the swing from the top. I'd like to fix this. I don't know how to fix this without changing how my hips move forward as I start my downswing, like you guys teach.. PLEASE ASSIST!! :) .. and thank you for your channel!

  • @grahamjones7371

    Thanks for the great drill as a collapsing right arm is one of my biggest faults.Tho due to improving my set up and then my takeaway its got a lot better. If i swing right arm only it doesnt collapse and drops whilst maintaining lag!
    My thoughts are that like most faults in adult male golfers that have been good at sports it is the urge to hit at/down on the ball that causes this.
    If you think of hitting up through the ball and allow gravity/club mass to take care of the down the right arm wont collapse ,think topspin forehand!

    the key is for the shoulder angle to establish itself before we turn. the right shoulder will move up, and turn, as we take the club back. but there is only so far that can take us. but, the left chest is then in a position to rotate (if the right leg has cleared the way) and the shoulder angle will build (if the grip is good) and the swing arc will recentre the weight distribution as we get to the top, if the head positions itself correctly.

    Excellent video...again! I've been working on swing plane and watching down the line videos and everytime I was " on plane" I noticed the butt of the handle would work down not out, during that initial first move. When I was "over the top" the butt of the handle went towards the target line during the start of the downswing. A good transition, besides the early weight shift, needs this lowering of the right arm. Thanks for the great video!

    Thank you AMG. You nailed it. I’ve been working on keeping my shoulders turning at the same angle of my spine at address for awhile now. However, your explanation of the proper right arm bend has made the most improvement in my golf swing. Shawn’s demo of the right elbow jabbing into his side and causing early extension looks just like someone else I know (who will remain nameless). Indeed, a light bulb moment.

    Great video as usual chaps 👍 I was almost getting withdrawal symptoms since your last post was nearly a week ago 😬 The lowering of the arms has always baffled me and why is it such a misunderstood concept in the golf teaching world ie why do most golf instructors (certainly ones who have taught me bar one) think arms magically come down đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž

    My take away is flawless. It’s when I get in the transition it all falls apart. My shoulder plane is 90 degrees of spine going back, but when I come down into impact I can’t stop my left shoulder going parabolic up to my left ear. My hips stay back and clear. I’m wondering, Do the Pros release their left shoulder at 90? What are the swing thoughts to keep my left shoulder down and rotating behind me instead of going up.?

    AMG: I caught on to you just over a year ago. Great info! Gears, Pros vs. Ams. I have learned so much, thank you! At 3:22 min. to the 3:50 min. you say the upper arm lowers and reconnects immediately to lower the club on plane. My question is : Is this a dynamic lowering of the right upper arm, or does it get lowered by the actions of the lower body and rotation during the transition?

    I think I learned something here. To maintain a proper shoulder tilt in the backswing, the head dips some because the hips need to swing on an angle?? When you demonstrate shoulder turn standing straight up, there is no hip tilt therefore the head stays pretty centered. Am I on the right path here in terms of head dipping in backswing being necessary due to change in pelvic tilt??

I was told by a top 50 teacher that my shoulders are fully turned by the time My club gets to shoulder height on the backswing, what I would call three quarters. I don’t really won’t to lose the increase clubhead speed I gain with the longer backswing. Is there a drill for keeping my head from lifting, should I not worry about it, or should I just shorten my swing?
    By the way, the idea of reconnecting the right arm to start the downswing may be the key to correcting my hitting one or two shots fat a round, by keeping me from moving my upper body too fast and trying to save the shot by dropping my hands.

    Left shoulder abduction....
    Mike ... 85* increase to 90* initial back swing 78 top...
    Sean ... 90* 75*. 75 top

    M&S you can prove this by making a full swing back / down / through at 'speed' with just the right arm. You cannot swish the club (fast) if you put your right elbow close to your body.

    On the “arm bend less than 90 deg” part you guys seem to have mistaken a characteristic of some good swings, that is flat ones, for a universal characteristic of all good swings. This advice could be ruinous for a more upright, less connected swing. Granted upright swings may not be fashionable, but....

      @AthleticMotionGolf  Pƙed 3 lety

      Has nothing to do with flat or upright, we have the data for all varieties of swings. It would be ruinous to think that only applies to flat swings.

    I like the drill but I'd like to see it with some complete swings, hitting balls as you discuss but don't demonstrate. With complete swings, the sequencing becomes more transparent

      Yessir we're going to start hitting more balls. Thanks for your comment
