    "The one true king..."
So, here's to another wonderful character butchered. As a book reader, it hurts to see this character going down this path because he is my favourite from the series. I respect the decisions writers made although I believe it could've been so much better if they stuck to the source material. But I must admit, he was portrayed wonderfully by Stephen Dillane, every time he appeared on screen my knees would bend by their own will.

I held Storm's End against the power of the Reach for a year, and took Dragonstone from the Targaryens. I smashed Mance Rayder at the Wall, though he had twenty times my numbers. @@Longshanks1690 I think he will defeat the Boltons, because he has the advantage. The Karstarcks can't betray him anymore, in the eyes of the north man he has arya stark, Lord Manderly wants to betray the Boltons with some other Lords, he is the best commander in Westeros and I think he will have Jon's role in the series as the one defeating them. So I think because of all of this Stannis Baratheon will defeat the Boltons by Winterfell in the books.

In an ideal world, you would be right. In a world where George didn’t consign Stannis to the role of “doomed pretender,” you would be so right.
But to stop Stannis, George can pull magic Lannister-Tyrell armies out of his ass.
Plus, he has said the Stark Direwolves will be facing off against Ramsay’s Bitches. And I didn’t read about any wolves in Stannis’ army, did you?
Face it - some bullshit set of circumstances will emerge to prevent Stannis’ victory so that the Starks will be the ones to save the North.
I believe Dumb and Dumber fucked with the story but I don’t believe for a second they drastically altered it to this extent.

GRRM hates religion and feudalism and spends a lot of the books showing just how shitty both are. Stannis is characterised by how stubbornly he follows the laws and traditions of westeros and his support of an extremest religion, ending with him on the iron throne would be against what GRRM stands for. That being said it will likely take more than a psychotic torturer to defeat the most experienced commander in westeros. How is he legitimate? I mean truly Roberts reign was never legitimate at all because as soon as aerys II, and rhaegar died, the law of succession as decreed by Aegon the conqueror himself says the throne passes to Viserys Targaryen.
Viserys has to be dead before Robert is truly king, because of it, by the law of Westeros and the 7 Robert was never truly king making stannis’s claim just as illegitimate.
Not like any of that matters, if stannis wanted the throne he should have fought and won it like his brother did but he didn’t, he bitched, he moaned, he failed.

Unfortunately for some reason Benioff and Weiss openly hated his character and turned him into ignorant religious zealot in Seasons 3-4 and eventually a daughter-burning villain in Season 5.
Stannis was the first major character who was ruined by shitty writing in the show. Defeated by "20 good men", killed by Brienne in the name of "rightfull king Renly" (seriously, how could they write such a lying and stupid line?)

For example, Robb Stark's death completely changed the geopolitical landscape, placing the Boltons in charge of the North, causing the Northern Houses to flock to the side of Stannis in secret. It also likely prompted Littlefinger to assassinate Joffrey, as with the Lannisters in a more powerful position, the time was ripe to sew division in their family to ensure no one family could become strong enough.

Unfortunately, Stannis had absolutely no business being king.. With Rhaegar and Viserys dead, the throne would have passed to Daenerys as queen regent and then to her eventual son Rhaego... Robert knew this and that was the reason why he was so desperate to kill Daenerys. Even if we don't take the Targaryen side into account and acknowledge Robert as legitimate king (this is arguable too since Robert may have won the war but it was Jaime who actually killed the Mad King, he could have claimed the throne as well if he wanted to).. but if we agree on Robert being king, he still had Gendry, bastard or not he had more rights than Stannis by being a son, Cersei knew it and that was why she commanded all of Robert's bastards to be put to death. Even Robert's last will was for Ned to be Protector of the Realm until a new king could be installed, therefore if no rightful king could be found soon enough the regency of the realm would have belonged to House Stark, to Ned and his sons after him, basically becoming the new royal house. Sure enough Ned was a Stannis supporter, but should Daenerys son Rhaego have survived and Dany and Drogo come to westeros to claim the throne... Eddard would have been the first to ask Stannis to step down as king, or otherwise go to war... but without the north on his side.

Eddard Stark yea same. Stannis wasn’t given enough justice in my opinion he should have formed a good shield wall with spears and easily beat them off. The army Stannis is leading has been tried, experienced, been through the massive battle of blackwater, battle beyond the wall and marched through harsh snows. That army should be hard as iron, having fought alongside Stannis so much none of em should of abandoned him. The enemy army should’ve been scared stiff, I’m surprised the horses didn’t bend the knee XD.
For real tho Stannis defeat is hideous, worst moment up until season 8 was when he was defeated. Brienne should’ve bent the knee lol.
