Sandor may be no saint, but he rescued Sansa from beeing raped and murdered and actually cared for her well being.
He protected Arya and I still think the "ransom" is nothing more than an excuse. A lie he tells himself because he refuses to admit that both Arya and Sansa remind him of his sister who was killed by his older brother. He acts like he did because he thinks that this kind of feeling is a weakness.
He protected both of them because he blames himself for his sisters death and wants to do at least one good thing before he dies. If not for Sandor's bravery, Arya and Sansa would have never seen each other again and Little Finger possibly never got the justice he deserved for betraying Ned Stark.
Ned would definitly be thankfull if he survived the show.

Ned stark might've been Arya's father, but Sandor Clegane was a Dad to her when she needed it.
Edit: This is four years after, damn. Alright what I mean by him being a dad, he literally taught her the things that allow her not to be gutted and lying in a ditch with lifeless expression. Ned was good, but he didn't want either of his daughters to be anything of what they became to be. Arya being probably one of the best fighters and skilled assassin (Even though I'm highly disappointed it wasn't Jon that killed night king). Sansa being ruthless & cunning, outwitting the one man who taught her how to be deceitful and was the one who started the chain of events that led to Ned's death. Sandor taught them how to live in a world where no one gives a shit about you, and everyone has agenda. You won't make it unless you fight for it. That's the show Sandor, the book oh boy that's a WHOLE different story.

Like everyone is talking of how Sansa matured and became a mastermind and very good player jn the game but only thing that happened was that she stopped crying and she quite literally did nothing that actually showed a mastermind. The only reason she isn’t still manipulated by Littlfinger or that she killed him is because Littlfinger didn’t know Bran’s abilities as the three Eyed Raven. Plus that her “independence” of the north was totally bs, like she fucking asks Bran for it and he just happens to say yes. He was made a monster due to his circumstances and he embraced that role.
He became more than just a tool for evil. He defended Sansa not because he owed it to her or he hoped she'd take him somewhere. He did it because he chose to. He fought for arya because he chose to. He could have retired to building the sept, but destiny needed him and again, he chose to be the better man. Despite his outside appearance....
Despite hundreds of people he killed...
    Despite his violence...
There was a part of Sandor Clegane's inner heart that contained compassion. He knew that an older sibling's job is to protect a younger one. His own brother's fierce, wicked, and murderous cruelty was the ultimate betrayal. Among the Seven Kingdoms, The Hound was one of the most honest, and true people to exist. In a way, he 'adopted' Arya. The love he had for her was unconventional, and even he didn't know he had it. Arya's greatest benefit from Sandor was wisdom about life and the world, a far greater asset than her learning the assassin skills of Jaqen H'ghar, or sword fighting from Syrio Forel.
Sandor, Tyrion, and Jon were the heart of the series. They were the toughest, bravest, wisest, honest, and most honorable of all.

Until the end I would agree.
His arc was about putting aside his hatred of the world and becoming someone better. And he did. The Hound died but Sandor lived.
And in s8... he went back to his old ways. A vengeance filled mission... the opposite direction his arc led him. He should have killed Gregor out of mercy (as I believe he will in the books), not because of a grudge. Ruined his arc imo.

He was never anointed, but had the courage and bravery of a real knight. A bitter, cynical and hateful man, acquainted with the harsh realities of the world, who committed violent acts and still protected and fought for the weak and defenseless, and battled for the greater good. And in the end, even permitted himself to be human by seeking out a revenge of an old, unresolved atrocity. In a universe of supernatural and magic, a deeply flawed man true to his and the nature's law.
