  • While I was putting the video together I googled the symptom of this Stihl BG86 handheld blower and it seems to happen enough that other guys call it a "common" occurance/problem. Well I guess we can add this one to the list. Thanks for watching and share this with anyone that has this blower. It just might save them a trip to the shop.

    Can I just point out that the fly wheel bolt Is NOT a left handed/reverse thread as stated here. Anti clockwise to loosen clockwise to tighten.

    Great video, thanks for sharing. It saved my four year old Stihl BG86 from the scrap bin.
    The piston seemed to have seized up, and all three housing bolts were loose. The flywheel
    was scarred, but no fin damage.
    I think it's worth mentioning the importance of aligning the
    key on the flywheel with the slot on the engine drive shaft. Take care do do so without damaging the key. Also, while the cowling was off, I cleaned and lubricated the starter
    assembly. Years of gunk removed! The Stihl started right up and is rockin' once again.

    picked up one of these sitting next to the trash. Exact problem as in video. Only a couple fins were chipped. Put some loctite on the threads, and put it back together. Started on first pull. Cost to repair, zero dollars and a little time. Woohoo free blower.

    My BG86 «seized» up this morning. Thank God I found your video Dave; precisely the same had happened to my blower. It was even the very same screw that had come undone. Threadlocked it and reassembled. Started on first pull. Thank you for saving my blower!❤

    My SH86C "Seized". After seeing this video, I was sure I had it licked, but all three bolts were tight under the flywheel. I took the other side off along with the shredder and impeller, and there it was. The loose screw was tightened, the unit reassembled, and back in Business! Thanks!

    So my mom takes it to stihl and they tell her they don’t know what’s wrong with it but it will cost more to fix than it’s worth. I live in another state so I tell her to hang on to it until i come home. So I get home and she tells me it won’t even crank. I go outside, prime it and it cranks on the first pull. So I’m like “what the H?”. I blow off the drive, the front sidewalks etc and it’s running fine but it has this hellacious rattle around the motor area. I start turning the blower sideways etc. trying to isolate the rattle and bam it “seizes”. Can’t pull the starter cord, it’s locked up. Go n the house start looking for t/s videos and this is the first one I pull up. I watch it and I’m thinking Yep that definitely could be the problem. Go outside, pull the cover and Bam! The screw on the top, behind the flywheel is sticking out and jamming the flywheel. I turn it in as much as I can with the flywheel in place and she is free as a whistle. Just have to pull the flywheel and tighten those screws and it will be as good as new! I may have found it on my own eventually, but this was like magic. Thanks! I have a feeling those Stihl guys probably knew exactly what was wrong with it and were hoping my mom would abandon it right there. Then they would have had a perfectly good blower.

    Hi, how did you open the flywheel exactly. Im struggling to do it, because when im trying to open the flywheel nut, the flywheel keeps moving,,, I'm I doing something wrong , please help?!!!!!

    • @ZombieDaveAZ
      @ZombieDaveAZ  Před 11 měsíci

      The flywheel is small so it's not on there really tight. Take out the spark plug and put some pull cord in the spark plug hole. Turn the flywheel counter clockwise until it won't turn anymore. I think it's a 13mm socket and remove the nut that holds the flywheel. Leave the nut on the shaft but flush with the top of the crankshaft. That is to protect the threads on the crankshaft. Tap the nut while GENTLY lifting up on the flywheel. That should do it for you. Let me know.👍

  • @specialbeat
    @specialbeat Před 3 lety

    I'm having the exact same problem, however, I can't seem to take the flywheel off after undoing the nut. Any ideas? Thanks

    • @ZombieDaveAZ
      @ZombieDaveAZ  Před 3 lety +2

      Do this at your own risk. Put a pry bar or screwdriver under the flywheel at the thickest part. Put the nut back on the crankshaft. Pry or push down on the pry bar and give the nut(flush with the top of the threads) a good whack with the hammer. It should pop right off. If you don't feel comfortable with this take it to a mechanic. Let me know how it goes please. 👍

    Thanks for the video mate, fixed one of my blowers in 5 mins with this :D I've got another one with the flywheel not turning but it's not the screws annoyingly. What's the next thing I should check?

    • @ZombieDaveAZ
      @ZombieDaveAZ  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Dave, pull the spark plug and see if it will turn over. Another problem with these is if the metering diaphragm allows fuel into the crankcase it will hydro lock the piston. See if fuel comes out the spark plug hole. Try that. It is easier if the pull cord is off and you can wiggle the flywheel back and forth.

Spark (pull the spark plug ground it to the head and pull the rope while looking at the gap on the plug) if you have spark, dip the bottom half of the spark plug in the gas tank and put back in the spark plug hole.
