When I worked for Little Caesars, we had a lot of homeless people come in when they tried the failed needle exchange program. My store manager saw an older man outside with a sign saying he was homeless and was asking for money. She felt bad for him and wanted to help. She went to him and offered him a job at minimum wage ($8.75 or $8.50 at that time). To her surprise, the man just smiled and laughed at her. He said "I'd be lucky to get $200 a week working there. Why would I do that when I can make $400 in an evening? She realized that he was making more in just a few days standing outside for 4 hours than she was making in 2 weeks working full time 12-hour shifts 5 times a week. Her charitable nature took a hit that day.

You actually spend more money on food being homeless than you would if you were not homeless. When you're homeless, you don't have access to a fridge or to cooking. So you are forced to buy premade things who are ungodly expensive. My food budget while homeless and living in my car was $200 per month. Since not being homeless, my food budget is more like $120-$150 because I can buy in bulk and keep things refrigerated or frozen. Being homeless is more expensive than people think.

Making it easy allows them to continue down a road that's not healthy for them or for those they may take down with them. Our society has become weak and less disciplined. This brings out laziness and corruption. Compare it to parenting. Disciplined children have a higher rate of being successful. Forcing people to change their lives I think can create bitterness and resentment in much the same way that offering people resources can enable them. I still think our best bet is to offer people homes and resources and hope that this creates a desire to integrate into society, give back, perhaps become employed or volunteer, and so on. I say this mainly because it’s actually cheaper than imprisoning them. Although in places like SF it’s gonna be closer due to a completely unaffordable housing situation.

Portland: 3 free meals. New clean set of clothes every day, new pair of shoes every week, free phone, cash, and they won’t arrest anyone who is homeless for anything etc etc etc.
San Diego is the same way.
Downtown, parks, sidewalks: covered in tents, stolen shopping carts, structures, drugs, disease, mental illness, aggression.

I can verify the scamming from personal experience. I worked a crisis line for several years. We got calls from those we called frequent fliers. One of the most obvious ploys was used by those who were voluntarily admitted to the hospital. As soon as the weather started turning warm, they would sign themselves out, against medical advice (AMA). This was annotated as discharged, AMA.
Then when the weather began getting chilly, they would call us basically saying they were 'disintegrating and needed to be hospitalized. A mental health professional would be dispatched and the person was careful to walk the line between involuntary treatment authorized (ITA) and a self assessment of requiring hospitalization. Again, as soon as the weather got warm and they could sleep in the parks, under bridges or pool together to get a cheap apartment, they'd leave, AMA. They could take their SSDI (another story in itself) and party hearty.
We'd see them again when it got cold again and they either had to pay for heat or they just wanted free meals.
Compassion is a fine human trait. Sadly, not all people treat compassion as a desirable trait, but manipulate compassionate people into providing for them and their chosen lifestyle.

Since you obviously have a better grasp of how to help people, you should perhaps run for office and pass legislation to give anyone anything they ask for. What need for a budget? Just give people whatever they want, the resources will appear out of thin air.
      3. Sum up the evils of having any private property, any restrictions on keeping anything for yourself. You should lead the way and give every person in need a key to your dwelling and trust them only to take what they need, not steal from you or trash your home. Be compassionate to everyone.
Better yet, just remove the locks from every door you have on your home. Let anyone come into your home and eat, sleep, bathe, etc.

I went around introducing myself and getting to know them, so that they would appreciate my request for them to stay away from the vendors and patrons during hours of operation. While I was working, I witnessed how much, and what quality of, food the homeless were being given several times per day. Their diet was full of fresh fruit, gourmet meals, and an array of beverages. I tried to imagine what that would have cost me to be that indulgent. I could not afford it, even though I work double-shifts and nearly every night. I was so disgusted by this realization that I threw my potted meat on stale bread sandwich into the grass. Later, one homeless man offered me his bag of food, because he had way more than he needed. He said I needed it more than him. I DID! NOW I SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN AMERICA!!!! To my shock the state of California assisted four family members, three children and the wife, into getting on disability and the able-bodied husband was now being paid by the state as a caregiver. I'm a disabled person in the midwest. I do appreciate some help from food assistance but I will tell you this. I live alone, no children, and I can tell you even with inflation, they give people way too much money for food. It allows them to buy garbage pre packaged food. If you buy the basics and cook from scratch you dont need half the money they give you. It is a joke.

Maybe in your state. But I assure you many states barely give enough for a couple weeks and it keeps getting smaller. I'm thankful I no longer need them but when I did ......buying basics for myself and kids ,eating leftovers two or three days bc of trying to make more for less .........jails and prisons get twice as much. I will never complain about my country giving it's citizens food. I'm fine paying for it with tax dollars. Because it's there when or if any of us should ever need it. Food is a basic human right and if we can't help each other to make sure that every one of us is fed at the very least then we have a lot more problems than we could ever imagine. And I'm so tired of hearing people gripe about people getting food to live. I assure you if I decide to splurge and get a steak for my family to make them feel somewhat normal when I can't afford what I used to be able to. Then later on in the month reading rice and ramen noodles if we're lucky and I'm paying for it after the fs are gone.

I love the apparent fact that through personal research Shellenberger gets it mostly right. what a huge step toward enlightening people who mostly feed on the fake news narratives.
I would however like to see more emphasis that not having a home is not a crime category (major or minor).
A criminal drug dealer is a problem whether he has no home or lives in a mansion.
A thief is a problem whether he has a home or if he is nomadic by foot or car.
    A person who litters likewise.
We do not need any laws directed AT or pertaining TO homelessness.
It always has been and continues to be a good idea to simply aprehend and encarcerate genuine criminals - homelessness is completely beside the point, but incidentally would become less of a "problem" if these things, which should have been getting done all along, were acted on.
It's important that a growing number of American citizens realize that the real criminals (elected and bureaucratic leftists) do not want a functioning western culture society. They want chaos, disorder, mayhem and suffering so that there will be little resistance when they offer their control measures as a solution. Such solutions as they offer will only make matters even worse.

I agree with you. And part of it starts by us taxpayers correcting the narrative of getting paid by the "government". As long as the money train is a nameless/faceless entity, people don't realize that is MY money being spent....YOUR money...OUR money. The government is the mechanism that takes it from hard working folks and gives it to creeps like this who have no shame. When my kids started to vote, I would make them take their paycheck and look at all the $ coming out of their part time job and told them to consider this each time they decided on who and how to vote....what is it going to cost them in the long run. People don't make the connection and just keep on throwing good money at bad problems.
