Ellie Plays The Last Of Us Main Theme by Gustavo Santaolalla - Part 2 Guitar

- I let a Raspberry Pi control my game, and had it play music that TLOU fans will all certainly recognize :)
Hardware: This stems from my "Viewers Control Chaos" project that lets users change how my controller works. With a few tweaks I can apply some advanced macros like this. Though I could previously spoof button presses and joystick angles, the touchpad was only something that could be read. Recent hacking at code let me fake touchpad inputs so that I perform inhuman actions on the guitar.
Learn more about my chaos project here: github.com/blegas78/chaos
Music: I modified the original version of The Last of Us Main Theme in a few ways so that it was better suited for the limitations of this interface. On major difference is the change in key near the end to take better advantage of the full range of the instrument. The original is highly expressive in its performance but there is no expression control within the game so things had be cut or shifted to not sound strange. I did my best to keep the full spirit of the original but you may notice some differences (I'm not a practiced musician so sorry if I made anything too jarring).
Update: here is new sheet music. I did not follow this, but the sheet music I used is no longer available. This seems pretty close, but again I had to modify the music anyway: musescore.com/user/4761476/sc...
This is the old broken link to the sheet music I used as a guide: musescore.com/user/16006641/s...
The section that starts @2:45 does a lot of key changes in the menu to select different notes. I did this just to see if it would work and was surprised that it kept time! It was totally unnecessary to keep but I loved how chaotic the menuing looked.

Can't believe this guitar game actually has a deep story part behind it
I know right? Simulator games these days are adding so much lore in the background these days, totally didn’t expect so much of it from this guitar sim.
im dying
I actually find the guitar gameplay deeper than the shit story personally.
Good comment though.
Your channel is full of toy reviews and childish sonic stories. No wonder you don't like TLOU xxD@@TheDanimatorsChannel
@@TheDanimatorsChannel I passionately hate part 2 for quite some reasons, so here are those very reasons that I wrote with my full capability:
The story:
It is a shitty story built around vengeance and how terrible it is, the entire story seems to be written by either inexperienced indie developers or a bunch of 11 year olds, the story just keeps hitting you with guilt for the things that you have done for revenge. For example Nora. It uses vulnerable things like pregnant women and dogs in order to guilt you to really get the concept “revenge is bad” in which I really hate for a number of reasons. The top reason being that at the end af the game the one who persuades vengeance gets to leave with a loved one and a good future and the one who doesn’t, loses pretty much everything.
Joel’s terribly executed death:
Joel had to die, he had to pay for what he had done at the end of part one, but not at the start of the game and definitely not by the swing of a golf club after being ambushed. The only thing that I consider to be good about Joel’s death is why it happened. And to simply put it it happened because he let his guard down and said his name. The parts that I really enjoyed throughout the game was Ellie’s memories or “flashbacks” with joel which would have been much more affecting and poetic if they led up to Joel’s death.
The Characters:
Most of the characters in this game is written, introduced and used quite briefly only to kill them off without any character development and background story. I will only give two examples for this which I hope is enough because this is one of my better points. Manny and Jesse, Manny we just spend half an hour with, learn that he has a sick father, likes to say “pendejo” and watches anime while drunk sometimes. Jesse is an asian that I pretty much remember nothing about, he got introduced we spent time with him he found out that he was going to be a father and then a bullet to the face to end it a little to early, after that he is pretty much never mentioned. Just gone, just like Manny.
The terribly done order of the game:
At the very start of the game you get 45 minutes or so of Abby gameplay, she kills Joel and then we are left to just wonder why we played her. And our questions are answered 12 hours later after a cliffhanger, answered with 12 painful hours of Abby gameplay. The gameplay of Abby is a flashback where you play the 3 seattle days again, this time as Abby doing the stuff that she did. And while this happens you see flashbacks inside of a flashback. The game would be much much better if we played as Abby before Joel’s death.
So to recap and shortly summarize everything and why I don’t like this The Last of Us Part II
The graphics and atmosphere is awesome as usual but the combat, weapon variety and gameplay are reused from part one and some form Uncharted(The car chase with Jesse, the rope swinging, etc.) the story is shit, the characthers are poorly written, all of the deaths of the game are poorly executed the timeline is all over the place and the ending is terribly written and unsatisfying(which I hope will be fixed in part 3)
That is going to be all I have to say, hope this reaches a lot of people who likes the game or haven’t decided if it is good or not yet. I apologise if I have made any minor mistakes throughout my writings as english is my third language. I wish anyone who read through all of this a fine day.
64 hours spent for the main story
3400 hours spent playing the guitar
In the description it's said that he used a programmable tool for accomplish this

Imagine a survival post apocalyptic game with infected and all and there's a guitar simulator integrated lol
...well I guess we don't have to imagine it anymore! Haha
@@blegas78TV it sounds like a remix of it that's why its so great
Rust? 😂
so mad you couldnt pick up a guitar or banjo in RDR2 and play some good ol cowpoke music.
Thats an extra factor what makes Last of us Part II so great. Honestly, would someone dissapointed because playing on guitar is missing from the game? No, but the Naughty Dog developed even this feature and thats what makes this studio special.
Funny how Ellie can go from chilling, playing the guitar, to committing massive acts of sheer violence, carnage & bloodshed. 🤣
She has just found balance in life! Wait, what does that mean of other guitarists? 😬
She's adorable lol
Its normal, she is in hell
Ludonarrative dissonance
@@NickInRealLife why is it dissonance?
In my head canon, Ellie wrote this as a song about her trek across the states with Joel
In my head canon, they're songs Joel wrote in his 20 years before he met Ellie. About the pain he felt for his daughter and the hopelessness he felt in the world, all while continuing to push on. Songs that got him through pain that he'd end up teaching to Ellie.
@@TheOfficialBrother In my head canon, the dude in Jackson who looks suspiciously like the composer wrote them before outbreak day, him and Joel were old buddies, so he gave Joel his mixtape, outbreak day happened, and many years later they met again in Jackson, then Joel gave Ellie the mixtape, with Gus' blessing.
And they all bonded over their love of music.
@@drummerboi661what dude in jackson?? can you send a link cause i can’t find anything 😕
@@mariyastoyanova31 czcams.com/video/CAeXIz-PE8o/video.html
It's literally just the composer, figure I should give him the credit for the music in lore, hence my head canon including him.
@@drummerboi661 in my head canon peepeepoopoo
The Last of Us Part II is the best guitar simulation videogame. It even has a fully voiced and directed campaign to play through between practice sessions.
A lot of effort went into the guitar, there’s a presentation by the devs of the in-game guitar I highly recommend for a watch!
Yeah the story mode is hella lame but the guitar simulation is incredible
@@PopCounterCultureEd Just say you haven't played the game lmfao
@AK-su3tz I did a whole podcast about it when it first came out buddy, it's on my channel.
@@blegas78TVcould you get the link?
Honestly insane how Naughty Dog threw in a fully functioning guitar that can be used to play some pretty intricate songs even without a Raspberry Pi even when they didn't have to. TLOU2 showcases the level of quality and detail all AAA studios should strive for.
Yeah they really focussed on the playability of the guitar. It's still a bit tricky but surprisingly playable!
no man, no one should strive for that. This insane level of details and being able to play so precisely the guitar which is, let's say it, useless, shouldn't surpass the health and well-being of hundreds of people. No one should live and work in the desastrous conditions this game asked in order to be created in a so polished way.
@@ilyan.v.371 so stop the world economic cause in every big company that made something you use that shit happen don't be cynical
@@direwolf5927 stop responding on such a dumb absurd way. This crunch doesn't happen in every game company, and shouldn't happen just to please our distorted unreal desires for entertainment. Much incredible games come at the cost of an enourmous effort without being as desastrous as the one of TLOU2. There's a reason why we're mentioning this type of AAA when talking about crunch.
@llyan. V. Disastrous :)
Ellie fingers moving all over the fret board got me dead 🤣
i saw the comment and went back up to check and i died XD
Those hand animations are immaculate. Especially when you consider that each of them has to be able to flow into every single other one while still looking natural.
The way she snaps chord to chords is very unnatural but besides that yeah it’s pretty good
As a guitarist, the idea of jumping between chord shapes just to play a single note from the chord is nuts.
@@leviathen151 YES
On the strumming hand, the finger movement feels like it was stuck onto a robot... I don't see how any of those movement look even close to being natural.
As seen by the replies
Haters gonna hate
3:08 ellie shredding that guitar 🤘
The end is my favorite part :)
@@blegas78TVhow tf are you switching so fast at the end AND using your stick around 😭
i’m so happy that they used this in the series as the theme song 🥲
Same here! It's hard to imagine a version of TLOU without this theme
I dont think I'll be skipping the intros for all the episodes to come
@@blxckdreadful7419 yeah me too. That’s like half the experience
This is honestly more impressive than playing it on a real guitar,
well, tbf its not a real person playing the game. Its stated in the description, so its not that impressive. But still, cool to see
I was gonna say it can be sort of challenging on an actual guitar but this! Lol
Its actually not but its still cool.
no
@@123nmsis I mean I’d say it is considering the fact that it’s technically not even a person playing in this video it’s a computer controlling it
Imagine if playing this unlocked an Easter egg where you see someone walking down the aisle from the door in the back. A man. And just before his head appears in the shot, he stops as the song ends. And you just hear in that raspy Texas accent… “How are you doing, kiddo?”
*close up shot of Ellie turning around slowly*
*transition shot back to this angle*
*no one is there*
Oooh that’s be haunting! Love your creativity :)
That would be such a cool easter egg thoooo
this gave me chills man
i can promise you that naughty dog never expected anyone to use the guitar sim in this way lol
@@sonsique Oh I agree. But imagine if they did haha. Maybe they'll put something in now!
This is honestly beautiful. Thanks for making this!
Sure thing!
This is probably harder to play than an actual guitar
Best tlou2 guitar gameplay I've ever seen
😭😭😭😭😭
How did you manage to play this on the little touch pad. its crazy yet very awesome 🤯
I either have super tiny hands... or I did something a bit more hacky. Take a look at my description if you want to learn more :)

That’s not how to play originaly,I play this in a different way,and the autor too

The funny thing is that this is much more impressive than playing it in real life.

I would love to see Ellie play Johnny Cash's version of Hurt

Ellie not knowing she’s in a game but playing TLOU game theme song
This is the most technically impressive thing I’ve seen anyone do with the guitar
I play guitar, and when I tell you, playing actual notes on the guitar in the game is wayyyyyy harder than playing the notes on a real guitar. This is skill
The animation may not be the smoothest...but dang! Have I only ever imagined having a video game where you could play an actual guitar in-game! 😍💓
Whaddya mean? The animation is incredible
@@itzfuyuwoooo6646They are absolutely not lol. Her strumming hand is so freaking robotic, and she switches chords in a freaking instant. Sometimes it doesnt even look like she is fretting, just sliding her hands across the neck.
@raelanimates8829 her hand looks robotic because this is being played by a robot lmao, when an actual human is using the guitar in game the animations are shockingly accurate
its actually incredible how much this sounds like a real person playing guitar. Most of the time a game has an interactive instrument like this, it sounds fake. im not exactly sure how to describe it but just look at the lute in mordhau or the guitar in Into the Radius VR and you'll see what i mean, it just sounds so artificial. No game ive seen comes close to how natural and realistic this interactive guitar sounds
I agree! The developers made the instrument with round-robin sampling, meaning that when a note is played it uses a different sampled recording. This prevents a monotonous repeated sample that probably helps a lot with the more natural sound. Maybe some other factors contribute to the realism too. Thanks for checking out the video!
Yea modeled instruments are getting pretty realistic nowadays
Bro’s a menace, no bro honestly, I can’t imagine how long it took to make this. Here’s a like and subscription
look at this... amazing. the fact that he could program a device to make the character play this and the fact that it worked seamlessly just goes to show the level of brilliance and detail Naughty dog puts into their games. Also brilliant idea
I love your comment! ND did put a lot of great effort into the guitar and this video is only possible because of that :)

This is amazing Blegas! I didn't know that raspberry pie could do this :o
Hey Walter! It's definitely not a common method of using a raspberry pi and is therefore low on support. I had to patch a Linux kernel module to make it work. I'm glad you like it!
And I thought i was a insane fan. You blew me away and now I'm gonna spend a VERY long time perfecting this

finding this was like finding a needle in a hay stack, but Jesus am I glad I found this. This is the BEST INGAME guitar cover. I've watched TONS of complication vids of people playing guitar covers in game and this was PERFECTION. You played so damn smoothly on such a small controller. I can't even use the damn thing since it's so hard to play guitar in the game and you switch keys so instantly. Not to mention this is the most accurate theme of the first game anyone played on the controller. THANK YOU FOR GRACING MY EARS WITH THIS.

I love how there’s an apocalypse game and you see almost every gamer trying to learn whole songs for this guitar segment 🤣 I’ve seen so many good covers in game on CZcams
It's a surprisingly capable instrument! The way it's constructed based on the circle of fifths also makes it easy for anyone to jump into and make music
