How I made this video: I wrote a cover of the original music and performed it on a keyboard to record a MIDI file. This file was converted into button and touchpad presses with some of my controller hacking code.
This is from the iconic scene in the game where Ellie and Joel get ambushed when driving the truck from Bill's Town into Pittsburgh (Kansas City in the HBO show). This was also featured in one of the original game's trailers back in 2012. At the end of the trailer Joel says "I've been on both sides" :)
I was able to get the music fit pretty nicely into the full range of the in-game instrument by dropping the key of the song from Am to Abm, resulting in hitting the lowest E and the highest Ab at the same time during the song's climax. I wanted to follow the original rhythm of strumming but it would not sound good with he limited in-game note range, so I took some creative liberties. I played most of this on piano, but had to edit some of the notes by hand because the timing of a guitar sounds off when played identically.
Hardware: This stems from my "Viewers Control Chaos" project that lets users change how my controller works using a Raspberry Pi 4. With a few tweaks I can apply some advanced macros like this. Though I could previously spoof button presses and joystick angles, the touchpad was only something that could be read. Recent hacking at code let me fake touchpad inputs so that I perform inhuman actions on the guitar.
