Maybe that was why he had more focus on the Newark Riots itself because even the fanbase can bitterly twist it into a sopranos prequel in a 2 hour movie format and lores, story and characters plots that would’ve fit in more in a tv series format more so than in a movie format. That’s why it felt so short and unfinished somewhat.

He should have just done that instead of making a Sopranos project. Although personally I'm tired of modern movies set in the 60's or older days going over racism and riots and what not, it comes off as pandering, direction-less and trying to push narratives. Like are you demonizing the act or glorifying it? And if you're not gonna give a definitive answer then don't do it at all. Raises a lot more questions as to why you're making a project like that in the first place.

Unfortunately, she’s absolutely right. I just finished watching this movie in the theater (I have HBO MAX but I was so exited and eager to see this film that I though I would be negligent not to experience it on the big screen). I was so angry when the credits started rolling that I found myself almost running back to the parking lot, as if I wanted to leave the whole experience behind as fast as I could. This whole movie felt as if someone at HBO decided to put together 120 minutes of flashbacks that were deleted from the show, somehow expecting it to magically come together, but the end result has no focus, no real depth, and worst of all, it seems to have no point. Even the actual flashbacks that were seen in the series (one of them was re-shot for this movie) were way better and more effective than anything you’re presented with here.
It’s really a pity, and I’m sure a lot of hard work was put into this movie, but it just doesn’t work, not remotely.
David Chase and his colleagues made what is arguably the best American television series in history, nobody can take that away from them, but this movie is a far, uninspiring cry from the groundbreaking achievement in storytelling that preceded it.

It committed what i call the greatest sin in screenwriting. Inclusion of too many plot lines. It not only bogs down the entire plot, but gives a bad taste to the viewer( I don't give a fu** about audience). The thing which solves this problem is the steady pace of handling 2 to 4 plot points in a movie. You follow more, you get less. This movie exactly suffers from that. Mind me, minimum 2 maximum 4, could be 5 too. You try to handle more, you jumble up. You lose track and then good movie becomes mediocre.

Ray Liota was simultaneously the best and worst of the film......he chewed up the scenery as the father, but gave a powerful and restrained performance as the twin brother/uncle. If they had thrown away the cliche trope of the twin brother and had cast a different actor as Dickie's father and let Liotta shine as the uncle, he could've gotten an Oscar nomination....because he was great as the uncle.

I thought it was kind of neat as a metaphore for the two sides of dickie, the selfish and criminal side, and the reserved idealistic side. By killing his father, he sort of dooms himself to become him, and he goes to his uncle in a desperate search for validation. He wants so badly to have his uncle tell him, "you're like me", but he never gets that validation. I guess you could still have that with two different actors, but It would be a little less stark. That might've been the only thing thing movie I unambiguously liked in the movie.

This review mirrors my reaction exactly. Perhaps Chase really wanted to make a film about the race riots and the only way he could get the money was to sell his baby's soul? I can only assume that this atonal mess was the result of some sort of Gangs of New York fracas between Chase and the producers (recall how Marty struggled to make a serious historical epic while Harvey demanded more sophomoric 'romance' between DiCaprio and Diaz?) The film feels similarly conflicted, vacillating between heavy-handed political messages about race and paper-thin fan service 'references' for Sopranos geeks. It lacks everything that made Sopranos great: the modernity, the zippy dialogue, the humour, the psychological and thematic nuance, the paradox of ultra-violent criminal behaviour lying cheek and jowl with Tony's double-life as a harassed husband and father...
Most of all, it lacks a compelling central performance to rival James Gandolfini's. Tony Soprano was obscenely charismatic and likeable even while doing the most monstrous things. You couldn't take your eyes off him. We were attracted, we were sympathetic, we were repulsed -- sometimes simultaneously. Nobody comes close to bringing the vitality of the players from the original series. The actors put in workmanlike performances here, but they have so very little to do other than to ape better performances from the show itself. Everything feels tepid, at least when compared with the original series. We watch Dicky do some appalling things, but we never feel any of the danger or unhinged threat we experienced from Sopranos characters like Ralph Cifaretto or Richie Aprile.
The film lurches into the queasy territory of unintentional self-parody whenever the actor who plays a 'young' Silvio is onscreen. This Silvio is the most hammy act of caricature I've witnessed in some time, like an animatronic puppet in a Sopranos theme park. (I enjoyed Maggie's reaction to him tremendously!)
The prison dialogues between Dicky and Sally Moltisanti seem a desperate writer's contrivance to recapture some of the iconic philosophical back-and-forth we saw between Tony and Melfi. It doesn't work, and we don't care.
Although I thought the film as a whole was an insipid missed opportunity, I do want to highlight one moment of true greatness where we glimpse some of the old Chase magic: the final frame where a young Tony pinky-swears his allegiance to his uncle's corpse and symbolically vows fealty to a self-destructive, death-obsessed gangster path. That shot is morbidly funny, surreal and insightful - a wonderful ending, and a taste of what might've been.

This is the only reviewed I've watched/listened to/read that is coming from an actual Sopranos fan who fairly criticizes this movie and even its necessity to be made. Everything else I've seen/heard has either been hard-core fans bending over backwards to defend it or distant viewers critiquing it without an understanding of what actually needs to be critiqued. As a hard-core fan myself, who has watched the series many times through, watches clips everyday, and will even watch the bad Sopranos fan channels and theories just to keep getting a taste, I cannot tell you how disappointed I was with this movie. I went to the theater last night to see it. I was hyped. My favorite show's prequel and my first time in a theater in a year and a half. As the movie played on, I kept feeling like: "so when are we going to start this thing?" It felt so rushed despite being 2 hours. It felt like none of the characters, even Dickie, really grew or showed themselves. it kinda felt like I was watching scenes from 10 different mob movies spliced into one... with very minimal linear aspects aside the characters and the show it is based on. What saddens me is many of themes within the movie felt like they could have been explored much more deeply on their own. Livia, who is played brilliantly, and Tony's relationship has some intregue here, but it is more cut scenes then fleshed out story line. The motives of Dicky's gf (Hollywood Dick's) wife, Giuseppina plays a major role but we never learn anything about her. She is beautiful, Italian, and seems to make romantic decisions based on attraction (maybe?). We never learn anything real about her background or motives. And the old characters sprinkled about the movie like Paulie and Pussy and Silvio feel more like a Sopranos greatest hits compilation album then thought-out characters. They oddly reminded me of the SNL skit "Sopranos Diaries." Not to mention, we never really get a deep dive into Dicky's antagonist in the film, Howard. While we can infer, based upon on our knowledge of the Newark riots and the larger Black Liberation movement; what the movie presents to us is a guy who heard a poem and decided he should own the Numbers game. It felt shallow, and a bit appropriative, placing Black Lib as the inspiration point for ownership of an exploitative criminal undertaking within black communities. Yet, with some back story, some understanding of conflict during their time together, the Harold and Dicky storyline could have been really interesting. There are other nitpicks that I won't get fully into, but I do want to add: how does a guy go to jail at 25 for killing a made man, and not end up in a compactor somewhere? Even if the cops get him first, with the connections the mob had in prison, even solitary (which he wasn't in) wouldn't have saved him. Anyway, thank you for the most honest and well thought out review. I look forward to exploring your channel more after watching this.

And from what it seems, there very well might be a sequel.

But at no point did I think it was an insult to the original show. David chase is directly involved, and tony is played by the original actors son. And I’m sure that was an emotional, cathartic experience for him to connect to his dad in that way. This is done by a lot of the original makers of the show. And yes, art is subjective so some people will hate it and some will love it, but I never thought this movie was an insult to the show itself.

The Sopranos did a much better job at handling Tony's backstory, because it was able to take the time to develop it without over explaining it.

So, I agree that the film has issues at the end in terms pacing with Jr and that the casting is at times jarring (though not always).
However, there is a lot of it that works because of a key thing: time.
    1) When Tony or any character recall the past in the show, it always left for interpretation whether it’s the whole truth. Keeping every character essential would not only be predictable, but the universe wouldn’t be able to expand.
    2) Most of characters have not reached an iconic status at this point in the story. While a few scenes with Jr. would’ve worked, I expected a slow build up to gain small bits of perspective.
There is something that is so alluring about the Sopranos world that works on film. The production design, cinematography, and tone. I was very happy walking out of the theater (yes, I’m that big of a sopranos that I went to theater to see it).
I agree with some of the things you mentioned, but I would still recommend it.

The Christopher Columbus episode really didn't work because native American politics aren't much of a factor in New Jersey, at least since the 18th Century. It might have worked in New Mexico or Oklahoma.
The 1967 Newark riots, however, are key to the state's identity and what it became in the 1970s and 1980s. To ignore them would be ludicrous.
I grew up in a suburb of Newark and went to a racially mixed high school, FWIW, and when my high school football traveled to Verona (the town Tony Soprano's mother lives in) the parents and cheerleaders threw garbage and screamed racial epithets for the entire game. This was in the mid 1980s. I was one of the only 3 white players on the team and it made the bus ride back home rather interesting. Let's just say I'm happy we won and everybody was in a good mood going home.
People in Alabama may have the reputation of being racist but New Jersey Irish and Italian Americans will give them a run for their money any day.

It’s so sad that David Chase who made such an unconventional show compromise into the “conditions” of today’s era just to make an “acceptable” movie? The Sopranos was unapologetic and raw in its depiction of opinions between character and the psychological, existential, social whatever issues it explores.
Beforehand, hearing there will be a movie really had me contemplating that it’s unnecessary. The series worked so exceptional because in its core it isn’t fully about the mob, but life itself. Separating them would mean that it’s drifting away from the very essence of it. Not saying that the mob part is weak, or the other strong. But it’s the very combination of these two that made it stand out so exceptional.
If you take other series that are about the one thing, Peaky Blinders for example. They take the one thing and just keep using plots to make it go forward because it’s so one sided theres no real exploration to make more things going on. A movie bout The Sopranos was doomed either way no matter good it would be, because the format can’t allow it. If it focused solely on Tony and his perception of things it could be better but still… Dickie is an indifferent character of his own, and the universe to have such a long movie about him and not in retrospect with Tony as the main character.
Political correctness and the forced entry of gays, black repressed characters or any minority is one the things that kinda makes me despise watching new movies. Just what is the point of shoving to our faces out of context? Fan service quotes being thrown here and there was so cringy. Silvios hair in the series isn’t supposed to be a wig, we know Van Zandt had surgery or something so it’s supposed to be “real”, making a mockery out of it again very cringy. Both his actor and Paulie’s were like SNL sketches, and even SNL did it better.
I hope this isn’t the start of a new movie series. Cause by definition it’s pointless. The series worked on an abstract level with the right amount of info given everytime. There’s no need for more exposition and cheap tricks like this movie. David Chase, im very disappointed in you.

I hear you loud and clear when it comes to the PC nature of today’s tv and movies. I thought Alessandro Nivola put in an exceptional performance though, best of the bunch.
I became aware of how overly swift (and by its nature, under nourishing) the film was becoming after the scene with the conversation between Tony and his mother about the sleeping medication. The depth of their love, hate relationship, the manipulative psychological/emotional battling so brilliantly depicted in the series all of a sudden felt condensed down to a near lip service scene that ultimately went nowhere (within the film).
Still, personally, as a fellow die hard fan of the series, I enjoyed it on the whole. I suppose it's a case of being able to take it or leave it for me, but I found myself gripped and involved throughout it. Some of your criticisms, though I have a tendency to agree with some of the more coruscating viewpoints (hmm, the young Silvio 🤔 Blech! 😜) I still feel you're being a touch harsh.
But I appreciate your passion on the subject 😉

I’ll probably appreciate it later if more is done with potential sequels but I really do think this story would’ve benefited if it was a series but I did enjoy this movie for what it was and as bad I wanna think Silvio was in the movie I think he’s just the person he was before stepping up in status that he was in the show which probably happened in the 80s. I did appreciate his performance in the scene when he was talking to dickie about tony. If anything the movie should’ve focused on Dickie and Harold’s rivalry and how it would have affected the family and how it could’ve let up to his death which they did kinda but it was rushed. Not a terrible movie but it would’ve been a really good show if it was stretched out into 1 season of a prequel series.

Watched it last night and sadly feel the same way. The story couldn’t stand on its own two feet and instead resorted to callbacks and cliches.
I thought if they reigned in the scope to taking place over a few weeks (maybe during the riots) instead of years there might have been more of chance of it having better structure and not feeling so rushed. There was potential for some interesting commentary on race and the feeling of a culture being replaced but that ended up being one of the most confounding elements of the film. The entire riots were basically used as a plot point to depose of a body.
