- Follow along our adventures diving in Kona for a day. We flew over from Honolulu and rented a boat from Kona Boat Rentals to spearfish and check for wildlife on the Kona coast. We absolutely scored with an encounter from such a rare species! Possibly the most beautiful clips my camera has ever had the pleasure of recording!
Shoutout to Taylor and Wayne for the help in captaining the boat, spotting wildlife, and filming some of the footage in this video!

On the rarest of occasions! Thank you bro!
Lived in kona for 25+ years and had a custom built Force 30 and was commercial fishing. I'm a professional photographer and cinematographer and specializing in underwater work of sharks and marine mamals. I used to help the Pacific whale foundation out a lot, and yes, seeing sperm whales off the kona coast, is extremely rare!!!! My friend used to always ask me to see how close to the big island I would see them, and he worked for the foundation and knew they rarely or never were seen close, like all the humpback whales. I'd see the sperm whales over 100 NM out, but never in close. So that's extremely rare what you guys saw and encountered!!! Of note: there are very strict Federal laws on how close you are allowed to come to marine mamals, and your footage is proof that you violated them most likely and if they come after you and prosecute, you could be fined enormous amounts of money including going to prison plus total seizure of all your gear etc. Be careful. I'm born and raised in Hawaii and living in the islands my whole life surfing diving and spearfishing and commercial fishing since the early 70's. I was born in 1960 on the North Shore of Oahu and grew up there back when Hawaii was so nice and uncrowded with cane fields everywhere and few people!!! I lived on Kauai for many years then moved to the big island to pursue my dream and get my boat built and commercial fish for my living. Used to spend 80% of most years out at sea fishing, as I went on 4-5 day trips and went to the most remote areas off the big island where I rarely ever saw other boats! Been a waterman in Hawaii my whole life. I used to dive with and film marine mamals and sharks from way back before the feds made laws! When they did I made sure I had the federal permits plus I worked for and with friends who had grants for research, as I had a great boat and years of local experience and knowledge in the ocean in Hawaii!!! Just be careful. People have been arrested and fined and had full seizure of their boats and gear, including prison time!!! Basically lost everything including there home and vehicles etc. Know before you go!!! Back in the days before there was o restrictions and laws and I'd often be out in an are where there were no boats or people anywhere for miles. The researchers and marine biologists know people like myself who spent so much time on the ocean saw the most amazing and rare things, and they always asked us for information as we knew and saw more than anyone!!!! Made some great friends and helped with a lot of research for them with all my years of experience!!!!! Been freedive spearfishing most of my life! Enjoy, just be careful about the laws and regulations to avoid serious trouble!!!
Be safe
Aloha from beautiful Hawaii

Josh, read all the comments carefully.
Shibi is Japanese not Hawai'ian.
Dang, you're right! Thank you for the correction!
In Hawaii its a mishmash of Hawaiian and Japanese fish names. .We all know it's the same fish.@@JoshDaMunoz
Nice, but I hate to be one to correct you. The Blue whale is the largest predator and sperm whales are on the increase since the banning of whaling in the majority of counties.
I'm fully aware that both Google and Wikipedia claim that the sperm whale is the largest but they are technically wrong. Blues hunt both schools of small fish(eg.anchovies, sardines) and plankton. Plankton is made up of both animal (zooplankton)and plant (phytoplankton) life. The fact is, Blue whales actively hunt for these life forms which makes them a predator.
Touche!
Largest-toothed predator whale!
Nice try click baiters but the Great White Shark is the largest predatory fish on Earth, and I saw nothing like that in your useless video!
Yes, a great white is the largest predatory fish. This is the largest predator that is a mammal...not click bait.
Actually, a whale shark might even be considered the largest predatory fish...
@@JoshDaMunoz Maybe you should have lead with that. I clicked on your video thinking I was going to see a huge great white.
Well I do have great white footage I could share ;)
@@JoshDaMunoz That would be cool.
