    Thanks for the overview! I'm a video guy, and since you almost sort of asked for input: Camera setup is fine - just a little overexposed this time (too bright). I noticed that autofocus was a little slow to track. If that can be sped up then it works well. The 'macro' shots are great! The position of the watch in relation to the overhead lights could be adjusted to reduce the glare on the crystal (move your workspace if the lights can't be moved). As for the background, the wood works fine in my book. You could always slap a big ol Long Island Watch branded desk pad on the table.

    • @islandwatch
      @islandwatch  Před 2 lety +4

      Thank you - it's a prime 35mm lens (macro). I guess the AF speed is a function of the camera? (EOS R). I did notice the AF takes a while. Lighting I do need to play with and will. When it's over exposed, how do you recommend I rectify? Turn down the ISO? Close the aperture a bit? Or screw with shutter? Here's where I am - F16, ISO 4000, 1/60 shutter speed.
      Feel free to email us to continue to convo if easier.

    • @adventurepromo
      @adventurepromo Před 2 lety +5

      @@islandwatch If the depth of field is where you want it, then turn the ISO down to a lower setting. 4000 is very high. You could bump it way down and likely open up your aperture (to a 'lower' f number') but I don't shoot macro lenses so I'm not sure of all the implications. Typically this would cause more background blur. Shutter speed is fine and will probably remain 1/60 for everything you do. I did a quick search of your camera and adjusting autofocus speed and found this:
      1. Change to (or make sure that you are in) Video Mode
      2. Menu: AF, item 3, second row "Movie Servo AF speed"
      Speed can be set (to various degrees of slowness) in one-point AF. This is available only when a "lens compatible with slow AF adjustment" is used, otherwise AF speed will fall back to "normal".

      Well done Mark for diving into a new camera set up. Yes, hopefully you’ve been able to play around with the AF settings. There are SO many AF parameters to play with now, it’s a bit complicated.🤪 As you’re in the US, I’d keep the shutter speed at 1/60 (NTSC). Exposure was a bit hot (bright). I agree, I’d turn the ISO down (colours and definition would become a tad better too). Or perhaps the lighting could be turned down a little- they don’t need to be on full blast (if they are). Or, you could keep the light intensity level the same, but use some diffusion on the lights to soften the light a little. This will lower the light level a bit, so you may not need to adjust exposure settings that much. Mirrorless/Dslr camera’s do need a bit of light for the AF to behave properly. So it’s down to some trial and error in your ‘spare time’ to see what works best with your set up. And perhaps a darker background to make the watches pop more (and then a lighter background for the dark PVD watches).😅 Congrats though. Love your channel .

    Since you asked, I suggest a darker background, maybe a dark mahogany, walnut, rosewood, or even ebony back ground to give the white gloves and watches more contrast. I think the maple background makes everything too light, much darker would give better contrast, definition, and bring the eyes more in focus to the watch and really make it pop. Thanks for the videos.

    Marc, after I saw your Instagram post , I knew I have to see it in person. I went to the Amsterdam Seiko Boutique during my holiday to see it person and booooy, was I in love. Immediately bought it, and cannot stop looking at this dial. I have the feeling, every time I stare at it, I can see different colors. Yes, the watch is not perfect, and some things could be made better by Seiko, but this dial makes everything else irrelevant in my opinion. I haven't seen such dial even in watches that cost 4-5 times as much, as this one.

    If you have a camera you can change lenses on, B&H shows "minimum focusing distance" on the "specs" section of lenses for sale. Or you can frame things farther away, and if you shoot in 4k you can crop the video to 1080p whenever you want. Very useful.
    Otherwise I think it looks good!

    Over the years I preferred the Baby Tuna over the Monster. In this case, I prefer the Monster.
    I don't know what was going through Seiko's mind but, that is NOT a Baby Tuna (reference the 46.5mm SRP637). At first glance, it reminds me of the old Seiko 5 Bottle Caps.

    • @TheBimmer74
      @TheBimmer74 Před 2 lety +1

      I tried this baby tuna onto my 7 & 1/4 inch wrist and it wears like a 38 mm and just looks too small. I agree with you that Seiko should have kept the 46.5 mm design that SRP637 had as it maintained a nicer presence on the wrist, similar to the Monster. So it looks like I will have to go with the Monster I want to enjoy this new dial.

    A black velvet or matte black background would help a lot, both from making the watches pop, and making it easier to get your exposure and white balance right, It'll also make your autofocus much easier. Even something like a board painted with Black 2.0 or vantablack would make the watch and your hands the absolute sole focus of your video

    Wouldn’t a black felt make a better background? The dark background would high contrast the edges of most watches, it wouldn’t work with black cases but most watch cases aren’t PVD coated. Felt would not reflect glare either. BTW, I'm not a camera or photo expert, so I could be wrong, but it makes sense. Also, a lot of people are using turntables for closeups.
