The #1 objective should be championships, not just prep for the NBA. He has encouraged so many kids to leave early that never got drafted. If they stayed another year or two, who knows how that would have changed their trajectory. The program has really slipped the last 5 or 6 years.

I can’t help but notice how we’ve stopped utilizing styles of play (e.g., lobs and alley oops a la our 2011-12 championship year). I think maybe his assistant coaches that started with him at Kentucky were doing most of the “heavy lifting” when it came to actually coaching.

Calipari is trying to be a salesman. He is trying to sell the UK faithful that this horrible loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament was nothing more than bad luck. What else could it be when the best 3-pt shooting team in the nation, can't seem to buy a basket? Cal tells us that only bad luck could explain the reason why Oakland was nailing their 3's and UK only made a few. Hopefully, the reporters will be sure to ask Cal, why he couldn't teach his massive pool of basketball talent how to play a bit of defense.
I could have bought Cal's excuse back in mid-February. (I think I did.) However, I just can't buy it now. Everybody knows how much talent and how much potential this team had. Yet there were too many upsets that made no sense and these upsets happened way too frequently. Yet the sports reporters never asked Cal why does KY have to score 90 to 100 points every game in order to win. Furthermore, Cal had just used this same lame excuse to explain the dreadful loss to Texas A&M 5 days prior to this fiasco. The loss to Texas A&M wasn't even a weak old, yet they forced the Wildcats out of the SEC Tournament without winning a game. Tonight Oakland forced the Wildcats out of the NCAA Tournament without KY winning a single game.
Although the UK Calipari era, started off with a National Championship in 2012, KY's more recent adventures in the NCAA Tournament have been rather dismal especially when one compares them to most of UK's past performances in The Big Dance. When Calipari took the reigns at UK over a decade ago, UK's basketball team was the most winningest team in NCAA history. Not anymore. Calipari may have been the highest paid BB coach in the NCAA, but the coaches at Kansas, UNC, Duke, etc. were winning more games and National Championships. Although KY is still 2nd in the country for most NCAA championships, it has been 12 years since they won a National Championship. However, KY's peers Kansas, DUke, North Carolina, etc. have won at least one Championship this decade.
We can knock Calipari's ability to win and even his ability to coach, but Calipari can definitely brag about one accomplishment that he truly excels at. As of March 2024, Kentucky leads all other universities when it comes to past university players who are currently playing in the NBA. Right now KY leads the pack with 28 players currently in the NCAA. They are followed by Duke with 24, UCLA with 16, Kansas with 12, North Carolina with 11, and Gonzaga with 10. For much of the past decade Gonzaga has been the team to beat, yet UK currently has 28 players in the NBA and Gonzaga only has 10. It seems like Calipari has a knack for attracting players who want to use UK as a pit-stop to the NBA. I remember in 1993, when UK players were devastated when they narrowly missed upsetting favorite Duke for a spot in the Final Four. Pelphrey, Farmer, Feldhaus, and Mashburn wanted to win a NCAA Championship for UK more than anything. When Rob Dillingham, who had an off-game against Oakland, started throwing up bad shots toward the end of the game, I have to wonder if his desperate heaves was an attempt to keep UK's NCAA dreams alive, or if he was more worried that if he didn't increase his point total in his final performance for UK, he might slip a couple of spots in this years' NBA draft.
Cal has said many times that he will take talent over experience any time. While he still excels at recruiting top--notch talent, both fans and experts alike wonder if he is still a top-notch coach. Perhaps, he has too much young talent and needs to focus on finding a few players who are willing to spend 2 or 3 years in college if it is better for them in the long run. Or perhaps, his "one and done reputation" has become a magnet for attracting the kind of player that cares more about money than winning. While Calipari may still be the best, or among the best, at recruiting top-notch talent, many think that his coaching skills are not what they used to be.
In my opinion, KY fans, which includes myself, need to do some serious soul-searching. Do we want to be known as the school that puts the most players in the NBA? Or would we prefer to have a few more NCAA Championship banners hanging from the rafters in Rupp Arena? If we still want to be the school that has won more NCAA Championships than anybody other than UCLA, I suggest we find a replacement for Calipari within the next year or two. Otherwise, North Carolina and Duke will be #2 and #3 and UK will have dropped to #4 when it comes to schools with the most NCAA championship banners.
Personally, I say get rid of Cal now!! I've been saying this for several years now. I've been saying this, and with each and every year that passes, he slowly devalues the UK brand a bit more. Perhaps, we can look to Louisville for some help. Maybe Louisville, who currently reeks of desperation when it comes to finding a quality head coach, will come to UK's rescue and buy out what's left of Cal's ridiculously expensive contract. Perhaps, we can shame them into this. Remember how happy U of L fans were when they picked up Pitino. They were so happy because they had the once beloved UK Coach, who had ditched UK for the Pro's, only to return to KY, but as the coach of U of L. However, the Pitino they inherited wasn't the same Pitino that UK once had. In the end, Pitino shamed U of L and UK fans got the last laugh. In fact, UK fans are still laughing and U of L fans want revenge. We need to convince them that they can get the last laugh if they steal Cal. Otherwise, we may be stuck with Cal for quite some time.
Some will argue that UK can't fire Cal because of his ridiculously high contract. They argue we can't fire Cal because it will cost UK a small fortune for violating the terms of his contract. Just remember that Cal is causing UK to lose money right now. He is devaluing the UK brand.

lol, is just me, I don’t really watch sports anymore, like every thing else in this country, it’s hard to find things with enough integrity, and decency to actually find myself actually wanting to get emotionally invested enough to cheer for an organization. But just watching the highlights, this 14 seed look just as big as KY. IMO you use to be able to notice a size difference between 1,2,3 vs 14, 15, 16. May not just seem so to me, also seems defensive slow, like nba, use to see more effort in college, it want nice to see young men working hard. And playing great especially when a high 1,2, or 3 didn’t want to get embarrassed by a 14, but I’m glad they took the stigma away from losing and being an awful lazy player, that way everyone on the floor can just encourage one another… so everyone can chill cause let’s not worry about winning just play a pressure free game void of all judgement … wait that one white kid.. it’s he going a little overboard? Is playing to aggressive? Did you see him stick out his tongue? Are we even allowed to root for him he’s white? This might be construed as racist if he’s playing well? Or the play-by-play guys even Steer any attention his way? Maybe we can disqualify Oakland for the rest of the tournament?

Geesh. Nothing has changed at all with Ky fans since I was a kid watching them play. I was born and raised in London Ky and the fans have always been so wishy washy. 1-2 losses and it’s, “Time to fire the coach!”
People who make those remarks just show me they’re the ones who’ve never played competitive sports or had kids who played competitively.
I have a daughter who has been playing elite volleyball for years. Giving her heart to it. These kids care SO much, they get anxious. It’s performance anxiety. My daughter dealt with it for a 1-1.5 years on and off. She looked like she had never touched a ball when she was in her head like that. It drove me crazy!
So because I’ve seen performance anxiety in so many girls over the years while watching my daughter play, I was able to spot it in Reed, Dillingham and Ivisic a few times this season. During the Oakland game it was glaringly obvious. There was a moment when they showed Reed on the screen after a shot and his face and body screamed NERVES! Mental game is as important as skill.
This loss was not coach Cals fault. The boys choked because they’re young and inexperienced and let their anxiety get the best of them. If you noticed, Reeves and Mitchell were the two top scorers that game. They’re also the two older boys with experience. They were cool and collected.
This team was a great team. Highly skilled and would’ve won if they’d had their minds right. I guarantee they learned a lesson through this game though and I’m proud of them for a fun season either way.
Ky fans, you should stop saying you “Bleed Blue” if you can’t hang when the goin gets tough.
