      Hope it helps! Board Game Bliss in Scarborough just cut their price on the game pretty heftily, so i'm hoping there are a bunch of new Black Angel owners who will find this useful.

    I have a question: can you only use the red cubes to activate your technologies directly after you use your action to repair the ship or can you do it any time you want as long as you have the cubes in your storage?

    I bought this game because of hype. I could never figure out how to play it. Seeing this video, I realize I made a mistake. Not my kind of game. Or rather, I already own enough games of this kind that are easier to play and have a theme and mechanics that make more sense.
    I would rather play Merchants of the Dark Road or Underwater Cities for placing dice or placing workers.
    But your guide is great I'm subscribing to your channel.

      Thanks so much! And that’s an important realization. This is by the team behind Troyes, which many people have told me does the same things, but better.

  • @Mattchew2232

    How would you rank this game? And thanks for the video! You have some of the best rules explanations, and are always my go to. : )

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  Před 2 lety +9

      Thanks, Mattchew. Maybe more useful than a ranking would be to suggest who this game is for, and who it's not for.
      The 35+ minute teach should already be a clue that if you're not into a pile of rules, it won't be your bag. Unfortunately, i haven't played my copy of Troyes yet, so i can't compare the two (the same three guys designed both titles). My wife found the black tech tile scoring rules very confusing, which is why i spent so much time on it.
      i liked the game. The game it most closely reminds me of is Lords of Waterdeep. Both games are worker placement (though this one uses dice). They both have action spaces. They both have a way to buy/build more action spaces which, if other players use them, provide their original founder a kickback, or residual payment. i like that mechanic, and was sad to see the kickback idea was missing from Lost Ruins of Arnak.
      The conveyor belt/tile thing on your personal board makes for a nice puzzle. The idea that you can use your cards to either activate your tiles, or save them to become potential worker placement spots in space, reminds me of Race for the Galaxy, where you can either build your cards or use them as cash, and making that decision can be a little agonizing (in a fun way). The whole thing is very thinky. i've only played once so far, but we messed up the ravager stuff and kept forgetting to activate the ravager penalties when we used different action spaces. i might play this on a stream in the near future to help you and others get a better sense of it, because i know a rules video doesn't usually do that job very well.

      @@NightsAroundaTable Ah, thanks for such a wonderful, thoughtful comment! I thought your response would be brief (if any), so I really appreciate your kindness.
      Yes, it definitely seems like a crunchy game. I tend to like analytical games (Everdell and Concordia are some of my favourites- Everdell being my most!), but in this stage of my life with young children it's hard for my wife and me to invest in a new long game with a complexity of rules. Everdell tends to hit that sweet spot of being fairly short, challenging, and absolutely beautiful.
      Anyways, I will definitely keep an eye out on your content (as always!), and I'll see if this one will become a potential buy.

    • @NightsAroundaTable
      @NightsAroundaTable  Před 2 lety +3

      @@Mattchew2232 Everdell is my favourite too!
      It's interesting: in September, i made a video on Rahdo's channel for Drop Drive, which hit Kickstarter the same day as Mindclash's Voidfall. Both are games set in outer space, but there's a vast difference in the time commitment each game requires. i think Voidfall is the game we all wished we had time for, but Drop Drive is the game we *actually* have time for - especially with young kids!
      But speaking of Mindclash, look into Anachrony. The play time is surprisingly short for the scope it describes, and it, too, brings that sci fi crunchiness!
