Let's face it. Every kid wanted to be superman back in the day
Yeah 😢
I still want to be Superman.. .I'm 51 😞
Same here and still do my favorite superhero then it's The Flash
Everybody would like to be like Superman.
If your Superman movie doesn’t make every kid want to be Superman, then you did it wrong.
The effects usually date a movie, these effects are it's charm.
they were better then all this CGI crap today. this is when people took pride in making films
You're looking at things the wrong way
2:42 agreed
The original also looks way better than the god awful F/X used in Superman 4. Apparently the studio of that film really cut corners and barely gave them enough money to make the film. It definitely shows too.
@@coolcat6303 yip. They also cut about an hour from the movie, which is why it makes no sense. Such a shame for Chris's last outing as the man of steel 😪 Still, at least we'll always have the original.
You have to LOVE that look on his face when the rocket goes around him! That’s pure 5 secs of Superman having a true, “What the hell???” Moment!
In today's time it would be WTF
..
@@sohambhaduri235 I don’t even know why I didn’t even think of that 🤣 I hadn’t seen the moving in so long, seeing that part again and that pure look of 😶 WTF?!😐
That's the bit that only shows in the extended version. In the regular version, you only see Superman chasing the missile from behind.
@@jimdigitalvideo Really? Why cut out a part like that? Totally adds more! 😁👍
@@feywinterfox9630 you’re right. It certainly explains why he has to get it from behind.
It's not just the movie, the music score is what makes it special.
John Williams was just becoming a household name. Just think: after this, "Empire Strikes Back" and "Raiders!"
Agreed! It´s was the time of the greatest composers of all time: Morricone, Horner, Goldsmith, Williams. It´s all there!
He** yeah!!!!
everything iz real art!
Corny and outdated
Love how Luthor is trying to nuke his other nemesis, his mother in law...
Jim Vick it’s the reason why it was heading there 😂
@@obamatrollgaming3792 I thought so ! Thank you. Hes no fool why out of any part of the north east he would not have randomly picked hackensack nj. The mother I'm sure didnt approve of her daughters boyfriend. For many years when I passed hackensack I always think of this movie.
They’re not a couple. Why do you think he calls her Ms. Tessmucher and not her name. She’s just a groopy, probably a run away. He’s just psychotic.
@@charles1203 Not like Jesse Eisenberg's was in Batman vs Superman Dawn Of Justice
"No man in the sky intervened to deliver me from daddy's fist and abominations!" Lex Luthor Batman vs Superman Dawn Of Justice
I love how Superman smashes through several layers of thick concrete to escape and Lex doesn't even feel it
how do you know? that scene was just a few seconds.
Also since he knew he had another missile to stop; why wouldn't Superman just detonate the 1st one with his heat vision over a desolate area?
1:38 me too.
@@williamhaynes4800 Ecological damages to consider.
That's Super Man !!!!! Lol!!!!
That music is so incredibly great. John Williams really did a spectacular job.
Technically speaking... Jaws, E.T., Star Wars, CE3K & Raiders are just as good but this is still my all time fav score of his. It just really gets your blood pumping and fits the movie so damn perfectly.
That's the reason this is my favorite movie.
The man is nothing short of a musical genius.
toddster119 me too.
John Williams is the greatest musical composer of the 20th Century.
He may be wet, but he flies so fast that he may dry up in just few seconds.. that's badass
When I was a kid running around the house pretending to fly I would put one arm out to fly slow and 2 arms out to fly super fast...loved this movie every time it came on tv I would watch...
3:24 that shot still looks good 44 years later
I love this cut of Superman: The Movie because it shows him actually catching up to the rocket. They mentioned earlier that they couldn’t shoot the rockets down due to the low-level guidance system which explains why it avoided Superman when he attempted to stop it head-on.
So much attention to detail on top of a really exciting, fast-paced action scene. The newer effects may look better, but they just don’t capture this same intensity. Plus, the amazing John Williams score puts it over the top.
Lex Luthor screaming Miss Teschmacher will never get old. A true classic and treasure.
Christopher Reeve is the best Superman of all time.
Easily Reeves is THE Superman
hands down
michael jordan is d'best of all time...#goat
Same goes to the late Margot Kidder as the BEST Lois Lane and late Jackie Cooper as BEST Perry White

"New Jersey? Hell's in New Jersey?" Lol. I'm originally from NJ and thought this was hilarious!
Kevin Hilley 2:51 that’s from the east coast.
I live in New Jersey and he’s right lol. Ain’t shit hear besides malls and pizzarias
@@magilla2282 - and diners! Don't forget the diners! LOL
At 3:16 - that is the face of a real superhero on a mission! I love this scene - no one has ever flown as gracefully as Chris Reeve.
3:38 me too.
Did anyone else notice John Ratzenberger, who played Cliff on Cheers, sitting at the radar screen?
Kris Webb
He was in Superman 1 and 2
Yep I noticed that.
I just now noticed that lol and I was going to comment on that till I saw yours. I've watched the superman films for years and I didnt even notice it till recently.
And the voice of ham from toy story and other pixar films
He was also one of the engineers in the sci-fi film Outland that over doses in the beginning of the film
I love Miss Tessmacher's question. She has a good heart as she proved in saving Superman's life but she was brainwashed by Lex
YES Evil is Always Perceived as Class Culture But in the END Death
I was a bit surprised that she was back on Luther's side in Superman II
She's still pretty evil, she only did it to save her mother, she was ok with people dying before it affected her
1:34secs and 3:11secs, one of the BEST Superman moments in movie history! Damn, even today he looks frigging amazing when he flies. Look at him! He looks sick!! Another scene that made me wish I was Superman was when he responded to Lex Luthor calling his via a higher sound frequency. Yes, the scene he jumped out of the building and flew around the metropolis. DAMN, the amount of time I wished that was me... I wanted to be Superman until I saw the chaotic ungraceful flying in Man of Steel. damn.
EPIC MOMENTS INDEED!
EAprima Richard Donner and everyone involved with the making of the movie did a phenomenal job. And Yes, the "high frequency" scene is my favorite as well but I was surprised to find out Donner did not like that particular scene. I wonder why?
He didn't like it? Madness. That scene is one of the very ones that made every child wish they were Superman including me! That scene is epic as fu*k! Damn, he has no idea how many times I tried to recreate that very scene in my dreams as myself as Superman. Even looking at it again as an adult, it isn't the nostalgia that kept me glued, it was still the epicness of that scene. Gosh, I wonder why he didn't like it either. What a pity.
EAprima yeah, I watched the movie with the commentary and that's where he mentioned it. I was only 5 when my folks took me to see it in theaters. I was too young to remember but only recall a few scenes. Yet, I left the theater and became a HUGE fan. I ended getting the movie cards, lunch box, mug, Mego figure etc... I'm so glad I can say that my folks took me to see it in early '79 and for that, I'll always love them.
Both time frames you've selected are for me also one of the best flying scenes in any superman film period!
The coordination of his movements when flying are like a science, knowing when to switch which arm position to indicate where his next flying direction will be...just excellent. Kudos to Christopher Reeves. Not to mention the excellent score by John Williams also complimenting the flying scenes, by enhancing the visual sequence making it feel more heroic. I remember rewinding the VHS copy my parents bought in the early 80's at least 1000 times on these flying scenes. That tape eventually wore out in those sections making it almost unviewable...ahh the good old VHS times! hah... :D
Love it when Lex Luther calls for Ms Tesmacher 😅😅😅😅😅
LOL
Superman appealing to Miss Tessmacher's better nature to help him save everyone, true to his word he goes to NJ first, and that gentle stroke of her face...this scene starts off sublime.
When the guy said what the hell is in New Jersey, the ironic thing is in the comics Gotham city is in New Jersey.
I never knew that. Gotham was NJ? How?
@@4rcgv it takes up where New Jersey occupies in the real world but it is modeled more like New York and boston
@@thatrandomguy9841 Its not boston or NJ its NYC Just like Metropolis is NYC too
@@4rcgv - I think it's supposed to be where real world Jersey City, NJ is.
well, at least the missile will reduce crimes in America by 80%
R.I.P. Christopher Reeve
Look at him flyin, hes not acting at all ! That is Superman!!
For those who don't realize, that's Cliff from Cheers and the guy who does all the Pixar films, John Ratzenberger, sitting there. He played another role in the second Superman film.
From missile control to mission control.
One thing that's noticeable is that you can actually feel Chris Reeve's presence while he flies. The newer CGI flights may technically 'look' better, but so often I feel disconnected when I just see a blur off the screen. The techniques used on Christopher Reeve here make even the most intense flight scenes feel intimate.
Compare that to Brandon Routh's flying scenes as he tries to save Metropolis. It just doesn't feel the same.
That's because Christopher Reeve could really fly! LOL
Actually, I read that Christopher Reeve was a licensed pilot, so he understood flight dynamics and figured how to manipulate his body to simulate how a man would actually fly. You can especially see it when he moves his hands and arms. Subtle movements that make a world of difference.
That first scene where we see Superman in the Fortress of Solitude, when Superman flies towards the camera, banks left and flies off... that turn was all Reeve. I saw in an interview that he surprised the hell out of the rigging crew when he did that. LOL
Brandon Routh simulated swimming so maybe that's the reason.
@@jackthegreek6092 - That makes sense. In the behind the scenes footage they showed Routh practicing how to fly in a swimming pool.
Zack Snyders man of steel had the best flying scene according to me
they dont look better they look terrible
I remember the media catchphrase from the day before this movie was released: "Tomorrow... You'll believe a man can fly".
3:25 notice how the music at this point is a variation of the theme where he's racing against the train as young Clark earlier in the movie.
Tempo is slower.
When Superman crashes threw the roof and that music. Such an iconic scene.
Still the best Superman ever made. Valerie as beautiful as ever.
02:18 Lois is driving like 150 mph while changing radio stations! lol
That's how it was in the 70s lol
1:35 the greatest superhero of all time
YES!!! Epic moment! The Best!
It such a great setup that is missing from the recent movies. It's a very small thing but the music that sets it up and how he moves
Im a new gen kid and i dont get it why that scene was great. Can anypne explain to me?
Because it was the perfect mix of music and cinematography. The main issue is directors rely too much on CGI today. In the Man of Steel the scenes are so quick you can barely keep up with them. Too me the lift off scenes in Superman are excellent. There is another scene where Superman brings Lex to a prison and Superman says were all part of the same team. He lifts off. It feels so much more authentic. It's more about building a relationship with your audience. Man of Steel is more like an Arcade game you play a couple times then you're done with. Superman is like a great rpg that holds up over time.
@@SteveGiome because you've been raised on rip-offs like Thor and Iron Man. This was IT. This is the alpha and omega of superheroism. Superman. This movie is the Holy Bible of superhero movies. Admittedly, Henry Cavill is probably more your Superman, and I like Henry, but Christopher Reeve BECAME Superman for real to many kids who grew up in the 80's. You had to grow up on it. We were lucky. In the comics, when Doomsday killed Supes, you thought about it being THIS guy. When the Reign of the Supermen happened, it was breakoff versions of THIS incarnation. It's just an amazing movie and the flying scenes are incredible. IMO STM is up there with Jaws and Star Wars.
If it wasn’t for this extended scene, I would never have known Superman actually caught up ahead of the rocket. All we had been seeing is Superman escaping Lex’s place and chased the rocket
It made sense in the extended version, considering where Superman was in relation to the missiles. The NJ-bound missile would be heading in his general direction, being that Metropolis is essentially NYC.
3:24 Love that shot.
The original ending was supposed to be that missile broke out zod & co & left them flying towards earth as a cliffhanger. The world being turned was supposed to end part 2.
1:36 Good thing a lump of concrete didn't fall on her head making her dead.
For this reason, he said* Stand aside now*
Yea he told the bitch to step aside. Its her dumb fault for standing around like a fucking stupid blonde.
Imagine if Doomsday popped up from somewhere after she threw the green ball away. 😁

He’ll always be Superman to me
So glad someone put SUPERMAN 3-hour version on CZcams
"I wouldn't stay here either" Superman knew Lex would be mad and Miss Tessmacher would feel his wrath. A deleted scene showed that she did not take Superman's advice and was very nearly fed to whatever monster Lex had been keeping down that shaft.
Yeah right
The babies
Lions. Which makes zero sense...but yeah lions in a pit under Park Avenue.
@@victorpradha9946 Because Lex put them there. It's not as if the movie is saying lions just randomly live in a pit in an abandoned train station.
Makes you wonder why Lex didn't toss Superman in with the babies after exposing him to the kryptonite. He'd be weakened and his body would've been easily devoured by whatever was in there. Bye, bye Superman.
That's still crazy how that missile gave Superman a hard time, talk about a tough challenge, and the radar guys tracking the missiles wondering why it's heading the Jersey, nice reaction by all of them
El mejor Superman de la historia Cristopher Reeve...
The one power that nobody talks about... Instant dry suit when it gets wet
As fast as he flew, he was dry before he got to the Metropolis skyline.
@@toddster119 Air friction will do that to you!
"Poetic Licence lovey ,Poetic Licence"😎
Flying at thousands of MPH dries you off fast.
The man is flying at similar speeds to an SR71 blackbird, which in its early flights stripped off the original paint due to heat from atmospheric friction, hence, dry superman :) Of course this does also beg the question why his suit isn't incinerated in moments with a resultant balls naked superman hurtling over metropolis moments later but there you go.
I like trying to put a logic to things. Great movies, from a great actor, playing a great superman.
Reeve still the best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor was a worm. And so much fun to watch because of the right mix of melodrama, real drama and comedy. And then there's the toupee. 😆
Her mother. Personal self interest. Lol. EXCELLENT film
It’s amazing that Christopher Reeve had to actually learn to fly and chase a missile.
GGI has made it too easy for todays actors.
my god how epic those superman mouvies was
I love how Lex knew exactly who to blame as soon as he saw the bomb diverted.
Theres such a good sense of speed in this that just doesn't translate so well in the new films.
The new stuff has him flying fast way too often. I like it better when he's visible when he's flying away or landing over the sudden explosive takeoffs and slamming into the ground for landings.
3.25 best scene i watched this epic in the cinema 1978 two guys sat behind me & my mates we heard them saying bet you see the wires they left that movie open mouthed 😉😉
Haha, that's great. Yeah I think ILM worked on this and they were the best of the best at that time. But I also give credit to director Richard Donner for the realism as well. He actually made signs, and would post them all over the set, that had the word "verisimilitude"on them. That basically means: "Be truthful. Honor the source material. Believe it and take it seriously."
@@coolcat6303 ILM had nothing to do with the effects in this movie.
@Starscream91 The Dykstra ILM people were working on the ABC Battlestar Galactica (then) miniseries in 1978 when Superman was in post production. Zoran Perisic, who was a joint winner of an Academy Award, created the Zoptic system that was used for a lot of the flying sequences. www.fxphd.com/blog/effects-of-days-past-making-superman-fly/
@Starscream91 Why are you questioning this? ILM had nothing to do with Superman and that's a fact. If you're going to argue with someone, at least do your research first, so you don't end up making yourself look stupid!

That moment Superman looks down at earth after deflecting first missile. Priceless. Great movie
Mrs. Teschmacher....can get it!!
(lol) " THE POWER OF VITALIS..... Superman's hair never moved, even while soaring into Earth's upper stratosphere. "
It's the epic part where he bursts from below ground, flys up & makes that right tilted turn with the left arm to head west that always does it for me
The 3 hour cut is a mess with overly long shots of walking and clunky dialogue, but this is one scene that should have been reinstated, since it actually fixes a plot hole.
The 3h versions it's a curiosity but not for watching the movie to discover it or re-watch because it's too much long and that destroy the spectacle.
The 3hr cut is a masterpiece, stfu.
@@bufflatino5121 There's no editing, it's just raw footage put on a DVD. I liked it for what it was, sequential deleted scenes, but it doesn't make a good movie in of itself.
Which plot hole does it fix?
@@shelbyvillerules9962 Ok, so there's two missiles heading east and west and Superman is in Metropolis which is on the east coast, so why in the theatrical cut do we see him chasing the east-bound missile when he should have been thousands of miles ahead of it? This deleted scene shows that he tried to head off the missile, but it dodged him(low level avoidance system, as Cliff Claven the missile control room guy said).
in the comics the kryptonite doesn't affect him that much since he can still use his powers only decreased alot i saw him use heat vision while exposed to it
Actually, in the comics it affects him more. He can only use his powers when he is initially exposed. But as the kryptonite radiation forces the solar radiation out of his cells, which is why it hurts him, the impenetrable solar aura that surrounds him (which is what gives him his invunerablility) fades away and he can be hurt like anyone else as he weakens from the kryptonite. With long term exposure he completely loses his superpowers all together. Eventually his skin will turn green. By that time, he has reached a point where he can no longer recover without sunlight and he will fall into a coma and die soon after.
In part 3 the kryptonite made him evil. So it affects him in different ways
@@briandiggs3508 That kryptonite was manufactured, because tar was used as a substitute for an unknown element in genuine kryptonite. As such, it didn't work as intended, affecting Superman more like Red K does as opposed to the original Green K.
Yeah I remember watching this in the theater & wondering why Superman was chasing the missile since he was flying west & the missile east then I saw this on tv. Best version. Still my favorite.

Plot twist: superman once used those clothes to clean his nose.
I really like Christopher Reeve as Superman chase missle rocket to space and when Lois Lane driving her red car and lois turning on the radio
Little did Superman know that when he sent that missile into Space he actually accidentally released three of the most dangerous criminals from Krypton.
no that was in superman 2 when he thwarted the plot of terrorists with a different bomb.

Flying doing wire work is not an easy task. Youll notice that in part 2, Non and Zod kinda fly awkward. Chris Reeve core stabilization is so strong he holds his legs back where in many flying scenes, look as if he has no legs....its an amazing feat

HISHE came up with the best response to the two missiles thing. Superman can change the direction of the Earth's rotation circling the globe so fast the reversed time. Two missiles should have been ZERO problem for him.
If Lex Luthor knew that Eve Teschmacher gave Superman a kiss when she saved his life on the condition that he saves her mother 1st before the Army missile hits Hackensack,New Jersey, where her mother lives,it would probably make Luthor decide to kill her with his bare hands.
All that fire from the rocket right in his face... and not even a tan!!
