- For those who want to try something different than the same old pen or pencil on white paper drawing, there's a way to exercise your brain, think in reverse, and have fun with all kinds of new ways to draw!

I agree about the Signo Uniball - very frustrating. But I do enjoy the Jelly Roll and have been playing with it for highlights.

Toothpaste for highlights. 🙇 Interesting. Glad to see artists are starting to review the lower cost alternatives that have been materializing on Amazon. One really sees very few artist reviews on brands like Arteza. Thanks for that. 🙆

I actually first used white on black medium in AP art in high school. It was vital in my education and was a great way to learn shading/lighting. Once you've done it in "reverse" it makes doing it in the standard manner easier as you can see the shading prior to getting to that step.

So weird about the Signo and Jellyroll experience you had. I've had the exact opposite!!
The Signo was the broad tip, while the Gelly Roll was the 08 medium tip. I expected the Signo to deliver more flow, consistently, but since I began using them, that's never been the case for me. Gelly Roll's, however, deliver a consistent, bright flow every time. It's not limited to just one pen, either, as I've bought many of both brands over the years. I did, however, stop buying Signo's about a year or so ago.

Mark this was great! ...I may give that reverse drawing ago-when I get a chance; I do have some XL black mixed media paper. I do believe CraftSmart paint pens do come in a larger size also. Always fun to watch and the toothpaste paint was funny... lol 😃Tfs
Great video Mark! 😁 Such a fun project. Have you tried the white inktense block? It look transparent when you mix some with water & as it dries it has more opacity. You might like it. I hope you are doing well my friend. 🤗
I’ve been waiting for this video to come out! Loved seeing your tests of the different media and of course how you put them together in the illustration (which I love). If you get a chance, try out a white Posca paint pen, I think you might like it on the black paper.

Sorry this is long. Just stumbled upon your channel (not sure how art would show up while looking for a food idea lol). I am glad I stumbled on it though. Back in the early 80's I took art in high school. I enjoyed it in grade school and junior high and was pretty good at it...or so I thought. I was in a whole different group of artists I had never come across once I was in high school. Anyway, my art was really bad when compared to theirs so....I gave up art until last year ( yes...over 36 years). Turns out....I am not that bad. I just had no one to encourage me back then so I believed what they said.....that I was bad. I now am pretty sure it was more my lack of confidence in myself. I now draw for me and only occasionally share. My twin even was shocked. She never knew I could draw and has actually bragged some....something she has NEVER done about me before. ANYWAY, thank you for posting....especially this one. I have black pastel paper. I KNOW there is a great drawing in me that will go on that paper....just testing things out but, with some tips you gave I feel I am closer to doing that now. THANK YOU! 😊 and thanks if you read this far....

I understand that lack of encouragement, as my own journey has been a very independent, "lone wolf" path of discovery. It also made me happy to hear your twin is so proud of your work as to boast about it. That's really fantastic. Pretty cool dude! Nice round up of opaque white pens. Rembrandt toothpaste, hmmm, interesting but you didn't tell us how well it whitens your teeth. 😁
lol! I imagine the Rembrandt toothpaste works best on really dark teeth! Fortunately, it is just enough for me to keep my pearlies looking dandy! lol! Thanks for checking this out, Steve.

Oh hey, I totally forgot that I have some of those white craft smart pens and sharpie pens from when I used to do what I called "Doodleware." Which is great, because I've been meaning to do a comparison of white pens video, but don't have the funds to go out and get new ones and thought I only have one or two... You just reminded me that I have significantly more. =>.

I got one of the crafts smart paint pens to do some lettering on a painting for my kid's room and it was really disappointing. It was super see through and pale. Might have to get a new one and see if it's changed.

I really enjoyed this video. Wasn't expecting the slightly more unconventional materials towards the end, lol! I tried the Gelly Roll pen a few years ago and only used it a few times before it totally dried out so I changed to my Posca paint pen after that. I have tried the Uniball Signo once since I bought it and it seemed a bit thick and hard to apply but I wasn't sure if it was just not working that well on top of my coloured pencils. I have seen other people use it and have it work very smoothly.

I've given up on the Signo pens, as I had the same experience as you with them over both watercolor and colored pencil. I prefer to just use gouache for sharp, white highlights. I haven't tried the Posca pens, so that will be something on my list to check out. I wish I had tried them before making this, as they'd have been cool to include. Thank you Mark, very interesting as usual. I have a tricky relationship with white gouache used with a dip pen ... it's wonderful stuff when the consistency is just right, but it's a matter of adding water one drop at a time.
Anyway, you know where this white on black thing inevitably leads, don't you? Wood engraving. :-)

Great vid! You inspired me to draw in my black sketchbook, which has been laying around for quite some time! BTW (idk if you are into this) But have you ever tried to use gold on black? like the finetec golden paint? they look stunning on black paper :)
Great Video :) It was really fun to watch and i have some black crafting paper lying around here as well... maybe I'll try some of the media you showcased - but to be honest, i'll skip the tooth paste :) Maybe you could try to paint with makeup - i tried it myself a few days ago with cheap stuff i bought in the dollar store and it was amazing (besides... it could work with this black sketchbook of yours as well) :)

M.D. Campbell, Art Detective. lol! Glad you enjoyed this and I'm thankful for your time and feedback, Libby! That brush was a very small Princeton angle spotter brush (5/0). I mostly use it for finer details when I need to see the tip of the brush without looking over my hand. It's a little harder to control, because of the normal distance of the hand from the brush is offset, but once you get used to it, there's no problem. :)
Hahaha, you had a lot of trouble with the Signo xD For me it's actually the opposite. I heard so much about the Gelly Roll that I was hugely disappointed when I bought it. It wasn't even that opaque! The only problem I have with the Signo broad is that it's... well... broad. The finer point version is not the same at all! The one thing I can tell about the Signo is that you have to use it very gently. If you press it too hard, the ink will stutter. I barely touch it to the surface of the paper. Maybe that will help? Also... when I use it on something dusty (like soft pastel... or too many layers of soft colored pencils), the tip will gather that dust and clog. I have to scribble a bit on a clean piece of paper to get it going again.
I'm just glad that we have enough of choices to get what we like best :D
Also white on craft paper is probably my favorite effect ever and this video inspired me to do something with it again. Thank you!!

Great video! Reminds me of the white on black drawings I did in school, but I haven’t done any since. Maybe time to change that, any recommendations on white ink for dip pens? Zig, Deleter and Daeler Rowney have been a bit disappointing.
Honestly, Steel Pheonyx, I didn't include white inks because I've found nothing that makes me happy using them. However, it is possible to use white gouache with a dip pen. Finding the right consistency is a little tricky, but not problematic. I'm glad you enjoyed this one and thank you so much for your time and feedback! Hope all is well! :)

Very interesting demonstration. What tool were you using to apply the gouache?
have you tried 'De Atramentis Document Ink - White' fountain pen ink yet, I love the way it looks on black card/paper, it is a bit expensive but oh so worth it, I have also tried a white dip pne ink on black card/paper but that just seems to fade quicker than the fountain pen ink
