They were the Everly Brothers on acid. Check out Dave McGowan, Laurel Canyon bands. My high school friend Bruce Bouton played with Emmie Lou Harris on the road. I know what why and wherefore, Dave McGowan 101 will put you there. Bruce went into career in Nashville, my brother got a college scholarship as a C- hs student, their friend Fred Gilbert journeyman with Segovia, that and more to say public school can work. And we survived LSD, peyote, mushrooms, woodrose, and DMT--"demilitarizing tea" as it was billed by our CIA handlers--definitely Dave McGowan 101.
And my cousin Bob Glass played 12-string with John Prine at Cellar Door, being from Norton, VA, Wise County, coal country with the coke ovens, Mister Peabody towed it all away. Another high school friend introduced me to Mark the manager of Toots Maytals in Brooklyn, again to say public school can work, and, Dave McGowan 101.
The lyrics are about L.A. The song was written after someone broke in to the house that the FBB were staying at and stole all their equipment. The guy on the 31st floor was some record label head who screwed Parsons over earlier. The last verse is about RFK (shot and killed in L.A.).
Found a vinyl of "Gilded" amongst a late uncle of mine's collection, but didn't have a good turntable, so I looked it up on here one night. Heard this song, and nearly cried at how beautiful it sounded.
I bought "The GIlded Palace of Sin" within the first week of its release. I was not expecting something so country - but it deeply effected me, as it continues to do almost 40 years later. At the time I got it many people thought I was strange for playing it over and over but it still sounds great today - pure and timeless. Back then I even listened to it on acid and its deeply soulful quality made that quite an experience, too. Hillman and Parsons had one of THE great vocal blends.
Yes, the vocal blend on A Devil in Disguise is great. How did you come to know about the Burrito Brothers? I only just discovered them, like 50 years late...
Chris Hillman learned a lot of harmonizing tricks from years of playing in a band with Crosby and Mcguinn. I'm not undermining his talent by any means, he has a lot of talent. He said before in an interview that he entered the Byrds as a disciple of Mcguinn, and left as McGuinn's equal.
I am a fan of Gram Parsons' Flying Burrito Brothers. No one other then this man could express whats in my heart. May the Lord bless and keep him til the end.
I'm new to these guys. Good song. Great harmonies. I'd have thought it was Don and Phil Everly from 1959, if I didn't know otherwise. I gather they were Everly fans. I'm a musician--small time. But, I understand the call of the road. And, trying to find 'something'. It can be a terrible temptress. Still, every time I see another victim lose their battle for life, I wish they could have held on. The roll call of such lost souls is long, and, not over. To you out there who decided to abandon that life, to have a family, and survived--you were the real winners. I'd be willing to live without ten of the worlds greatest songs, if ten more names could be added to those who survived. Sorry. This is a lonely-sounding song. When I read GP's story, it drew me in.
