Next to their double album "Untitled", Sweetheart is my favorite Byrds' album. It was so ahead of its' time. Roger McGuinn had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do it. It has Chris and Gram's indelible stamp on it. It wasn't originally a big commercial success but critics now agree it was one of the best rock albums ever. Music that stands up so well after 50 years is good music, it will probably be listened to 50 years, or more, into the future.
The song title and video is all super silly, but they never would have imagined that someone like me would be playing this in my room 50 years later and tearing up over it. It’s sad that Gram never lived long enough to see how much he influenced the future of music that came after and still continues today
Yup! Gram just seemed like one of those ppl you just feel like you've known forever. Rare thing. At the time of his death he was married and had a daughter. All of us in this time frame had been doing our own thing for many years. I compare kids to day and not all but kids are still at home, living with mom and dad, no job ect. Just a difference in the times I guess. When I look at Gram and take all this in, it makes me just respect the man he was not only in music but for trying to have a wife and family even though it didn't work out. Love Gram Parsons.❤
I was a teenager when a friend and I went to the Whiskey, I had no idea who the Flying Burrito Brothers were, I thought it was a joke. They came on in their Nudie suits and started playing and I was hooked for life. I remember hearing that Gram died when I was 20-sad, still sad.
For people who claim to ‘hate’ country music play them this song. And then afterwards play them George Jones singing Good Year for the Roses. If they still cling to their prejudice then kick them out of your life. You don’t need that level of ignorance and negativity in your life.

There is nobody who has been able to blend country and rock music like Gram Parsons still to this day. He was way ahead of his time. He has influenced countless other musicians and he pioneered his own type of music and he has still not been given the recognition he so deserved. Without Chris Hillman getting Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons together she would never have become the country music icon that she is. Emmylou Harris was a folk singer before she got together with Gram Parsons. She has always had the beautiful voice but her career was on a totally different path. If she had never gotten together with Gram Parsons she definitely would have become the country and Americana star. He definitely has changed country music for the better and he should be recognized for his contributions he literally changed the entire genre and he never had a hit record in his lifetime. So sad that he didn't get to see how much he changed the world of country music. Without Bernie Leadon getting into the Flying Burrito Brothers he would not have gone on to form the Eagles with Don Henley and Glenn Frey. There are so many people who have totally changed country rock music and they are all connected with Gram Parsons

Why Mr. Parsons isn't in both the Country Music and Rock and Roll halls of fame is truly beyond me because his influence is pretty much apparent in music from 1970 on, namely, The Eagles, to name one. Yes. Some of the old school Nashville people had contempt for rock musicians. See Ralph Emery. However, Gram Parson should definitely be in the rock hall in Cleveland. It's hard to believe that he isn't. They should do it while Keith Richards can present him for induction.
They were an extension of the Bakersfield Sound or Nashville West. Started by artists like Merle haggard, and Buck Owwns. It was the California country sound, where they just took country music from Nashville and mixed it with a rock and roll sound, using more electric guitar sound to it. Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman along with "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow where right at the forefront of this new sound, along with Emmylou Harris who played with the Burritos at times. The Burrito Brothers don't get the recognition they deserve. Its a shame Gram died so young, cause who knows what great music they still could of made.
I keep watching this video and just the creativity, that Zest for living life, I pick up smiles from Gram as he faces the group and he has a Euphoric grin on his face that says to me, Hot Burrito No,1 is good and you can see they know this one is GOLD. I love seeing Gram straight. He is sooo positive, sweet and good natured. He loved his friends that's for sure. I just see what Gram was doing was getting his music out there and heard. As Gram would say, I hate labels. ) I agree. If the music is good it will move your spirit, soul and want to make you get your groove on. But if it's bad, nobody pays attention. Since the age of 17, I have played this album more than any other. In good times and bad, its restorative powers remain undimmed, its beauty relentless. I return for the songs and their direct cardiac address. For the vocal harmonies, chapel and profane. For the hurt, crackled varnish of Gram Parson’s voice. For the swimmy pedal steel sluiced through a rotating Leslie amp. For the fuzz and the fog and the clarity. And for times lost and regained.
As I just returned to this album today I get exactly what you are saying. This album floored me in my teens and still resonates today. The singing of Gram and the sweet tone of Sneaky Pete still transport me to other worlds much better than this.

I dont think the subject matter is necessarily dark but I do see the cause and the EFFECT being what's so dark. Young love is so powerful and very frustrating and confusing. Being aware that you are compelled by love and not much you can do as far as how you feel and all the nuance and hints, clues, is enough to drive anyone crazy and into darkness. Sorry for ranting and being kind of vague, Love has became almost ineffable to me. This subject has been tripping people up for thousands of years so I dont see it stopping anytime soon. From personal experience there are times in life when falling in love is both a spiritual elevation and a madness. We feel complete d by the other and see our soul gazing back at us in their eyes. Take this inspiration to creative and spiritual work and try to keep on a steady path. Often there is a period of disillusionment afterwards, when we realize that the beloved is human and fallible. Then we can feel tricked. It's not their fault, often. It's soul growth and a touch with the divine source in ourselves projected onto the other! All the best!
When I listen to songs from The Gilded Palace of Sin on headphones, I realize how important Sneaky Pete is to this sound. Gram is singing, but Sneaky Pete is providing the musical accompaniment and has the solo. His "commentary" throughout the song is a wonderful and critical backdrop to the singing.

Been in love with Gram since I was a young teenager, September 19th, 1973 was a horrible day for this then young So Cal girl, the days of anticipation as they searched and found his remains, in Joshua Tree, were so sad. I loved his mugging Elvis lip, he will always be my boy, my old toy. ❤️💔🥰❤️
Having a major, major Gram Parsons binge at the moment. Just can’t get this song out of my head. Gram Parsons, a handsome, charismatic man and hugely talented individual. Dead at the age of 26, having destroyed himself with drink and drugs. I feel sad and angry in equal measure; a senseless waste, a terrible loss of potential. Just imagine the amazing music he would have created if he had lived, he would have gone on to collaborate with Elvis Costello no doubt about it.
I finally realized that Graham must have been a huge influence on Nick Lowe-same style, attitude, etc. Lowe was a bit more of a rocker but they could have easily been twin brothers...
I miss him so ....even to this day I met him 2/1968 I was 17 we stayed in touch until late 1970 ...such an awesome person ...fun times❣️ I never saw him do hard drugs! It was a sad day when I got a call Sept 1973 saying he was gone....to this day I don’t know who called me😢
I’m 23 years old and I’ve been listening to classic rock for about 15 years now. About 3 months ago I came across the Byrds and there began my journey into gram parsons. I really wish he would have lived longer because there isn’t another voice like his, nor is there music similar to his. His country with a hint of rock is the greatest thing this world has EVER heard 😇

If you ever get a chance, read one of his biographies. His life story is wild. Starts off really southern gothic and ends in excess and tragic infamy. I’m from NYC but when I first read his biography, totally by chance, I happened to be living in a town in Florida that neighbored the town where he was born. I had bought the book before moving to Florida and only happened to get to reading it while I was living there. Really put me in his shoes for the week or so I spent reading it. The smell of orange groves was literally coming through my window as I read about his family’s citrus fruit empire.
A very haunting song! I feel there must have been a curse on the family with so much bad luck. Gram Parsons was brilliant, was blessed and threw it all away.

T S they were poking fun at the Nashville “establishment” at a time when the Nudie suit was the standard. Gram’s had pot leaves on his so he really flipping his nose at Nashville where he was not taken seriously. His using rock influences in his music had all the SoCal artists chasing after him. The Eagles, Ronstadt, Nitty-Gritty, Loggins and Messina, and anyone else you want to name, not to mention discovering Emmylou Harris and giving her exposure to the entire LA music scene.
I must admit, I had never heard of this song/band until the other day when a LP station in the middle of nowhere played the Mavericks cover of it. It prompted me to look it up. I'm hooked.
The Burritos were special. They may not have been the most professional band on the scene at the time but they certainly had the x factor as to what makes a band great.This is simply a magnificent song and beautifully sung.
RH421939 No. The hall only inducted the original line up. They didn't induct the "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" line up and Clarence White wasn't inducted as a Byrd either. In fact, Parsons was on the ballot a few years ago as a solo.
2016 we drove from NC to Joshua Tree Ca. to see the magic that Gram found. We found it, what a place. I wish a bit of ashes be placed anywhere around Skull Rock. RIP Gram.

There is definitely some goofing around going on here. In addition to Gram Parsons' mugging to the camera, bassist/pianist, Chris Ethridge is on the drums while drummer, Michael Clarke is on the bass. Clarke is not even hiding the fact that he is completely faking it on the bass. It looks like they were having some fun since it was a synched TV performance and figured, "What does it matter as far as who plays what?" Also, maybe it's an out-take of a camera rehearsal. It would be interesting to know the story behind this video.
Reminds me of the time Nirvana appeared on British TV and Kurt decided to sing over the backing track like a lounge vocalist while Krist Novoselic threw his bass in the air and Dave Grohl kicked over a drum set. The tape is rolling, have some fun.

The only lead instrument in the group at this time. Of Course its important. Outside of the Hot Burritos, I find Grams vocals thin and underwhelming.

Been in love with Gram since I was a young teenager, September 19th, 1973 was a horrible day for this then young So Cal girl, the days of anticipation as they searched and found his remains, in Joshua Tree, were so sad. I loved his mugging Elvis lip, he will always be my boy, my old toy. ❤️💔🥰❤️
Having a major, major Gram Parsons binge at the moment. Just can’t get this song out of my head.
Gram Parsons, a handsome, charismatic man and hugely talented individual. Dead at the age of 26, having destroyed himself with drink and drugs. I feel sad and angry in equal measure; a senseless waste, a terrible loss of potential. Just imagine the amazing music he would have created if he had lived, he would have gone on to collaborate with Elvis Costello no doubt about it.
I'm binging on Gram and the Burrito Brothers too.

I finally realized that Graham must have been a huge influence on Nick Lowe-same style, attitude, etc. Lowe was a bit more of a rocker but they could have easily been twin brothers...

I miss him so ....even to this day I met him 2/1968 I was 17 we stayed in touch until late 1970 ...such an awesome person ...fun times❣️ I never saw him do hard drugs! It was a sad day when I got a call Sept 1973 saying he was gone....to this day I don’t know who called me😢

I’m 23 years old and I’ve been listening to classic rock for about 15 years now. About 3 months ago I came across the Byrds and there began my journey into gram parsons. I really wish he would have lived longer because there isn’t another voice like his, nor is there music similar to his. His country with a hint of rock is the greatest thing this world has EVER heard 😇

If you ever get a chance, read one of his biographies. His life story is wild. Starts off really southern gothic and ends in excess and tragic infamy. I’m from NYC but when I first read his biography, totally by chance, I happened to be living in a town in Florida that neighbored the town where he was born. I had bought the book before moving to Florida and only happened to get to reading it while I was living there. Really put me in his shoes for the week or so I spent reading it. The smell of orange groves was literally coming through my window as I read about his family’s citrus fruit empire.
A very haunting song! I feel there must have been a curse on the family with so much bad luck. Gram Parsons was brilliant, was blessed and threw it all away.
Gram Parsons makes it cool to be vulnerable here and sing with emotion.

I have been looking for a song like this forever and this past week really been wondering why never heard a similar in English but glad I finally found it

T S they were poking fun at the Nashville “establishment” at a time when the Nudie suit was the standard. Gram’s had pot leaves on his so he really flipping his nose at Nashville where he was not taken seriously. His using rock influences in his music had all the SoCal artists chasing after him. The Eagles, Ronstadt, Nitty-Gritty, Loggins and Messina, and anyone else you want to name, not to mention discovering Emmylou Harris and giving her exposure to the entire LA music scene.
What a shame he had to leave this world so soon. One of the best voices ever. 🙏❤️👌

The Burritos were special. They may not have been the most professional band on the scene at the time but they certainly had the x factor as to what makes a band great.This is simply a magnificent song and beautifully sung.

RH421939 No. The hall only inducted the original line up. They didn't induct the "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" line up and Clarence White wasn't inducted as a Byrd either. In fact, Parsons was on the ballot a few years ago as a solo.

2016 we drove from NC to Joshua Tree Ca. to see the magic that Gram found. We found it, what a place. I wish a bit of ashes be placed anywhere around Skull Rock. RIP Gram.

There is definitely some goofing around going on here. In addition to Gram Parsons' mugging to the camera, bassist/pianist, Chris Ethridge is on the drums while drummer, Michael Clarke is on the bass. Clarke is not even hiding the fact that he is completely faking it on the bass. It looks like they were having some fun since it was a synched TV performance and figured, "What does it matter as far as who plays what?" Also, maybe it's an out-take of a camera rehearsal. It would be interesting to know the story behind this video.
Reminds me of the time Nirvana appeared on British TV and Kurt decided to sing over the backing track like a lounge vocalist while Krist Novoselic threw his bass in the air and Dave Grohl kicked over a drum set. The tape is rolling, have some fun.

When I first heard this tune I could not get over the emotion and feeling. That was 1972 I think. After all this time it still has the grit and sorrow in it. Just think of the music Gram would have written.
