The best so far is 100% Kafka On The Shore by Haruki Murakami and the worst... maybeee The Monster Of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giesbrecht the fisrt book I read in 2020 and it was for sure not a good start of the year.

The worst book I read was actually a tale of two cities which is so sad bc it’s a classic! But I just didn’t get on with it. Best is Avatar The Search a graphic novel and second best is A Heart so Fierce and Broken. I have read quite a few 5 stars which is very exciting though!

I'm in a huge slump right now. I read less since the confinement than I did before.
So a couple weeks ago I decided to look into books I had already read for a nice, fluffy story I could just breeze through. I went with a re-telling Cinder&Ella, then found the sequel and read that.
Now I'm re-reading the Hunger Games, and then re-reading Harry Potter.
2020 is the year of the re-reads for me. I just need that, like comfort food and an nice hug all in one package ^^

Hi, I love your videos, and got many recommendations from you. Love that you always have some interesting books and unique ones not really talked about. My best book so far Children of Time, thanks to you. I just wanted to say I don't really have a worst book, because I just DNF I DNF all the time. Can't force myself to read stuff I don't enjoy. The house in the cerulean sea is the sweetest and kindest book i've read so far this year. it really helped with my stressed shaky ass, i'm so grateful. it's all cotton candy fluff with sprinkles of hard hitting topics that pierce you at random times. the romance is slow and mature and mostly in the background, but it added so much more to the story. i really loved this book.

Thanks to the pandemic, I've fallen a bit behind on my reading challenge (only 2 books by GR standards). I just cannot focus on reading when under stress, but thank goodness for graphic novels to help me get SOME reading done! Hopefully, I'll be breaking out of the slump soon since I've been wanting to reread a book I've enjoyed in the past (either Circe or Fangirl). Haven't really had many disappointing reads this year, and I think the lowest I've rated any has been 3 stars out of 5.

So glad you liked the three body problem too! But yea Xin Liu is not best know for writing and developing characters, I would say that is one of the weaker elements in the book, they can lack dimension sometimes, but his world building, fascinating concepts, scifi knowledge and batshit crazy imagination are what made the series so good. Also he did come up with the dark forest theory himself, crazy man

I'm challenging myself to read every book on my shelves that's unread, or that I read so long ago that I don't remember much. Best book so far this year was Too Far To Go by John Updike (it's actually a collection of short stories but all about the same couple). And worst was Gun Show Nation, a book someone gave me. If it had a point, I didn't get it and since I am a glutton for punishment I read the whole book even though it was clear it wasn't going to get any better. I love your reviews and your comments about The Need were hilarious.

A suggestion if you've liked Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children series, but didn't really like Middlegame (which I haven't even read yet) would be her science fiction works under the pen name Mira Grant. She has a series from many years ago called News Flesh which is political zombie horror, the Parasitology trilogy (the main critique of this one that I've heard is it's very much a retelling of News Flesh but I can't speak to that as I've only read Parasite and Symbiont), and Into the Drowning Deep (high scifi killer mermaids).
Full disclosure, I don't think you'll really like the Parasitology trilogy, but that you'd still get a kick out of the science and world building there. Your call of course. I do absolutely think you'd enjoy Into the Drowning Deep, as McGuire's writing had evolved considerably from her earlier works.
Aaaand as a last final suggestion from a really big McGuire fan, you might want to try In the Shadow of Spindrift House which is a short story in the Eldritch Horror genre. If you're not familiar with Eldritch horror, skip it because it does rely on some familiarity with the genre and specific tropes/terminology.

I am most of the way through it and although there are a couple of stories that I love, and her writing is sublime as always, I am just feeling unsatisfied in general. I've read 65 books so far this year and I don't really have a page goal, just a few books and series I want to make sure I read this year. My biggest disappointments this year has been Go Set a Watchman "by" Harper Lee. Would not recommend whatsoever if you liked To Kill a Mockingbird I would just leave it at that and be so happy with how you feel at that point and Life of Pi, which I have waited years to watch the movie until I read the book and I thought I was going to absolutely love it and since finishing the book... I still haven't watched the movie now that I really didn't enjoy the "twist" and what my take on what that was supposed to mean... sigh... My 5 star books (that weren't rereads) this year have been Gone Girl (also love the movie), Warbreaker, the play All My Sons, Franny and Zooey, Catcher in the Rye, The Humans, Elevation, The Grean Mile, Children of Time (thank you for the recommendation), Slaughterhouse-five, and The Subtle Knife (just read His Dark Materials for the first time this year and #2 was definitely my favorite... disappointed to hear about the new books... but I will probably still read them anyway too... we can be in that struggle boat together... LOL). Currently reading the Lord of the Rings for the first time and I have high high hopes and I'm halfway through book 10 of Wheel of time and on average rate those books 4 stars and have really enjoyed reading them :)

So disappointing about Phillip Pullman! I love his Dark Materials trilogy and was looking forward to the spinoff series. I probably will still read them but setting my expectations a little lower.

@@BookswithEmilyFox I think my biggest problem with "The City we Became" is that I hyped it up too much. I don't really like urban fantasy and/or magical realism and this book felt too much like 'real world' fantasy (as I call it) than her other books. Also the book assumes you have prior knowledge of NYC, so make sure you have a map handy or know someone who lives/lived in NYC to answer questions. I read a review describing it as a 'love story to NYC' (not my words, I can't remember where I read that) and I thought that described the book perfectly. I did listen to most of the book as an audio book and I thought the audio book was done very well. I hope you enjoy it, and I cannot wait to hear your review when you do get to it. :)

Emily you should try to read Tears in Rain by Rosa Montero, it's a really interesting sci-fi about a detective called Bruna who is a tecno human (bio-engineered human), it takes place in 2100s, so cool, so interesting and so easy to read. Bruna is one of my favorite female characters of all time

I have finished the three body trilogy and was blown away by everything. While I do agree on the somewhat misogynistic interpretion of Luo Ji's dream girl or whateves, but I think that was more the misogyny of the character personally and not the writer's, like he wanted to portray what sort typically males want despite being genius and not being able to go outside stereotypes. After all, he gave us Ye Wenjie. That woman was the real mastermind behind everything.
I have rarely come across books that are these terrifically beautiful and dark, not diluted. I am gonna check out everything by Cixin.
